I have asperger's and am a pianist. I can relate to his becoming emotional at the end. He actually did very well on this performance upon watching it again today.
His vocals weren't completely perfect here, but his connection with the song was amazing to watch. And if you doubt him vocally here, just go listen to the studio version, EASILY the best version of this song I have ever heard.
James really connected with this song, as he does with most of his music when he performs. He was missing his financee & 2yr old son and hence the tears. IMHO I feel James connection with his music makes him a phenomenal singer, artist, entertainer and man. He is the "real deal" not plastic at all. Wonderful to see a man who is not afraid to show his feelings for his family. He & they are truly blessed. His heart, soul & spirit is what makes him an amazing rocker, too!!!
Haley is good too. However I still could not figure out, what kind of artist she is??? She is in blues or jazz or Lady Gaga or what??? I do not think even she knows her identity. It is nice to hear her in the car driving in the crazy traffic. or while sleeping, or in a jazz bar or in Vegas. However, I really do not want to spend the money for her album, or her concert. It takes a hell of a lot to fight back tears and emotions that powerful, and way more strength than any of these trolls can imagine to use those emotions, on stage, for your performance. If you couldn't feel this guy's passion behind his singing without seeing him cry, you shouldn't be voting on this show, because you have no idea what makes a true musician.

When you give as much heart and emotion as James did on this song then you can't beat that any day!! It takes a hell of a lot to fight back tears and emotions that powerful, and way more strength than any of these trolls can imagine to use those emotions, on stage, for your performance. If you couldn't feel this guy's passion behind his singing without seeing him cry, you shouldn't be voting on this show, because you have no idea what makes a true musician.

Be honest, the only thing he can do is screaming.... so sad and painful. I wont buy his record. This performance is nothing good. He didnt even try to sing it his own way but only copy Mariah. Oh, I forgot everyone is Mariah's vocalchild.

I love James and not because of his back story but his ability to sing a song and relate to it and share that with us his fans. I could say more but not going to this song speaks volumes to what James can do and quite frankly its what I look for in an artist it is what sets a singer apart from just being a good singer.

oo much true passion though, that it affected his voice in a bad way. the judges should have said this. actually, they did, but too euphemistic about. it's not gonna be something offensive anyway, and just tell what the singer has to work on,or else, he would tend to make the same mistake and maybe, some of his fans would start to doubt his potential. i'm saying this because...haha....i'm one of those that disliked this.

come on, stop the excuses that at least he conveyed such immense emotion and made the performance still great. a lot of singers can be emotional and great at the same time.i'm not a hater, but at least people should advise him what he must work out with, which actually lacks for this season. it was a bit refreshing what jimmy had said in the elimination night.

@mau345 it was painful to listen to. it amazes me how jacob got so much flak from the judges for "letting the emotion control him" when james was praised to the hilt for an "emotionally perfect" performance. if it sounds bad, it sounds bad. this after all is a singing competition. it's not "drama idol."

@neinsager exactly. i mean, its a big plus if you're able to convey the emotion of the song, but if it comes to a point where it negatively affects the main importance, which is the skill of singing, then all your effort might go downhill. he's good, but i think he has to hold his emotions now, and he must limit his acts of showing his personal side like his family and illness, or whatever. because one day, after this contest, all the people would mostly care about his material and not his bio.

I'm critically rating this performance.. I'd give it a 9/10.. the other 1/10.... is because Haley's second f=performance took it.. Just my opinion..

No James is not relying on anything he is a very real human being who sang a song that hit him hard and yet he was able to sing this song and deliver a perfect emotional moment that the song is about while vocally it was not the best James can do he maintain his emotions enough to finish it and deliver another astounding performance kudos to you James you are a true artist.

This is when music goes from just music to something truly special. Who cares if it was not sang perfect. When you give as much heart and emotion as James did on this song then you can't beat that any day!! I appreciate this much more over someone who can sing really great but with no emotion or feeling!! Emotion takes music to a new level and is what separates a good artist from a GREAT one!!
