I saw him first at a department store in Montreal in the mid 70's - he gave a live demo. He was phenomenal - a natural salesman. But tasting the result did the selling. He offered a basic package at a great price - 2 cook books, a brushed steel wok with a very good (if flimsy) lid and basic ingredients - including his "magic powder" (which was actually MSG!!!) That was my first exposure to chinese cooking and has since become my standard - simple and tasty.
Used to watch this when I was really little. Yan and Bruce Lee made me really interested in Chinese and Japanese culture. And eventually bits of the many different ' east asian' cultures.
Wow this brought back so many memories of when I was a child watching this with my dad. I remember trying to make the swan from an apple and many more. Please tell me the entire series is available for download somewhere! I will gladly pay for a copy!
lol he's SO FUNNY!! He's very lively and makes cooking even more fun than it already is!! I used to like to cook, but got frustrated easily (after spending all that effort on cooking, when the food didnt turn out well, I got impatient and frustrated). But he was the first person I saw who cooked with so much passion and ease...and watching him was very entertaining too!! I started to love cooking even more after seeing him!!
"I am gonna cook up another FISH for you, it's the SQUID.", "Now the BIG SQUID, you know, some of them they're called the OCTOPUS." Stephen Yan, you know, he is a genius. I love him. He is the reason, you know, I became a chef. I wish I could handle the cleaver the way he does, you know. Everything he does, you know, is just for you.
OMG! He's still alive!? Man I watched this show when I was a lil kid back then... during my grade school years... I think in the Philippines it was RPN 9(?) which aired his shows.. twas fun to watch and I think I learned a thing or two of the chinese language because of him :) cool!
waahhh grew up watching his show as well here in the philippines.. really great.. too bad.. we only have this video of him.. can any body else add more? thanks! =) kudos to the one who post this.. =)
i first watched "wok with yan" when i was a kid in the philippines--his show was on saturday afternoons back then...we even had a copy of his "chinese recipes" cookbook! it wasn't until more than a decade and a half later when i rediscovered this show upon coming here to canada--incidentally, the country he also called home...now i have the PVR set to omni2 every monday morning! man, i missed his wisecracks!
@mangdannyboy salamat sa pagupload nito mang danny! i was a fan of this show and the other show every sunday the woman who always use a big cleaver, i was 5 years old when i was watching this

i LOVED this show! It was on when I was young and it was the only thing me and my brother could agree on.
Since I didn't see many asians when I was growing up, this was a very positive influence.
His energy his fun and enthusiasm for cooking!
