To the Idiots that no nothing of John Wayne or how Patriotic he was to America Hush Your mouths If you don't like it then don't put it on, He was not a Draft Dodger and considering i am English and appear to know more that you lot, Read his life Story before you make a judgement GOD BLESS YOU JOHN WAYNE YOU WERE A GREAT MAN AND YOU ARE AMERICA AND ALL IT STANDS FOR
According to Gary Wills’ book “John Wayne’s America,” the man who portrayed the archetypal, battle-hardened Marine, Sgt. Stryker, in 1949’s “The Sands of Iwo Jima,” actually avoided the draft during WWII. Wills contends that the Duke did not reply to letters from the Selective Service system, and applied for deferments. Apparently, Wayne got his big break during the struggle against fascism when many Hollywood action heroes like Tyrone Power enlisted and shipped out overseas.
John Wayne was NOT a daft dodger. he volunteered, but was declared 4F and not allowed to serve. he still wanted to serve his country, so he agreed to make patriotic movies instead.
I am not an American nor a Christian but unabashedly I love this great country and deeply admire the leadership it provides to the world in the matters of not only science and technology but also freedom and charity. It is the last bastion of hope for the mankind. God bless America, the strongest yet the kindest country.
@rosemarie443 This prose (not a song) was written to explain the history of TAPS...the song played by bugle every night when the Flag is lowered, or at the funeral of any Soldier (traditionally). The story began with the Civil War, so that is what Mitchum wrote about.
@BlackRoseMolly I know very well where this song came from it was written by a conferdate soldier for his son that was killed in battle, and when they agreed to let him have is sung, he could only pick one instrument to play it, so he picked the bugle.
@BlankfrackCripledFUK what the hell this crap; you wrote "well hung dead HIV faggots." neither men had HIV i guess since you said that then maybe you have HIV or are inbred.
Johy Wayne, was a total coward. Why did he not fight for his country? He made his career on the back of people like James Steward. James Steward is my American hero.
@Donald6899 So you are saying all those who did not fight for their country are cowards? All those who supported, loved, appreciated their troops, but didn't fight themselves are cowards? Those who would like to defend their country but are unable to, are cowards?
The true coward is the one who disowns their country, disrespects their country, burns the flag of their country.
deuxchem, yes John Wayne is dead, wow profound statement, but face reality, he has been gone for 30 plus years and still has people who respect him, where as you, well its just sad, isn't, sad that you didnt have what it takes to make something of yourself, you almost earn my sympathy but your not quite worth it.
From an old Sailor (73 yo), I thank you for posting this video I was one of the fortunate who came home, Many of my shipmates did not, May they all RIP.
@tailspin37 John, did you serve in WW2, Veitnam, or Korea? My PopPop served in the Korean war. He would have passed three years ago February 5th. I salute you.
Thank you for serving,
legoman1800 (Vince Tucci)
P.S.
after highschool, I want to join the Military as well.
@marinesarelife1 Congradulations! I, in my previous comment, am going into the USAF after highschool. My PopPop was a vet in the Korean War. His brother was in the Navy during Vietnam i think. Now my brother is thinking of joining the Navy as well. I wish you luck. Good Luck. May God in his divine power, look over our troops and may He keep them safe.
douchchem: I served in the special forces, 1/7 SFG(A) 3/20SFG (A) also with the 82nd, totaled 3 combat tours. John Wayne is still my hero next to my father. Do you know why he didnt serve, maybe you should do a little research. But your probably to dumb and lazy. So how much have you served, most likely never, your just a jealous looser always pissed at the world for the way your turned out.
Yea and ure about as stupid as they come too. so get off that he was a draft doger stupid. SO go smoke what ever ure somking somewhere else and leave john wayne alone. If you really wanna pick on someone go pick on sone of the dumb butts we now have in washington dc
Seriously? Why do people idolize Wayne. He was only an actor who pretended to be a soldier. He never wore an actual uniform. Basically a draft dodger.
@deuxchem he was a great actor and many people grew up watching his movies. He was a native Iowan just like myself. I think was and still is a great man. He is an iconic figure of the american dream. i am not arguing with you or insulting you wish to insult John Wayne, then you obviously dont understand how fantastic he really was.
@deuxchem Get your facts straight, he was exempt from the draft when WWII started due to his age at the time Pearl Harbor was bombed he was 34 above draft age. A draft dodger is someone like Muhammad Ali who wouldn't fight for religious reasons but made a fortune beating the hell out of people. (Guess is ok to beat them up just not kill em)
@deuxchem He was not able to go due to age and his contract. If you would research, he used his fame to boost the morale of the troops and tried to help the cause any way he could. He was NOT happy that he could not go.
Why is it that we do not have any singers, songwriters, actors, etc. who have taken it upon themselves to do services such as this one done by John Wayne. Red Skeleton did the Pledge, Johnny Cash did Ragged Old Flag. Where are all these songs/poems now when we need them the most?! Thank God that we had some GREAT americans such as these men who loved thier country so much. God bless AMerica and all that defend her!!!
I think Tim Magraw did a pretty good job with the song after 9-11 2001.
I also think that the time singing artist Tim Magraw, Toby Keith just to name a few as many have been there it takes time and bravery to entertain our troops while we are at war and to me that is a tribute to them as well as this video is... We the USA may not remember it but at the time our troops are doing battle I am sure they are grateful that they have these great men there to entertain them!!
Thank you soldiers...Our women & men putting their lives on the line for our safety and freedoms....I'll never go a day without thinking of what you've done and are still doing.....You are loved.....
John Wayne was truly a great American and patriot. God Bless him and all the brave men & women who have served and who serve now in our outstanding military forces! They (and their families) deserve the thanks and support of this nation. Semper Fi!
God bless John Wayne, he was never allowed to wear the uniform in defense of this country but none the less I consider him to be one of the greatest American solders that ever lived! America is the lesser without him, he never once apologized for America's failure to succeed, but then again he never had to. America has always done all she could to better humanity and the world and that's all God and man can ask. The best you can do.
I have friends in Arlington... There is the true cost of Freedom. When we joined the Military we signed a blank check... payable with our lives to protect America & our Freedom. Too many paid that high price,.. our finest are resting in Arlington.
they could't have picked a better man for this!! Thank you all who have, do, will risk their lives to keep america free!

This would be so much less offensive if Wayne, the draft -dodging coward, wasn't reading it.
Couldn't they find an actor who didn't hide behind his celebrity to avoid fighting?
And then go on to make millions as the phony patriot? ? ?
Vomit.
