Johnny sounds in this version likes he is out of breath on nearly ever stanza. What's interesting is Hank Snow was NOT the first person to do this song. He WAS the first AMERICAN to have a hit with it, however. It was originally written in AUSTRALIA, using names of Aussie towns. Legend has it, Snow heard it on a trip to Australia, but that may be only a 'legend'.
Sorry. I just listened to both versions and I would have to say Mr. Cash's is far superior. Hank Snow was TOO monotone. It made the song boring. Who did it first?
if all y'all people think Hank snow did a better version then quit listening 2 the Johnny cash version and commenting on all the ppl who like this version more it's a matter of wat u like
@ihateall95 ...You have to listen to both versions in order to compare them......As great as Johnny Cash is, and believe me, I love his singing....I have to admit that Hank Snow's version is better.....sorry.
@TheDragonsGhost It was actually first hit the charts in Australia in the late 50's with a version by Australian singer Lucky Starr. Hank rewrote the lyrics to refer to American towns as opposed to Australian towns, and released his version, which was then released by Johnny Cash years later.
@willmanimp Thanks for telling me that, I'm not crash hot on my North American geography unfortunately. Doesn't change that it was originally an Australian song thought =)
@jaromeiginla1 I agree with you. Completely. No contest. Hank Snow has the best version, by a LONG distance, as far as Hackensack (New Jersey, and mentioned in the song) is from Catalina (California, ALSO mentioned in the song)!
@kingkull0423 Johnny Cash is one of my heroes, but, sorry, there's no comparison on this song. HANK SNOW's version is BY FAR the best. Plus, Snow sings it MUCH faster. Plus, Cash seems to be struggling with the lyrics; Hank Snow sings it faster and makes it seem almost EFFORTLESS!
@frozenfood500 But cash has the accent down perfectly, and the nuance. Cash makes you really feel it in his performance. Cash translates it better. Just my opinion.
@kingkull0423 Well, I'll agree with you that he makes you feel his songs just about anyone else. I think it's his earthy quality that make me and others appreciate Johnny so much. He's so sincere. Of course, your reference to "accents": NATURALLY, we ALL have different accents all over the U.S., so there really is no CORRECT accent. And not only that, but Hank Snow is Canadian. I don't really understand what accent you're referring to when you say he has THE accent down perfectly. THE accent????
This is AMAZING! I'm wondering how the hell he was able to sing without taking one breath in those long passages - I'm an opera singer who sings coloratura runs and I'm jealous of him!
The great Johnny Cash...He is missed..

I am surprised that he overflew Africa and said that he had been everywhere. This is something that we can challenge the writer on.
