@apteronote This is the only song Happy's ever covered by Kate, that's been captured. In her early days playing open mics I think I remember hearing she used to cover "Wuthering Heights." I could be wrong on the song but she did cover Kate, but in any case, no recordings of her early days exist. That I know about.

I came to Rhodes through Kate Bush but hadn't realised she'd covered one of her songs till recently. She's always compared to her and God you can see why.. gorgeous rendition.. Rhodes sounds exactly like Kate in the high registers when she wants too but has more of the lower range. I'm glad to see her doing this cover.. i imagine she's an admirer of kates too

I see now ecto sprang from gaffa, i should have paid more attention back then! There's a good long interview up on utube where she talks about her influences including Kate... you've probably already seen it. Since Kate doesn't do much now Happy is carrying that torch masterfully. Can't understand how she isn't massive, but then look at The Magnetic Fields. Popularity seems no arbiter of taste!

I hadn't heard of Happy Rhodes until I came across her cover of Bowie's Space Oddity. I was so impressed that I searched out her other stuff. And this doesn't disappoint me. If Kate's original was wiped from the archives, this is the version I'd choose to replace it.

Kate is using her natural voice these days, but she is no longer using the upper register that she used for "Wuthering Heights". That voice is Kate's "head tone", and no, it's not her natural range.

Any soprano needs to train to keep their reach as wide (esp. high) as possible. And every voice has a head-throat-chest register, nothing unnatural about that, imo...

In Happy's defense, she's a unique artist in her own right, not a cover act. She's recorded 10 albums of her own music, never covered Kate Bush on record (except for quoting one line) and this cover was after years of urging by her biggest fan who also happens to be a big Kate fan.

Her vocalization is more of an immitation of kate than an "interpretation" of her. Pretty voice, but that's the same thing as saying kate bushes voice is pretty.

Happy love's Kate's music, but is well aware of the danger of slavishly imitating another artist. And this was not an attempt to imitate Kate - if she wants to she can exactly reproduce Kate's early vocal sound. IMO, neither Kate nor Happy are natural sopranos. Both trained themselves to sing high, and this sort of "head tone" are going to sound similar.
