I think the commodification of virginity has a lot to do with it, actually. People are told not to have sex before marriage. Then people act all surprised when people get married in order to have sex. Perhaps if sexual experimentation with prospective marital partners were permitted, fewer lust-based marriages would result. After all, if love and passion persist once the sexual tension is relieved, then the parties involved can more clearly and confidently consider the decision to marry or not.
