Great minds think alike, i heard Ricky Gervais, Jim Gaffigan, And Louis CK all do the same joke about buckets of chicken, theyre all still fuckin awesome comics though
this is just parallel thinking. there's a difference between stealing and parallel thinking. stealing is when someone obviously takes a joke's structure and its material (ex: mencia taking cosby's football joke), parallel thinking is just an accident which comes from semi-obvious conclusions (immigration jokes about fences, religion jokes about priests, etc) that is bound to happen in this 6-billion+ human population
Probably linear thinking in this case. Jim's an "everyday" type of comic who will talk about everyday stuff, and having worn glasses for years, it's something people with glasses often complain about.
I love "stealing jokes" videos, but what if one comedian pays another or gets permission? Jay Leno said he would go to clubs and if a comedian had an original joke, Jay would simply give him a hundred bucks for the joke. The comedian gets a hundred and bragging rights that he wrote a joke for Leno, hmmm. Jim is one of the best. Maybe comedians have a pool of people that write their stuff? Gaffigan doesn't seem like a stealer.
Seriously though!! If they want to joke about that topic there are only so many things you CAN say, lol!! I wear glasses and talk about that SAME topic to half a dozen people ... it never really gets old!! I don't think it's stealing material, considering you can't steal a topic nobody has personal claim over!!
its only one joke and he borrowed a concept; he didnt steal the joke outright. besides, Gaffigan is still unique to the core. the whole highpitched woman voice he randomly interjects to criticize his own shtick... pure genius.
I gotta say, I;m not even a comedian, but I just recently started thinking of material for open mics the past couple months, and I;ve already thought of a bit, then later heard a comic say something similar.
Usually, if you;re gonna accuse someone, it should be a very specific, non-common joke (I could easily see 2 guys thinking of this) They should have multiple cases where it's happened, and you should know that they saw that person do that material.Similar thinking happens.
If you really try, you would find tons of similarities just like this with most comedians. I'm a comedian, and had this happen. It's almost always due to similar experiences in life.. Sometimes they do just take a joke and put a personal twist on it.. if you like jim, why would you put that on here saying he steals???
Fuck all this stealing bull shit, sometimes a comedian happens to arrive at the same obvious joke. It's like two guys coming up with the same invention idea, but they take a different approach to it. If the comedian is doing lots of materials of someone else, like Mencia than its stealing. Most of the time its just parallel thinking, we are journalists that often cover the same topics.
@IllicitTU and I would take this seriously if comedians actually cared enough to copyright their jokes, but they don't. most comedians start doing comedy because they like to make people laugh. the entire point is to make as many people laugh as you can. so if you manage to somehow come up with an original joke that has truly never been told before, then a true comedian would be happy that other comedians found their joke funny enough to use in their own personal acts...
@canilive0102 Not a compelling example, unfortunately. The first appearance of Louis CK's Cinnabon joke was in his special on 08 but Gaffigan did the joke in a special in 05. Not saying that CK stole the joke as it is a common observation by those who travel by plane a lot or run into Cinnabon on a common basis - even I have made the observation on just how out of control the portion sizes are in that restaurant. If I, a non-comic, could make the observation then I expect many comics to.
I have to admit the jokes are almost identical, but Jim Gaffigan's delivery is 100 times funnier...it's like if I had a band and I took an NSYNC song (just trying to think of a terrible band from the last 15 years) and covered it and got really popular by playing their song but better...comedians are inspired sometimes by other comedians and they think "hey, maybe i can do that joke better.." and then they do...it's not some kind of sin or something
People who accuse comedians of joke-stealing always make me laugh. I mean really, that's the best use of your time, determining if a joke was stolen? Why not just laugh at the joke and move on? Either it's funny or it's stupid. And why is it that whenever someone says "Person A stole from Person B" they turn out to be complete Person B fanboys?
Yes, that's exactly how it works. Have you never taken an economics class? Technology is where it is because people took something, tweaked it into something better, and repackaged it, and so forth. I know your comment was deleted, but use your head bro.
@balkthor@balkthor oh, so if you become rich and famous off of say an invention or something of the such and I take it, tweak it just a little to make it better/different and then I become rich and famous off of it and claim it as mine you won't mind? ok, that works for me!
I'm quite positive it's a coincidence. How many comedians talk about airline food? I'm sure jokes get repeated through the natural order of things just as much as by theft. For this particular joke topic, I find it to be especially believable that they each came up with it on their own.
Aside from all that, as you know Gaffigan is hilarious enough on his own. Why write hours of original hilarity and then steal one joke that isn't even as good as much of his other stuff?
Its way too similar to be coincidence if it would've ended before the guy talked about the wheelchair you could've called it that but when two ofthem are even worded exactly the same its stealing. I never liked jim in the first place. He's about as good as dane cook.
He's a decent comedian, and he normally writes his own material, but this isn't the only situation where he stole material. He stole a lot of his waffle house jokes from Bill Hicks, but at least Gaffigan isn't as bad as Carlos Mencia, or Denis Leary.
It's a premise that glasses wearing comedians all make myself included. The two jokes are veeery different in content, with the same attitude and different approaches to display it.
Larry who? Is every comedian supposed to every other comedian's jokes from the past 10 years? Did you ever think maybe Larry is now a joke writter for Jim?
I dont think it was stolen material. I think its more so the fact that they both chose the obvious way to make this joke funny. They wont use the example " hey I got a microwave wanna borrow that too " they use more relate able funny issues like hairpieces, glasses, underwear etc.
Jim G could be a fan of Larry R and then changed the joke around somewhat cause he wears glasses too, so he figured the joke could work in his act as well
These jokes aren't THAT similar to call it theft, and anyone could come up with this as a joke. I'm sure thousands of people have complained about this sort of thing, they just aren't on stage speaking. The jokes really aren't that similar, if you were to write an outline of each performance you might put the description of each of these bits, but they're quite different in delivery and content. The only similarity is the topic and the emotion shown.
I don't know how you can show us evidence he steals jokes (it's too close to be a coincidence people it's the same exact joke) and then claim he's still great. Why is stealing ok? I'm a writer and if I take one chapter from another writer I'm in deep shit. If I took one paragraph I'm in deep shit. I think Joe Rogan put this best, "If you care about comedy you don't tolerate intellectual thieves. If you don't care then you're the type of person who doesn't care about anything beyond yourself."
in all fairness to Jim and most comedians, there are different levels of jokes. there are those that are a little more out there and take serious thought and there are jokes that are a little more obvious. let's be honest, anyone could have come up with this glasses bit. so I think it's safe to say this was a coincidence, not thievery.
i think a joke well said is always funny, that's the talent of a comedian, doesn't matter who came up with it. Jim is really one of the funniest in the industry
Just a little thought experiment, say there are only 1000 comedians ever in the world and each comedian tells 100 jokes over his or her lifetime, that would leave 100000 jokes in total, and people don't think that these jokes will ever cross each other, it's just probability.
Just a similar observation made by 2 guys who wear glasses. Part of why jokes are funny is because tons of people relate to them.
Also check out Jim's "Nutrition facts of water" Joke. Lewis Black did almost the same thing, except funnier. I wouldn't say Jim stole that joke, he just made an observation that tons of people make--it's fucking stupid to have nutrition facts on water--it's a plain, boring beverage.
@natasprotector WHY WOULD IT MATTER?! if i painted a gorgeous painting and someone liked it years later, took a picture of it and sold it to hallmark for a thousand dollars, big deal. If I sold televisions and another salesman got the commission for my sale, big deal. fucking obvious.
@killthephonies and if you were a doctor studying medicine to cure cancer and you suddenly became insane or old with alzheimers then another doctor finishes your work and cures cancer gets all the credit, you wouldnt know the difference, bottom line here bro comedians use the same material, jim gaffigan is not a carlos mencia,
@natasprotector cute that you used the word moot, wonder if you even know what it means. either way your example is completely irrelevant. this isn't an example of a comedian starting a joke and another one finishing it and getting all the credit. the joke WAS finished and performed and then used again. using your example it would be like the doctor found the cure for cancer and then people forgot about it ten years later so another doctor used the same cure and took the credit.
@natasprotector and why would you even bring up carlos mencia if you think stealing jokes is no big deal? since obviously everyone uses the same material all of a sudden. and if Jim Gaffigan steals or borrows jokes, which he obviously does, he absolutely is a carlos mencia.
@killthephonies just jealous.... what are you a comic who hasnt made it yet so you cry all day about what other famous people are doing, gaffigan is in movies and will be a bigger name than you ever will be. so long nobody
Yeah, it's hard to gauge something like that without an audience. Even professional comedians don't really know what's funny until the audience laughs. I'll find out at about 8 tonight whether I'm funny or not.
@budzin303 I never saw that one. It never really was Jim's best gag anyway. I've written acts and later seen acts that were very similar to mine, which is annoying, but it's a total loss for me.
in theory, all jokes possible have pretty much been done, granted they get some generational flavor, but comedians make jokes from their lives, and comedians have similiar lives due to being comedians, so it is only natural that jokes will over lap. if the internet didn't exist, and you had to physically go see the comedian, you wouldn't hear the same thing too often.
any situational comedy is repeated. great minds and all. it's hard because you have to google search your material to make sure no one thought of a similar joke.
While yes the two jokes are similar and I've actually heard a jim gaffigan version of the joke that says the exact same thing as the other comedian, I don't really think its him attempting to steal the joke, I think its just a very common place subject that's easy to make a joke about
i think jim is hella funny but it does seem obviuos that he used that for his joke but it doesnt really seem like stealing to me.. it seems like he is kinda bringing back something that no one would really ever hear because it was in 89
If someone makes a joke, it's likely that somebody else already made the same joke first. There's only so much fresh material, and I can't expect Jim to actually do all that work to compare his material against every other comic that ever existed. I bet he'd rather eat some bacon then make some jokes about it.
I don't think he stole it, I agree with most of the people here. It's just funny stuff that is easily relatable (which comics know makes good material). I mean if you think about how long that type of material has been being produced for you have to admit the odds fall just by change that that could happen for any given joke/topic.
Ya, I have to say, although they are very similar, do you think EVERY comedian has 100% original content? Someone has to have said something similar before, do you really think that you have had a single original idea in life? Really think about it, even abstract thoughts inside your head, have probably been thought about by someone else at a different time. No offence, like you said, you're just noting a similarity, nice video. But it's something cool and philosophical to think about.
there are hundreds of jokes like this. The pun of "stroke" (a brain stroke and then the stroke! yelled out when rowing a boat) has been used by multiple stand ups, The simpsons, and Family guy, and thats all 1 joke used over and over by at least 3 different sources I have seen.
Similar yes, stealing no. I'm an aspiring comedian and have myself written a glasses joke. Its a common thing to draw comedy from. There was enough personal variation to negate it being stolen material. Still both very fun :)
Uhh, definitely some overlap. Not appauling, I've heard much worse, and if it was conscious, Jim still ellaborated on it quite a bit. A lot of standup is done extemporaneously, and open to whatever pops into the mind, and could have worked its way back up through the subconscious easily, even in preparation. If it went to a lawsuit, the judge would have to rule some infringement, but I doubt there would be stiff or punitive damages, probably some minor royalty-sharing.
Meh, i don't think he stole this. I think it's just a case of parallel thinking. Yeah, the joke structures are similar but it's a pretty broad subject and it's a coincidence. Usually comics are really vocal about people who steal jokes and I haven't really heard any comic complain about Jim stealing their stuff, cuz if he did he wouldn't have gotten away with it this long. So, this is a coincidence IMO
yes the fuck you are asshole! You are trying to turn people against him just by posting the damn video, nobody needs a public service announcement about a comedian stealing material, besides, it's very common, I had glasses for 4 years before getting contacts people would bug me about it all the time
Good to bring up. I really love Jim Gaffigan. I really do not think that this is something he stole. Very common yes but no sufficient proof to assume he did. This joke was also mentioned on Curb Your Enthusiasm. It's very common. Or am I just saying this because I love both Jim and Larry and I do not want to believe this?
Through personal experience, I've come to realize stuff like this happens a lot. I've come up with all kinds of my own jokes and styles and found the same kind of stuff from collegehumour to old comedians.
Everything has been done already, it's near impossible to create new, unique stuff. Though the comparison makes it pretty believable the joke could have been stolen to the common person, I don't think it was. Again, that's only because I've experienced coincidential simlarities myself.
This is ridiculous. The glasses observation really does happen to almost everyone with glasses so it's not surprising that in eleven YEARS two comics happened to make a joke about it.
He could have heard this act a long time ago, then been thinking about glasses one day and these jokes surfaced in his mind and he thought they were his own ideas.
it's parallel thinking, jim's material is really unique same with dane cook you can tell as joe rogan said that they do not steal jokes because they have a distinct style that is different from others.
Even if he did "steal" it or "copied" it, it was one joke and we all know that Jim Gaffigan can DELIVER! He is one of the best comics out there and I would lose no respect for him if he did.
I watched Louis CK's Chewed up special last night on netflix. It was recorded in '08 and Jims Beyond the Pale was taped in '05. Louis steals, I mean almost word for word, Jims cinnabon joke. Louis mentions the airport, shame, size of the cinnabon, etc.
@mcrecycleguy Well, they're both 40 year old, out of shape, balding, married comedians who travel a lot by plane. They probably share a lot of similar experiences.
Honestly, it could be a coincidence. Lewis Black once used a joke that was pretty much identical to something I had written in a blog. I suppose it's possible the Lewis read my blog and stole my joke but I kind of doubt it.
Comedians are famous for appropriating materails. And, they are notorious for squawking about it when its their material lifted. Jim Gaffigan has a lot of original material, and funny delivery. Have you ever found yourself.. kinda doing a comedian's material or copping their style in some way? In the end its their style that you like.
PS - Richard Pryor my favorite comedian. And Dave Chappelle has LOADS of Pryor' material in his hilarious standup KILLIN' 'EM SOFTLY. I like Dave, too!

I've also noticed Jim Gaffigan using material that Jon Stewart used in his stand up routine. One of Jim's jokes is about how Easter got to be associated with eggs and how some religions ban pork and they both use it in very similar ways. Probably a plagiarist.
Just cause two people have the same thought, does not make it plagiarism. I've had the same thought before I had heard or watched the two. Being a comedian means you have to know how and what majority people think and say.
@JonesyA08 That's very true, but the way the two jokes in this video and the two that I'm talking about are very similar in the way they're structured and the way he builds up to them, but the words are changed ever so slightly. Obviously I'm not saying Gaffigan is a plagiarist because I find him hilarious - for all I know he could have seen these jokes before but forgotten about them and put them in his own routine.
You make him sound like he's a drunk plagiarist, hahah. While possible, I doubt that's how it went down. If you watch enough movies, I'm sure you're bound to hear some same dialog or line used. Same way with the comedy business. I've seen enough comedy stand up to hear some of their jokes used by others. Given it's not the same thing verbatim. But close enough to make me say "I think I've heard that before." But I think it's pure coincidence.
Garry Shandling also does a bit about this that's similar from the early 80's. A lot of comics have "parallel ideas" and similar bits. Almost every topic has been covered at this point, so there's just different ways of presenting it
Same content and I remember watching Uncle Lar who never made it anywhere but Dangerfield's. Jim Gaffigan is hysterical so i would have to say simply that he may have heard it back then and it sat around in his head for 11 years and finally came to him as an original thought.

Jim Gaffigan is totally unique and I listen to a load of stand up but indeed he may have taken this bit but tbh a lot of comedians use that "can I try your glasses" bit, it's the blatant rip off comedians like Dane Cook doing what I call his Louis CK appreciation act and Carlos Mencia who everyone should know is a rip off merchant by now that rub me the wrong way.
I love Jim Gaffigan! He is the best comedian of all time. Even though their acts were both pretty similiar I still think Gaffigan definately put his own twist on his stand up performance, so it's still pretty awesome.=D

Larry who? Is every comedian supposed to every other comedian's jokes from the past 10 years? Did you ever think maybe Larry is now a joke writter for Jim?

Uncle Larry woohoo
BobN666 10 months ago
I don't think Jim Gaffigan steals material. He just talks about really general every day life stuff.
RedSandStudios 10 months ago
I dont think it was stolen material. I think its more so the fact that they both chose the obvious way to make this joke funny. They wont use the example " hey I got a microwave wanna borrow that too " they use more relate able funny issues like hairpieces, glasses, underwear etc.
Ctanz12 10 months ago
i would think maybe a coincidence, too; or that he might be a fan of the larry guy. either way, jim's is way funnier. :)
kickerofbuckets 10 months ago
Jim G could be a fan of Larry R and then changed the joke around somewhat cause he wears glasses too, so he figured the joke could work in his act as well
JNdigital 10 months ago
i dunno, gaffigan's funny enough for me to assume coincidence. plus, maybe the joke is just that universal to people wearing glasses.
SpaceBanaynay 10 months ago 2
These jokes aren't THAT similar to call it theft, and anyone could come up with this as a joke. I'm sure thousands of people have complained about this sort of thing, they just aren't on stage speaking. The jokes really aren't that similar, if you were to write an outline of each performance you might put the description of each of these bits, but they're quite different in delivery and content. The only similarity is the topic and the emotion shown.
vileguy 10 months ago 2
I don't know how you can show us evidence he steals jokes (it's too close to be a coincidence people it's the same exact joke) and then claim he's still great. Why is stealing ok? I'm a writer and if I take one chapter from another writer I'm in deep shit. If I took one paragraph I'm in deep shit. I think Joe Rogan put this best, "If you care about comedy you don't tolerate intellectual thieves. If you don't care then you're the type of person who doesn't care about anything beyond yourself."
abrondarbit 10 months ago
in all fairness to Jim and most comedians, there are different levels of jokes. there are those that are a little more out there and take serious thought and there are jokes that are a little more obvious. let's be honest, anyone could have come up with this glasses bit. so I think it's safe to say this was a coincidence, not thievery.
pillarsofserpents 11 months ago
i think a joke well said is always funny, that's the talent of a comedian, doesn't matter who came up with it. Jim is really one of the funniest in the industry
dimatud 11 months ago 2

Just a little thought experiment, say there are only 1000 comedians ever in the world and each comedian tells 100 jokes over his or her lifetime, that would leave 100000 jokes in total, and people don't think that these jokes will ever cross each other, it's just probability.
Disneyworld99 1 year ago
Just a similar observation made by 2 guys who wear glasses. Part of why jokes are funny is because tons of people relate to them.
Also check out Jim's "Nutrition facts of water" Joke. Lewis Black did almost the same thing, except funnier. I wouldn't say Jim stole that joke, he just made an observation that tons of people make--it's fucking stupid to have nutrition facts on water--it's a plain, boring beverage.

comedians use each others material all the time, not a big deal

@natasprotector yes, not a big deal. i do work everyday so that someone else can make money from it ten years later. are you really that stupid?
killthephonies 1 year ago
@killthephonies i guess that would depend on your job? dickhead
natasprotector 1 year ago
@natasprotector WHY WOULD IT MATTER?! if i painted a gorgeous painting and someone liked it years later, took a picture of it and sold it to hallmark for a thousand dollars, big deal. If I sold televisions and another salesman got the commission for my sale, big deal. fucking obvious.
killthephonies 1 year ago
@killthephonies your points are moot.
natasprotector 1 year ago
@killthephonies and if you were a doctor studying medicine to cure cancer and you suddenly became insane or old with alzheimers then another doctor finishes your work and cures cancer gets all the credit, you wouldnt know the difference, bottom line here bro comedians use the same material, jim gaffigan is not a carlos mencia,
natasprotector 1 year ago
@natasprotector cute that you used the word moot, wonder if you even know what it means. either way your example is completely irrelevant. this isn't an example of a comedian starting a joke and another one finishing it and getting all the credit. the joke WAS finished and performed and then used again. using your example it would be like the doctor found the cure for cancer and then people forgot about it ten years later so another doctor used the same cure and took the credit.
killthephonies 1 year ago
@killthephonies cute that you used the word cute
natasprotector 1 year ago
@natasprotector and why would you even bring up carlos mencia if you think stealing jokes is no big deal? since obviously everyone uses the same material all of a sudden. and if Jim Gaffigan steals or borrows jokes, which he obviously does, he absolutely is a carlos mencia.

Yeah, it's hard to gauge something like that without an audience. Even professional comedians don't really know what's funny until the audience laughs. I'll find out at about 8 tonight whether I'm funny or not.

in theory, all jokes possible have pretty much been done, granted they get some generational flavor, but comedians make jokes from their lives, and comedians have similiar lives due to being comedians, so it is only natural that jokes will over lap. if the internet didn't exist, and you had to physically go see the comedian, you wouldn't hear the same thing too often.
themadtapper 1 year ago
It's a possibility that Gaffigan bought from Reeb. Comedians buy jokes from each other all the time.

any situational comedy is repeated. great minds and all. it's hard because you have to google search your material to make sure no one thought of a similar joke.
SamKrafty 1 year ago
While yes the two jokes are similar and I've actually heard a jim gaffigan version of the joke that says the exact same thing as the other comedian, I don't really think its him attempting to steal the joke, I think its just a very common place subject that's easy to make a joke about
theruleofKISS 1 year ago
i think jim is hella funny but it does seem obviuos that he used that for his joke but it doesnt really seem like stealing to me.. it seems like he is kinda bringing back something that no one would really ever hear because it was in 89
richy0o 1 year ago
If someone makes a joke, it's likely that somebody else already made the same joke first. There's only so much fresh material, and I can't expect Jim to actually do all that work to compare his material against every other comic that ever existed. I bet he'd rather eat some bacon then make some jokes about it.
Anonymous5214 1 year ago
I don't think he stole it, I agree with most of the people here. It's just funny stuff that is easily relatable (which comics know makes good material). I mean if you think about how long that type of material has been being produced for you have to admit the odds fall just by change that that could happen for any given joke/topic.
soocl0se 1 year ago
same topics, different explainations
Miike92 1 year ago

Still both very fun :)
funnyDJ25 1 year ago
Uhh, definitely some overlap. Not appauling, I've heard much worse, and if it was conscious, Jim still ellaborated on it quite a bit. A lot of standup is done extemporaneously, and open to whatever pops into the mind, and could have worked its way back up through the subconscious easily, even in preparation. If it went to a lawsuit, the judge would have to rule some infringement, but I doubt there would be stiff or punitive damages, probably some minor royalty-sharing.

um yeah....this is just something that's true that all glasses wearing folk know. I doubt he stole it...

famousgirl9x9 1 year ago
Meh, i don't think he stole this. I think it's just a case of parallel thinking. Yeah, the joke structures are similar but it's a pretty broad subject and it's a coincidence. Usually comics are really vocal about people who steal jokes and I haven't really heard any comic complain about Jim stealing their stuff, cuz if he did he wouldn't have gotten away with it this long. So, this is a coincidence IMO

yes the fuck you are asshole! You are trying to turn people against him just by posting the damn video, nobody needs a public service announcement about a comedian stealing material, besides, it's very common, I had glasses for 4 years before getting contacts people would bug me about it all the time
LeftiesWillRule 1 year ago
Good to bring up. I really love Jim Gaffigan. I really do not think that this is something he stole. Very common yes but no sufficient proof to assume he did. This joke was also mentioned on Curb Your Enthusiasm. It's very common. Or am I just saying this because I love both Jim and Larry and I do not want to believe this?
docdog333 1 year ago
Through personal experience, I've come to realize stuff like this happens a lot. I've come up with all kinds of my own jokes and styles and found the same kind of stuff from collegehumour to old comedians.
Everything has been done already, it's near impossible to create new, unique stuff. Though the comparison makes it pretty believable the joke could have been stolen to the common person, I don't think it was. Again, that's only because I've experienced coincidential simlarities myself.
gnredbull 1 year ago
This is ridiculous. The glasses observation really does happen to almost everyone with glasses so it's not surprising that in eleven YEARS two comics happened to make a joke about it.
zdrastvoite1 1 year ago

dryhumper2 1 year ago

it's parallel thinking, jim's material is really unique same with dane cook you can tell as joe rogan said that they do not steal jokes because they have a distinct style that is different from others.

AdamYoxall93 1 year ago
@AdamYoxall93
Just cause two people have the same thought, does not make it plagiarism. I've had the same thought before I had heard or watched the two. Being a comedian means you have to know how and what majority people think and say.
JonesyA08 1 year ago
@JonesyA08 That's very true, but the way the two jokes in this video and the two that I'm talking about are very similar in the way they're structured and the way he builds up to them, but the words are changed ever so slightly. Obviously I'm not saying Gaffigan is a plagiarist because I find him hilarious - for all I know he could have seen these jokes before but forgotten about them and put them in his own routine.
AdamYoxall93 1 year ago
@AdamYoxall93
JonesyA08 1 year ago
its a common joke but yes they are the same.

Not at all similar.... Jim didn't mention the "jeez you have bad __" part, plus it's a very very very common action and thought...
