I've never looked at an Alger book (I do own a geometric algebra book, maybe more people need to read those), but I do read the news frequently. Did you know that the total exit value for 522 VC-backed companies in 2011 was $53.2bn? That money isn't imaginary. I also don't put all the blame on the people themselves, they're just one part of a control system that determines the output.

And in a 1-20 man operation even the lowliest member is likely to get something substantial. (Usually based on seniority since early employees take a higher risk with the founders taking the highest risk.)

@571jans The top 10% programmers and developers (managing programmers) make rain, but anyone graduating with less than a C average will have trouble finding good work (if they're not skilled or inspired in a way not shown in standard scoring).

Basically, all engineers with a B average or above can pick and choose well paying jobs, while those with lower scores have a though competition. D average engineers are generally not viewed at "competent labour" by the industry.
