O tubo é uma válvula e as válvulas liberam um feixe de elétrons quando tem o filamento aquecido (numa tv com a caixa com aberturas grandes dá pra ver os três filamentos brilhando na base do tubo, a parte mais fina que parece uma ampola de vidro).

Os pixels (pontos de imagem formados por três pontos de fósforo fosforescente de três cores, vermelho, verde e azul) são iluminados por esse feixe e formam a imagem.O feixe varre a tela da esquerda pra direita de cima pra baixo.
