Now that Phil has discovered JK, we're all better off. John is far more melodic and conversional in his playing - far closer to Jerry in spirit, ability, tone, and touch.
i think Phil does just fine singing his own material. I'd prefer that he lets someone else sing Franklin's Tower next time.
The one good thing I will say for Warren is that I like his voice, especially the Brent songs. but it's not worth having him on stage screwing up the guitar parts.
warren is a southern rock/ blues guy and has plenty of experience in that genre. but he butchered the Dead's material spring '09 tour. i've been listening to the Dead since the early '80s and am a musician my self, so I've got a frame of reference. i saw The Dead twice in April and warren did not know the melody or words (Alabama Getaway!), nor did he know the chord changes. he sent the train off the tracks MANY times (one China -> Rider jam bug time). just stick to the Allman Brothers.
This is, in fact, the only time I prefer Bobby to Jerry on a Jerry song. Personally, I think Bobby tends to do the "Terrapin Station" part of "Terrapin Station" more justice than Jerry did.
I'm the biggest JK fan in the world, but I cannot b*tch about Bobby taking this part...he just does it with such sincerity, I cannot resist.
I was there at all three shows and they were stunning. John (the Jerry guy) brought down the house with Althea on the first night. There were weak points but overall I wish the Dead would dump Warren Haynes and go with the Jerry guy from DSO. awesome incredible spectacular
you are crazy. warren was unprepared, and did not do his job. he did not LEAD the band anywhere (except maybe to the next buffet). he was awful and hopefully willnever play with the boys again.
hey guy, Warren only played with lesh for over 10 years! Where have you been? He's a better guitarist than JK in the sense that he has many more years of experience. I thought he played great on the Dead tour, not to mention all the fantastic phil lesh and friends show's. I don't get it? why would phil play with him if he was'nt one of the best? How many times did you really see him play? do you understand the music at all, or are you extremely opinionated? later for you!
please Bobby... let others sing Jerry's parts. Give them all to Phil, he rocked them with "Friends". Enough with the lyric f*ck ups. I want the Philathon!!!
As far as phil's voice goes I think myself and others have been extremely gracious about his singing. More then this I'd rather not say, if you know what I mean?
also, i would prefer that john pay attention to the guitar duties as much as possible... i think he's a much better guitar player when he's not singing.
Jerry was the same way. watch the closing of winterland dvd. almost any time jerry is singing, he is hardly playing his guitar. But once he stops singing he is right on it...
It seems if you watch videos chronologically that John sings more n more. Maybe the people are givin feedback and the boys are listenin.

yeah, but jerry's "right on it" was quite a bit different... and his vocals were enough better to make the lapse in guitar worth it.
just my opinion.

i prefer the part that bobby sang. that sounds more "authentic" to me.
that being said, this lineup has a lot of potential.
