  • Thats how I slice cakes! :P

  • Forget the axe! What vitamins are you taking?

  • @manandmachine2551 Viagra...LOL

  • Great instruction, thank you for sharing. Congrats on the weight loss too!

  • dam?!?!

  • this will beat any log splitter? what about the ones that take a whole log and split it up in about 1minute???

  • @joecool248 I think akkamaan considering the entire econmy, used time, investments, splitting by hand you do not have to go to the gym either. Of course there are log splitters that split faster, and akkamaan have easy straight grain fir, and not knotty oak. But I get his point at this specific type of logs, just straight off the ground, it is pretty efficient with this Fiskars Super Splitter axe

Just let it go with that "beat any hydraulic log splitter", it is just to spice up the video a bit

  • @yayamensun yayamensun, You nailed it....

  • Great idea with the cord. However, you're swinging that axe the hard way....

  • @ellisgarvin So what is wrong with that swing? Can you explain, and also suggest a "better" swing?!

  • @yayamensun Look at 2:10 --he's lifting axe with arms straight out in front of him. Try lifting something heavy with arms outstretched, then again with arms close to your body. It's MUCH heavier the 1st way, because no leverage.

Easier way: after swinging the axe, pull it back close to your body, by sliding top hand up the shaft towards the axe head. Then swing it back and over and down, letting your top hand slide back down the shaft as you swing, all in one fluid motion = easy.

  • @ellisgarvin I understand what you mean, but cant really see that you have a point on this guy....he uses his wrists a lot, and axe is almost vertical before lifting it...that eliminate most of that "bad" leverage you mention...btw...make a video showing how you prefere to swing, that might explain it ....kinda hard to see your point otherwise...

  • putting that bungy strap around the log is a great idea! I'll have to remember that one.

  • @fortesqueca it's not very hard to remember...LOL....btw today I use a 3ft chain combined with the bungy cord....have fun...

  • That is impressive, but keep in mind that he is splitting fir. Could you do the same with maple, ash, beech? NO one burns fir around here due to the abundance of hardwoods and the shortage of softwoods. I suppose if I had a forest full of fir, I would do what you are doing...

  • Does this ol' man really listen to seether?

  • Nothing like watch a pro do his work.

  • thats a small axe...i use a 20 lbs 100% all steel (even neck/handle) split maul...and you cut faster then me :P

  • @ferocio87 That's the total idea with a lighter head...this Fiskars Super Splitter is a 4 1/4 lbs head. The impact energy is a function of mass and velocity squared. That mean that if you can swing down twice as fast with half size head, you still double impact energy...The energy and time to lift the axe still uncounted for..... so I bet that 20lbs head will wear more on you than the firewood logs....LOL

  • What a simple and ingenious idea. After watching this video, I think I am going to go buy that Fiskar and let my brother have my old splitter. Also, I am with the maker of the video on splitting by hand, I actually own a hydraulic splitter and it sits next to the wood pile gathering rust while I stay in shape and walk away with a sense of satisfaction and pride.

  • That Log was a Straight Grain Log , no Knots. I wish Log Splitting was like that in the Real World.

  • very cool im gonna try that next time i split wood

  • Well done mate

  • Simple solution, excellent idea

  • Hey that's a great idea with the bungy cord, we're trying to split hardwood, wish it as easy to cut as your softwood. Good video.

    C ya

  • your nickname should be "Termite". lol

  • its so easy a old man can use it!!!!!

  • You just wait. Some company will come out with a high-tech wood splitting bunjee and sell it for 50 bucks. Great vid,I could almost feel my arms aching.

  • I love to split firewood.

  • listen to old timers kids. . . old timers know their shit.

  • Holy crap that wood seems brittle, what kind is it? I've had experience splitting wood and it seemed a hell of a lot harder than that. You couldn't just hit the top and expect it to split all the way down. I had an eight inch wedge that I had to drive the entire way in to get anything done.

  • @linkdead14 Pay attention and see where to hit....almost at the bark line....also avoid hit where there is a nut close to the line of grain....

This is pretty easy wood to split...Douglas Fir...

  • @akkamaan - I think I was splitting pine, it was a royal pain.

  • @linkdead14 I know,"pine in the a** ", I have 20 10" logs in my pile...pine herae on sea level grows like gigantic bushes...a lot if gnarley stuiff with oversized nuts....LOL, I had to give up on them...let them sit for 6 monts to season a bit....

  • awesome video. great technique.

  • @stagespectre

Thank You! Try the bungee trick and report back...:-)

  • Who is the young man swinging the axe? That is wonderful for your heart, I am 57 and try to give myself a workout every day and i do like the music, though i don't know the group. I like all kinds of music except gangster rap i believe it is called? Or any song that sends a bad message to young people. Again i like the video and the idea.

  • @BoosGrandPa The young man is 58 now....55 on the video...who he is?? ah come on.....

    music??

    Artist: Seether, "Fade Away"

    Thank for your nice comment...

  • I mostly burn scrap lumber in the fireplace.

Good split rounds are very expensive and hard to

    find where I live.

  • Have you tried to split wet wood with this axe? I have some fresh cut 20-inch rounds I'm trying to split with an 8-lb maul and it takes a lot of swings before I can get chunks to break off. I've never split my own firewood before, so I'm trying to get some ideas.

  • @taoh780 You have to hit just inside the bark to get max leverage to crack the round....see video here at 15 sec frame....

  • @akkamaan Thanks for the tip, I tried that and it doesn't take as many hits to get the rounds to crack. The rounds I'm trying to split are actually 35-40 inches, so they still take a lot of strikes but I get a pretty big pile after I'm done splitting it all.

  • Nice. I'd rather hear the sound of the axe and the wood than the music, though.

  • do you recommend a specific log height to make it easier or does it really matter

  • @1000MIKEYRR

These logs were pretty heavy, so I split them of the ground....for me it work best with the top of the logs at beetween knee and hip height or 2.5-3 ft...but thats individual...try what feels best for you...the lower you place the log, the more you can speed up the axe head (more power or splitting force), but then you have to bend your back too...

  • Awesome splitting. Reminds me of how much of an amatuer I actaull am. Down here we have mesquite, and oak. People buy more mesquite than oak, $125 a cord. Very un-profitable by the time you cut.

  • @TheCaskOf43

I am not a pro in any means, but I have tried to refine my swing....LOL.....pretty easy logs to split too, but a lot of fun....

  • Super technique...!

    Thank you for sharing (~:

  • Nice soundtrack , I love that song man. Great video and glad you got off your fat arse. I dropped 30 lbs. I been splitting wood for 20 years and never had this idea, you got me beat.

  • Nice. I've got some fir that needs splitting.

Have you seen the new Fiskars x27? I'm on the fence about buying the 28" or the new 36" super splitter. Wish I could test drive them both before buying.

  • @deasttn Thx!

Yes I have seen it! NOT IMPRESSED! They re-designed the head a little, 1/2" wider edge now. NOT GOOD, will decrease the penetration depth into the log. I am 6' even and I can not utilize the longer handle.

MY ADVICE! Hurry up and buy the older Fiskars Super Splitter model# 7854, before they run out of stock.....

  • @replexanossega 1/2" is about a 20% increase of width....20% less penetration?? I believe, at least it wont get better...

  • @replexanossega

Wider tires on a dragster=more friction

    Wider edge=more friction too

  • @replexanossega i got the x27 th longer handle increases swing speed and power at impact i can take my x27 and split 3 ft poplan blocks it can do 85-90% of the stuff my maul can

  • @deasttn the x27 is good i bought one a month ago its already paid for itself

  • dude you are a bad ass

  • very nice

  • that is easy wood to split in the video. do that with oak or tougher still pecan. no way. get a log splitter and get it done fast. time is money.

  • congrats on losing 70 pounds. now I k now which axe to bring when the zombie apocalypse arrives.

  • 200k views today.....;-)

  • What a douchebag! hahahahahahah I could split those girly logs with a steak knife.

  • i'd probably hit the bungee and have it come flying round to nail me in the shins :P thinking of putting an old tire on my splitting block but its a good tip

  • @ImEuanAndIGotsSkeelz strap it low, and hit the opposite side of the log......you'll never hit the bungee that way...also splits the logs easier

  • @replexanossega Good technique and useful tips man!

@ others: don't use a machine if you can do it yourself with tool and bit of skill

  • hey dude, there is nothing wrong with being a big burley guy lol

  • great infomation in this video thakns for sharing it with us

  • Great video, and I sure like the bungy strap ideal. Like the looks of the Fiskars so much, had to buy one. Just ordered the Fiskars Super Splitting Axe #7854 (maul) from Sears. Not in the store, but got it shipped to my door in 4 days, for a total of $49.57. Can't wait to try it out. Does anyone know about Estwing Axes there made in Rockford, IL, and would like to buy an American made product to offset the Finland model. For the local economy, people are hurting this Christmas.

  • man how do you cut through logs that quick! you are acually a pro at it!

  • @smallenginemods Nope not a pro at all....video is three years old now, and I am still burning on the same stock pile....LOL...I do think I am using a "refined" technique, that I am very comfortable and safe with.

  • i just wish hickory split this easy

  • Oh how I wish that finnish birch was that easy to split >_<

  • great tip, i hope im able to work that fast when im your age! all those years of splitting wood have paid off!

  • where can i buy it????

  • i like the way you stack it how do you do it like that?

  • what type of wood were you splitting in this video?

  • @jesse112693 Douglas Fir....pretty straight grain, not a lot of nuts either...

  • @replexanossega Looks like red oak

  • @jesse112693 Looks like Red Oak

  • Excellent, thanks for the demonstration.

  • Yankee ingenuity! Thanks for sharing your secrets!

  • @looneytoonsindville

"fake yankee", I am Swede, but live in US....LOL

  • nice video - you were doing so well until you said that you could out split a hydraulic splitter, maybe so for 10mins in ideal wood but im telling you now that if you came with me tomorrow with your 'fiskers' and tried keeping up with me and the hydraulic spliter on knotty old Oak you would fail miserably! the hyraulics never get tried! i dont believe you have used one yet have you? at least a decent one anyway?

  • @bodders1029 Hydraulic splitters are for pussies. Split the wood like a real man.

  • @fixedgearforlife - sorry 'real man'..... anyway ive split 200 tons, on average, per year for a decade. Thats enough to see the light, could it be that your blind?

  • orrrrrr u can just get a splitter lol

  • well done

  • Just to help avoid possible confusion, and injury:

An _axe_ is a cutting tool, with an acute-angled bit; meant for cutting mostly ACROSS grain of wood. Typically hardened carbon steel; sharper is better.

A _maul_ is a splitting tool, with a much more obtuse-angled bit (chubby cheeks) meant for splitting wood along grain. Sharpness is less important.

An axe is inefficient for splitting, dangerous for such use, since occasionally it'll slip right through the wood, and head for a shin.

  • @woodscritter So whats your point....read axe and maul definitions on wikipedia....

If you think sharpness is not important when splitting....then wrap a t-shirt around your maul head and try splitting....

I agree that axes are inefficient for splitting, but that doesn't mean that this axe is inefficient when splitting...I think you try to split a hair about definitions here....

  • @replexanossega

You miss my point- an axe is DANGEROUS for splitting wood, because its design did not evolve for splitting. Just trying to avoid some danger for new users who might not understand the difference.

Quoting: "sharpness is less important" for maul. Mine would bludgeon butter, rather than cleanly cut it. Again, an "axe" is a _cutting_ tool, and I've seen what horrible injuries one can inflict with a momentary "oops" splitting. Happy splitting.

  • @woodscritter i use an axe for all my wood splitting too. i find it much easier. who cares what the definition of an axe or a maul is. what ever someone is more comfortable with is probly the best option. the only time i use a maul is doing oak when i really need that extra weight to blast through it with. rules are meant to be broken.

  • @lucasmorter

English is such a great language with all these fancy words.

In finnish it's always just an axe... either it's a cutting axe or splitting axe ^_^

  • I like the bungee cord idea. Try setting your rounds on a chopping block. The block serves three functions: it elevates the piece you're splitting so you don't have to bend over as much, it keeps splitting tool out of dirt, and the additional mass means more of the splitting force goes into the piece you're hitting and less is absorbed by the ground. The bigger and heavier the chopping block is, the better it will work. A car/truck tire on the chopping block works kind of like bungee.

  • @metallicalloy

Thanks for reply...I do have another video with chopping block...

    See my video response...

The difference between a bungee and a tire is that the keep logs tight through out the splitting process...bundling smaller logs together make then ackt like one single BIG log....

  • that was great<can't believe i never thought of that!!!!! thx for the vid

  • @RedneckPeg I think it was a combo...nice wood and a great axe....my point was actually the bungee cord...LOL

  • sir, if you look like that and weigh 250, dont worry about losing any fights any time soon. all you had was a good gut going for you, i cant imagine you at 180.

  • @1994SHOtime Thanks for the cred's....stepped on scale to day showed 177lbs, naked...feel'n gr8....no more beta blocker for raised blood pressure either....

  • i have that axe. it is so sick. really sharp and really light. after a while it feels like your cutting butter. especially with dead cedar and spruce

  • Lets see that on some osage orange or oak, Elm lol

  • I currently use an electric 6-ton splitter from DR. I'm building a 22 ton gas splitter that will be ready in a few weeks. I split oak since I don't have access to the softwoods. If I could get fir, I'd use this maul for sure!

  • VERY NICE WORK MAN.. I WILL DEFINITELY REMEMBER THE ROPE TRICK!!! YOU SPLIT THAT WOOD LIKE A TRUE CHAMP...

  • @TopcityDank

When I made the movie, I definitely didn't think so much about anything else than the benefit of the bungee rope.....I know my logs were pretty easy to split....I have lost 70lbs of weight since that video was made too......hahahaha.....wouldn't have happened with a hydraulic log splitter......LOL

  • that is impressive mate, what sort of wood is that?

  • @steakswans

It is Douglas Fir....live in PNW on Olympic Peninsula...

Pretty straight grain wood..some nuts...not bad to split...I only split D-fir....

  • Splitting by hand is barbaric !!! Not even the Amish split firewood by hand anymore. Even they are hip to the hydraulics, daddy-o. BTW my hydraulic log splitter is super awesome. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • @penn707 ur gay

  • I split wood by hand and with a wood splitter. Splitting by hand is tremendous exercise, I really like that Fiskar, I'm going to get one.

  • @penn707

Sorry that I have to disappoint you Penn707....I DON'T CARE if you have a hundred times faster hydraulic splitter....Ask your mama to put you on a diet....you are probably just a spoiled kid, that haven't learned how to work with your body....

BTW....you FedEx me the hickory logs, I promise to post a video splitting them with my Fiskars.....Condition=FedEx, we do not have Hickory here in The Pacific North West...

Now go back to your video game and iced tea.....

  • @replexanossega not defending this uy or anything but hickory is very very difficult to split for some reason and i bought this same axe because i watched this video in with normal wood like poplar and redoak and pines. it goes straight through just like the video but with hickory you will hit it at least 8 times before it splits the first time with about a 10in diameter round. if u dont believe me tell me and i will post a video proving my point but i cant send you any hickory

  • @jesse112693 I do believe you! I never claimed this was any hard wood to split...It is Douglas fir, and not a lot of nuts.

Please post a video about you splitting hickory....I have never split any else than hemlock, ceder and fir....

  • @replexanossega alright ill try to make a video as soon as possible but it wont be a good quality because all i have is my sisters digital camera. i love to split pine trees because there so much fun when they just explode. but i should have that video up within like 2 weeks if possible.

  • @penn707 If you do like physical work, then pay someone else to do it that's even easier than hydraulics - not everyone has a hydraulic splitter and if the crap hits the fan, what kind of shape are you going to be sitting around drinking iced tea without any physical conditioning or the right tools make certain you keep warm...remember just waddle to the FEMA station and they'll take care of you...

  • @penn707 Why would you argue that your way is lazier? Less experienced and really is the easy way out?

  • @penn707 u wont do anything maybe u machine will until u run out of gas u lazy ho, by the way wheres my money dont make me get the baby powder out

  • im 14 what axe do you think i should get 5 foot 2 inches and average in muscles

  • @H95Shooterv12

I think you can get this Fiskars Super splitting Axe Model# 7854....You are going to grow taller, in a few years you are at least 5'8".....and 160lbs full of muscles...Amazon have them in stock for 33$ just now.....Thats a great price....my local store price is 49$....

Life time warranty.....Life time splitting tool.....Good luck!!

  • whew

  • now that was impressive ! , i want to go and chop some fire wood now ! :)

  • i thought pine firewood

has to much sap ,to stickey

mess up the wood stove and chimney

  • nicee cutting

  • That's lovely wood- a good straight grain. Splitting conifers is a pleasure.

  • I used to split seasoned / dry cuts like that until got tired of sore hands and back. And you can't split fresh cut wood like that easily.

I bought a 6.5 hp gas wood splitter and split all day long and never get tired.

    Hand axes are for dinosaurs.

  • @zodiacair

This is fresh wood, Douglas fir....pretty straight grain and some nuts....glad you like your new log splitter....I like mine too.....

  • @zodiacair You'd be amazed at how well using an axe can work out kinks in your back, though. It's not something you want to do if you're looking for efficiency, but you don't pay for gas and it gives you a strong core.

  • choping wood for a match stick factory there i see

  • I bought one of these axes after watching this vid... it IS awesome. Great design and engineering make for a useful and effective tool. Great splitting axe.

  • thanx ive been getting the hang of it its just the bigger they are i just need to swing harder but i got my technique down thanx for the help :)

  • @TheFalloutMasta Something I find helpful is to keep my feet square. It makes sure all your core strength is directed in one line at the wood. Also, make sure you're swinging the axe down the center of your body for maximum power- not over one shoulder- and that you don't back-swing behind your head. Just before you pull the axe down- and it is a pulling motion- your axe should be vertical, but no further back than that.

  • im splitting and im 13 but im using a hatchet would that be my problem for my struggle or the fact that im 13???

  • @TheFalloutMasta Hi kid! It depends on your body size....at 13 I would go with a little shorter handle and lighter head.... maybe the Model: 7856 SPLITTING AXE-17 INCH or Model: 7853 SPLITTING AXE-23.5 INCH but if you are 5'6" or taller, you might handle the FSS.....good luck... Ps.....remember the short backsving and the vrist snap, for better control.... :-)
  • Per va vad det för träslag ?

Så där lätt har det aldrig gott o klyva ved för mig :)

Men jag iof aldrig haft en sån bra yxa :P

  • @revolution800

Douglas gran...ganska lättkluven.....ungefär som normalkvistig gran

Fiskars Super Splitter model# 7854 med 28 tums skaft....

  • dude you are a beast. impressive.

  • Don't u have håggkåbbs over there?

  • @plymoth1 hahaha....: Håggkåbb (SWE regional dialect) = chopping block....

Yes I use Håggkåbb on smaller rounds...do not need them on 50lbs+ rounds...

  • pls tell me, what ist this song???

  • @MrDrakusek

    Music: Seether - Fade Away

  • I use the same setup but with a small chain and bungee. I can hook the bungee in any of the links for different size logs. Hope I can split like that when I'm that age...lol

  • @OPEJunkie what age??? LOL... was 55 at that video....and I tell you, i am in horrible shape.....I am lucky to have figured the technique out....LOL....It is ALL about technique and the FISKARS SUPER SPLITTER 4 1/4 lbs........

  • lol I'm 35 and I can't even walk fast for long without getting winded....I'm 193lbs You look pro in the video...

  • @OPEJunkie btw....there are ropes you can use to hook up the bungee into, like the chain.....

  • well, I started using the chain because that's all I had at the time

  • @monkeylovedump Thats my philosphy too....use what you have till you get something better....

  • splitting is probably one of the best woodsman things to do... what ax is that? I know its a fisk, but what kind

  • Fiskars Super Splitter, 4 1/4# head and 28" handle....

  • Boy I could give a damn about the ax I'm impressed with this gentleman's fitness...I'd be tired after a couple wacks at it. Cheers to you sir! There is also a guy with a tire on a stump chopping wood..less bending. Your idea is simple, light and no equipment required. Thumbs up! Keep chopping!

  • That's a great tip. It will make my job easier and faster and save me from chasing wood that goes all over. Thanks

  • Elm sucks to slit, but fuck those log splitters. Damn good workout! On those bigger logs, you must chip away from the outside and work your way to the center. Splitting a 20'+ in half is bitch.

  • Yeah like anything in life you attempt to make easier, someone will have a comment. I tried your bungee and string method on some doug fir and it split all at once without having to bend over several times to pick up the wood.Great idea...nice maul you are using also.

  • You can read about this axe performance on the arboristsite forum....link up in he right corner on the detailed info....

  • LOL

  • Thanks for showing people how to do it right. Gubevares cannot chop wood, he needs to take his video down and refer to yours!

  • LOL....It is different styles....true....

  • Great Idea! Why didnt i ever think of that?

  • You wernt lazy enuff!! Like I was....hahahh

  • you will beat any log splitter, well maybe on a nice piece of log like that, but when u have one of those old knotty pieces of oak... ???

  • When I have these rounds stacked up on the ground....nothing can stop me...the only "terminal time" I put in is for the bungee.....

  • hows your back after that

  • I usually use a splitting block, which I also recommend most of the time. But with these heavier logs I prefere to process them on the ground, I know it can hurt my back a little in the long run, but so do lifting 200lbs logs....;-)

  • he makes it look soo easy, and can any 1 explain to me whats the difference of a felling axe and a splitting axe

  • Read my info about the video up in the right corner, theree is one differens explained.....narrower head edge but slightly thicker, makes splitting axe panetrate deeper and that way split easier

  • wow what a technique. very nice.

  • i was drinking beer, seen this video,,, when i sober up,, im gonna go buy an axe like that!!! You should wear steel toes though,,, just in case!!!

  • This gus's a beast!!!

  • Thank you for the credit! But I'm not a "beast", I am actually way overweight, obese to honest, I am not very strong either, 6' tall though......no no no, this is only about safety, precision and technique....plus hitting the log on the right spot, with the best tool there is....FSS, Fiskars Super Splitter....

  • Dudes Pro 5 stars,

  • how much does this weigh and how much money will it cost? i'm starting to hurt using my traditional maul lol

  • 4.25# head 28" handle, less than 50$ at Ace or Amazon etc....prices varies from 35-50$....

yes...1 hr with regular 8-10# maul = 4+ hours with this Fiskars Super Splitter, and much less frustration....

  • i think ill get one lol

  • Comment removed

  • nice accuracy my friend

  • It is like playing golf, precision shots made with shorter backswing.....

  • awesome. i spent more than half my time today picking up the logs i was splitting. thanks for posting.

  • ;-)

  • Great skill.

  • Your a machine! lol cool vid good tip 5 stars
