i would only attend an HBCU for one year. when you come from a suburb you can only tolerate the hood for so long. you can't fake it. trying to be humble with people who do not have what you have will only frustrate you. it's great to see black people united in an academic environment. however, i've heard from several suburbans that you will quickly get thrown under the bus when you have too much.
In response to the comment above. that young lady was so right for saying that comment. By allowing so many not qualified students into the colleges and allowing them to take classes with the students who are qualified it hinders the progression of those students who are where they need to be. I sat in her shoes so I totally understand for the price that you pay it is unacceptable regardless of the mission. For $30,000+ you should not be held back by not prepared people!!!
Every school has nerds, losers, party animals, cool people, and all that. What's important is that you get in not "where you fit in", but get in WHERE YOU WANT TO BE.
Here's one lesson I'm sooo glad I've learned: people create their own environment wherever they go. My best friend and I are like night and day so we have different opinions about things, and comparing notes with her has taught me that yeah, YOU may go to this place or that place and experience X, Y and Z. But thats YOU-- the places YOU hang at, the people YOU associate with, et cetera.
I attend Tennessee State University, and I am a freshman frm Gary Indiana. I was accepte to all the colleges i applied to with scholarships (Howard, Central, TSU, Lane and Ball State), YOu have to remember tht HBCUs are funded like the white schools are. Tha is clear and evident a TSU. So majority of the money that hbcu recieves is directed towards the up keep of it. I'm payin over 22,000 a year as an outta state student. But that is onlya drop in the bucket becuz of the lack of funding we have.
I never comment on videos but some of these reactions and ignorant comments need to be addressed. The AUC is an amazing place for young African Americans because it provides an experience that no other institution of higher learning can duplicate. Yes the surrounding neighborhood isn't the safest but before I attended Spelman, I went to visit many schools (HBCU's and majority schools) and most were located in the "hood". This included ivy league and state schools. Also calling the schools or an
@LilMamii06 i don't know about Clark, but as far as Spelman goes please don't let this video change your mind. I was never called a B**** or H** or anything else. I guess it all depends on the environment you chose to be in. I would suggest you take a visit to see for yourself. I LOVE SPELMAN COLLEGE : )
i've been excepted into dillard, benedict, and south carolina, now im just waiting on Hampton and Xavier....to say yes...this video makes me second guess black colleges.
Very interesting! LMAO @ the guy taking a cold shower! I also really like what the lady @ 4:14 is saying. That's some real shi that applies to any campus.
ya'll airing all our dirty laundry!!! lol well oh well only we know whats its really like here. we talk mess but if any one gangs up on us we all run to eachothers aid lol. I love my AUC fam =) Spelmanite 2012 wonder what happened to these freshies?? they're like graduating this year..wow
I graduated from Clark in 08 and I would change it for anything! Yea, some of things you are going to complain about, but once its over, you will miss everything!!! I cant complain too much about the AUC, because I met my husband there who went to Morehouse! YAY AUC! Missing my school!!
What's up with the youngsters complaining about Our HBCU's being Ghetto? Anywhere a predominately Black Population exists, they are going to be referred to as Ghetto! The term is an outgrowth of Nazi Germany hoarding Jews into one sector of the city because they were considered second class citizens. We must stop referring to our communities as Ghettos. Ivy League White schools produces more Criminals than any HBCU. Check Wall Street Fraudsters, Enron, Bernie Madoff, etc. They are the real thugs
OMG... i move into Spelman tomorrow (( Manley )) . I've found this video in fall of last year... never really gave it any thought, but now.... hhhhmmmmm
Because Clark Atlanta University is not the AUC it it only is apart of the AUC. Are talking Atanta University??? I just finished my frist year at Clark Atlanta University and I would not trade it for the world. Because that is so much history here that you can get from any other school.
Let me help you out. AUC does stand Atlanta University Center. Atlanta University was a Seperate School. CAU was called Clark College and in 1988 AU and CC merged to form THE MIGHTY CAU.
Graduated from Morehouse in '05...I see things haven't changed much...but I promised there Isn't a better place on the planet than the AUC. I'm in my last year of medical school in nebraska, and if you thought you were treated like trash in the AUC??? just wait until you try higher education at a caucasian establishment...The AUC is what it is, as long as you know who you are, you won't have any problems...and move off campus sophomore year...fareal
okay.. wait so spelman they say is ghetto or clark atlanta? I'm so confused haha I'm thinking about going to spelman but if they says its ghetto..im second guessing
from my experience just about every HBCU is going to be what youre not expecting. Just visit any school you plan on attending. Im starting @ Spelman in the fall and the fact that people say its ghetto doesnt really matter to me. Im not from the suburbs anyhow and i used to attend Grambling (missin it). : )
Look you cant hope where the school is. The schools where there before the ghetto was. And dont think for one minute that you are better then the people in the area cuz changes are your not. I am a Clark Atlanta University C/O '12
I am a graduation senior at Clark Atlanta and Ive been here all four years. Everything is what you make it. Yeah its in the ghetto and all dat, thats why u visit a college before you attend it. So i knew what i was getting myself into. I am a communications major and i love it here. im glad i came here
I like this video because it gave some pros and cons. I stay with my grandmother just outside the Westend and cant wait to get to Clark Atlanta. i know that what they are saying is true but the real world is just the same.
ok seriously this is ridiculous I am from the suburbs as well and I dont know if im going to be able to make it at Clark I am not sure if that is the place for me any more maybe I should go to GSU.... cold showers, i have all these loans im takin out, nd crackheads wtf
First of all you can be in the middle of ghetto and know how to protect yourself. It's a word for it...Oh yes, I remember street smarts. Remember first of all, if you don't feel so safe, why would you attend?
Ignorance is bliss. Young black people have no respect, no pride, and no sense of history. The schools are HBCU's and are placed in predominantly black neighborhoods because that is what they are catering to, Young African-Americans. Understand the role that HBCU's in Atlanta play in people who really don't get an opportunity to go to college. This portrayal comes off negatively about the AUC with some bright spots of intelligence by some of the young people. Question? Where is MBC in this film?
Mo B's whereabouts... I could only think of two possibilities. It was either left out because of the all too familiar prejudice found within the AUC. Or, unless the matter has been corrected, Morris Brown has lost its accreditation. The latter is truly a shame. I, a man of Morehouse, had my negative views of MBC early on in my academic growth. However, I've come to know Mo B as a producer of some of the finest minds of our time.
I am an AUC freshman and I feel like I have every right to complain. Especially for $30,000.CAU is a wonderful institution but there is much work to be done from the inside. Before I came here I THOUGHT I was from the hood. Apparently not. I don't think I should have to be afraid to walk outside of my dorm after a certain hour. This is a private school, there should be some kind of say over who can and cannot come on campus.I never expected to see so many grown ass men on campus just hanging out.
I am a graduate of an HBCU and in response to the comment about dumb ppl being accepted to school, I would like to emphasize that black schools have a unique mission. Unlike a lot of white schools,HBCUs accept excellent students in conjunction with those who weren't adequately prepared for college in high school. They tap into a segment of the population that generally ignored by the mainstream. I'm not knockin the young lady because b4 I saw the bigger picture, I had that same thought.
@tincredible PLZZZ LETS BE SERIOUS THE MAJORITY OF THESE HBCU ARE PARTY COLLEGES ..THEY ACCEPT PEOPLE WHO BARLEY MADE IT OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL WITH A 1.0 AVERAGE GPA AND IQ OF A ROCK..LOL THESE SCHOOLS DOESNT GUARANTEE YOU THE BEST EDUCATION OUT THERE ESPECIALLY AFTER YOU GRADUATE EMPLOYERS DONT CARE YOU WENT TO HOWARD, HAMPTON OR CLARK ATLANTA UNLESS..UMM THEY'RE BLACK...WHICH GIVES YOU A VERY SLIM CHANCE OF GAINING EMPLOYMENT JUST CHECK THE STATISTICS
@KissMyClawsTV I am living proof that HBCUs, prdoduce the cream of the crop. I come from a family of Black professionals: lawyers, doctors, and educators, pharmacist- almost all of whom were educated at HBCUs. In fact, almost every sucessessful Black person I know graduated from and HBCU (and I know plenty).
Party college?? Ha.... Anytime you get thousands of youngsters between 18 and 23 together, there is going to be some partying, regardless of the racial composition of the school.
@tincredible OKAY WE;; 1.) WITH THE STATE OF THE EDUCATION IN THIS SOCIETY RIGHT NOW ESPECIALLY IN THE BLACK COMMUNITIES A "BLACK EDUCATOR" GRADUATING FROM A HBCU IS NOTHING TO BRAG ABOUT RIGHT NOW..LOL BELIEVE ME..YOUNG BLACK MEN GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL..WELL BARELY ..AND GET TO COLLEGE AND SPEND 90% OF THEIR TIME IN REMEDIAL MATH..
@tincredible 2.) THIS IS A FACT THE IVY LEAGUE SCHOOLS SUCH AS YALE..PENN STATE..AND OTHERS ARE PRODUCING THE EDUCATED LAWYERS..DOCTORS ETC..IF I WANT TO ATTEND A STEP SHOW AND HOMECOMMING I'LL GO TO HOWARD OR VIRGINIA STATE UNION LOL ..IF I WANT TO TAKE MY EDUCATION SERIOUSLY IVY LEAGUE IS WHERE I'LL GO...
@KissMyClawsTV. 1) What schools have you attended to even know that of which you speak? Also, direct me to the statistical data that say that HBCU grads are bound to stay unemployed. I am speaking from a place of first-hand knowledge and experience. Your statements are based o stereotypes and nothing else. I have attended both black and white schools, and I feel that I received a great education at both.
@tincredible POINT ME TO A PLACE THAT SHOWS STATISTICAL DATA THAT GOING TO AN HBCU GIVES YOU A BETTER CHANCE OF GAINING EMPLOYMENT OVER THE IVY LEAGUE COLLEGES OUT HERE LETS FACE IT ..I DONT MAKE THE RULES BUT I UNDERSTAND THIS GAME..1.) EMPLOYERS CONDUCT THEIR INTERVIEWS AND COULD CARE LESS YOU JUST GRADUATED FROM HOWARD OR TUSKEGEE SMH THEY WANT TO KNOW HOW AREYOU ABLE TO PERFORM WELL IN A DIVERSE SETTING AND THATS NOT SOMETHING A HBCU PREPARES YOU FOR
@KissMyClawsTV Wait a minute! I thought you said that employers DO CARE if you went to a Black school. Because you said they look negatively upon it. (YOUR WORDS) You are contadicting yourself. Do you even know the point you're trying to make? The HBCU graduates that I know making 6 or 7 figure salaries are peforming damn well. My HBCU prepared me for a diverse setting, because my professors forewarned us about the racism in the "real" world. Yes, my professors talked openly about race.
@tincredible YES I DO..AND I MADE ITA LONG TIME AGO ..LOL DEBATE OVER WITH..YOUR PROFESSORS PREPARED YOU FOR THE REAL WORLD BECAUSE THEY "OPENLY" SPOKE ABOUT RACE..LOL OKAY WELL TRY "OPENLY" DEALING WITH IT ON A JOB INTERVIEW..THEN COME BACK TO ME OKAY? BYE
@tincredible I SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE BEING OUT HERE IN THE REAL WORLD WHILE GOING TO SCHOOL ..JOHN JAY COLLEGE A PREDOMINATELY "HISPANIC" SETTING ..I'VE BEEN ON INTERVIEWS AND THIS IS HOW IT IS..
@KissMyClawsTV If it wasn't for HBCU grduates like Thurgood Marshall, MLK, etc( products of Howard, Lincoln, and Morehouse), who fought, risked their lives, and successfully won the battle for school integration, then a white college/university wouldn't even be an option for Blacks like yourself.
My final point: If a potential employee doesn't want to hire me because I went to a Black school, then I don't wanna work for the racist bastard anyway. I don't placate to bigots. Goodbye.
@KissMyClawsTV I guess I have to face the fact that here will always be Blacks who posesses inferiority complexes and have been socialized and trained to think the worst of anything that is Black; those who strongly believe that anything that is eurocentric in nature is automatically better.
Lastly, it may be wise to use correct grammer when critisising SOMEONE ELSE'S education. Otherwise you appear to be to be exactly like "those uneducated HBCU people" that you despise.
@tincredible SEE ...LOL PPL LIKE YOU ARE FUNNY..ANYTIME OTHER BLACK PEOPLE HAVE A OPINION DIFFERENT FROM YOU ABOUT HBCU's..THEY ALL OF A SUDDEN "THINK WORSE OF ANYTHING BLACK"..LOL CHECK YOURSELF..2.) YOU THE ONE TO TALK ABOUT GRAMMAR MR."CRITISISING"???????? "CRITICISING" SPELL CHECK THAT ASS NEXT TIME BABY...BUT THEN AGAIN HOWARD TAUGHT YOU WELL..LOL GOOD BYE
@KissMyClawsTV Self-hating negroes like you are even funnier. Hitting the wrong button and making a typo is not the same thing is not knowing when to use don't/doesn't in a sentence. A simple mistake is different from a complete lack of knowledge. Obviously, John Jay did a shabby job of teaching you English Composition.
For the record, Howard produces a large percentage the nation's Black lawyers and doctors.
@tincredible LOL WHAT RECORD???WHERE'S THE FACTS BITTER NEGRO? PLEASE TELL ME...U CANT..SEE THATS A HBCU WILL DO TO YOU...UNABLE TO BACK UP YOUR FACTS..LOL BUT I SEE YOU USED SPELL CHECK THOUGH...LOL YOU TOOK MY ADVICE...NEXT TIME HUN USE FACTS IN A DEBATE NOT BIAS OPINIONS YOU'LL LOOK STUPID EVERYTIME..DONE
@KissMyClawsTV I WILL have to deal with it openly with it on a job interview. I am a dark-skinned Black man. Who in the hell can ignore the elephant in the room. I don't have to announce my Blackness, when a potential employer looks at me, THEY SEE IT. Secondly, I don't have to depend on white people for a job. I'm well connected within the Black professional community. I have to look no further than MY OWN BLACK FAMILY AND FRIENDS for a prosperous career.
It's about helping one another, improving one another, and growing as Human Beings. And yes they can be expensive, but that's because many are privately funded. I'm not just talking about it for the hell of it either. I'm doing my part in the community, giving back to my school, and working hard in the real world, Not because i may want/have to, but because others did it so I could have this opportunity to help make a change too. I love my HBCUs and will support them. - LeMoyne-Owen c/o 03 -
Don't complain, give back and make a difference. We are the only people who complain about "our" schools, but never do anything to improve them. Wht folks schools weren't always nice, but they give back millions of dollars to make it better. TRY IT!!!
You have to understand the history and purpose of an HBCU. More than likely that area was not like that in the beginning anyway, but if you don't put back into your community what do you think will happen. You also have dumb people everywhere so to think you wouldn't see them at an HBCU is DUMB ON YOUR Part!
Despite of the location Spelman and Morehouse have a beautiful campus. Also, I see that some posters wrote that it is across from the projects. The projects they are referring to are the University Homes Project which is now all boarded up, closed and scheduled to be torn down and rebuilt into a mixed-income real estate development. Crime is everywhere you have to be street smart know you just can't go off campus at 2:00 am for something to eat and think you are not at risk of being jacked!
1 more thing...when i went there, i heard shots fired 2-3 times a week in the ghetto that cuts the campus in half...if that doesn't qualify as real ghetto, then you don't know hood when you see it.
I went to CAU by way of Inglewood, California, and the reason we don't got to Berkeley is to attend a black college. Clear? You expect to see aspiring young world changes (future MLK's and that), but get there and everybody wanna be Yung Jocc!
lol WOW I have visited 16 HBCU's Spellman and CAU was one of them I have been to Morehouse because my cousin Taye attends he is a junior there.. HBCU's are pretty much the same everywhere Black kids kids of color trying to make it while facing issues of other college kids its fun to learn the different backgrounds and culture u open up your mind more and learn at HBCU's ..Cali kids come way across country to go to HBCU's and complain? Why u aint go to Berkely???
Im mad everyone iz competing on how ghetto or gangsta there school iz, tht shit iz dumb school iz bout education not who hooder than the other smh..plus bein hood or gangsta aint whatz craccin, ur life iz at sake
I don't think the areas are "bad" maybe they're just rundown parts of the city. Yea they don't have gardens and landscaping and fountains, these schools where just built and the upkeeping around them made them undesirable places to be. Seriously visit many of the Ivy League schools...
I agree with mostly everything they said. I wish I would've seen this video before I wasted 2 years of my life at AAMU. Not that all colleges are the same but it would've given me insight. The disrespect was HORRIBLE at my school and the ignorance level was high too. I am now transfering because I will find the perfect HBCU for me! HBCU's are the best and I appreciate them for what they provide but I wish they'd have a required class on ETIQUETTE!!!!
actually some HBCUs do have etiquette classes or atleast sort of. My cousin goes 2 howard and she says they teach the boys that they should hold a door open for a lady and if its late walk her to her destination on campus. Hampton U has a dress code on campus that prevents students from walkin around in doo rags and booty shorts. I want to go to spelman myself, and i dont think spelman girls are stuck up. i think they have more respect for themselves and plan onmaking it in america's society
I actually appreciate this video. I attend an HBCU as well but the school that I go to, Coppin State University, is located in Baltimore, MD. Ive heard many rumors about how HBCU's further down south are sooo much different. They seem the same to me.
I went to Spelman from 90-94 and my first thoughts were the same, I couldn't believe the AUC was in the middle of the projects...but it was actually cool, at first it's a little overwhelming, especially if you are not used to that, but you get used to it....I loved it after I adjusted and realized that it was just like my own neighborhood in Cali, while not the projects, it has its unsavory aspects but when you live there, it's all good and you get used to it and learn to love it.
Don't forget the prestigious IVY League school UPENN is in the ghetto! and for the Brownfox guy, USC is not in the burbs, my dumb youtube friend it's very much in the hood. UCLA is as close 2 the burbs as ur going to get out of the 2 :)
whoever gave this comment a thumbs up is VERY ignorant...I negated it with a htumbs down tho. UPENN is in University City a section of Philadelphia that is actually quite nice since the surrounding area is basically all college students and like 4 other colleges right outside of Center City. its just URBAN...and URBAN DOES NOT EQUATE GHETTO...wake up people...South PHilly, kinda hood wit gehtto areas...North Philly where Temple is...THAT'S GEHTTO! lol
Seeing, that I lived in Philly....I Think I would know whats ghetto and whats not....And, what I was trying to get almost all good/prestigious schools are somewhat in bad areas that doesn't mean the school is bad. I know the difference between Urban and Ghetto....I was simply, calling out Brownfox for his idiotic comments about schools being in the ghetto....And im laughing, at the fact you think UPENN is in a nice area lol....Good day to you....
THANK YOU SHELLY...at least one person on this thing seemed to have payed attention in history class when talkin about class structures and cities. I dare one UPENN student to even spend a night at Coppin State University...in Baltimore...West Baltimore. See how much of that walkin around at night they do there like they do in the "ghetto" in philly
Im a USC grad "02' in the hood of SC LA. Know why your in school. Don't allow your current location to dictate your final destiny. Four years will fly by.........Get the knowledge to live your dreams, I guarantee you in four years you will look back at this video and see just how much you've grown- and how how immature you once were. Stay focused on the Prize- Success to You. William Pratt Phd
Lol i love this video but its true most HBCU's are in the ghetto im at one of the less popular ones ALABAMA STATE UNIVERSITY we get shot at and robbed at gun point soooo yall aint really sayin nuthin BUT THAT BOY MUST GO TO CLARK LOL IT REALLY DOES LOOK LIKE THE PROJECTS THERE AND IM FROM NY AND SOME PROJECTS IN ATL DONT LOOK LIKE PROJECTS BUT AT CLARK IT LOOKS LIKE THE PROJECTS
that is to Brownfox1981 , i wont be checking ur replies now, because i see that you are uneducated on these matters, so why even go further, "never argue with fools", so let me stop doing that
you guys do know that USC, yes USC is right in the middle of the hood, yes it's in South Central, it has the smallest rooms (closet size) and the white people there pay sooooo much money and they love it... so get over it, most HBCUs are in the hood, duh, black people made a school that they can go to, where the hell else you think it would be after slavery... and most HBCus adopted near by projects to hekp out there people, so they are acutally on campus, not near it.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Do you research before you make a stupid comment like that. There were no project back then. UCLA, Temple, Columbia, are all in the hood. FYI South Central is a section of L.A. USC is the University of South Carolina. The Univseristy of Southern California is not in the hood at all.
you don't live in l.a, do your research, USC (cali) is in the ghetto, no surburb in sight, and HBCUs all adopted projects, you don't go to a HBCU, you know nothing... and my junior high magnet is apart of their school (USC) and my friend lives near there, and i live close to it now... they're library has a big gang problem and therefore many people and kids don't like to go there, now research that, i live in the ghetto and USC is in it!
HU class of 2003. Crossed the burning sands in 01. Trust me I forgot more about HBCUs than most will ever know. First things first back in the 1800's there were no housing projects. Housing urban areas sprung up where ever there were jobs. Hampton, Lincoln, FamU, and plenty of other HBCUs are in the burbs. Once again UCLA is in the hood, USC is in the burbs.
i live and grew up in cali (los angeles) and i've been callsed a bitch sooooooooo many times when i wouldn't give up my number, so i dunno what she's talking about, and in cali, there are soooooooooo many crackheads and bums and they are even ehite ones, and some of them are in beverly hills, so hay!
someone let me no wus up, cus i wanna go 2 Spelman n i thought Spelman is where it's at n now i'm seeing all these negative things n i don't no wut 2 do..if anyone goes 2 Spelman, let me no wuts da deal.. i don't want to come all da way from Canada to da ATL for dis for real..OMG,especially da price for skul..n i'm definitley not ballin, LOL!..i'm probally gonna end up on some loan or sumthing.
I know this is super late but I graduated from Spelman and it is definitely worth it. True, the AUC in general has its downfalls but trust me, it is no different than the real world. I am now working out of the country and I thought that the minor difficulties in the AUC were bad...wrong! Compared to the real world, it really is nothing. I love Spelman and value the experiences I had there. I wouldn't change it for anything.
Spelman is ranked the #1 HBCU in America by US News & World Report. You can't go wrong by attending Spelman. But before you Head south you might want to work on your writing skills and grammer, because they are seriously entrenched in EBONICS! Which is Truly Ignorant! So before you complain about what's negative, check yourself first.
I love the legacy but really... i hate paying 30,000+ and I can't walk on the grass!!! Spelman is in my family and everyone knows... it's not what it used to be.
Spelman College is still a wonderful institution. My sister graudated in 02 and went on to attend The University of Pennsylvnia (the ivy) Medical School, and her friend attend Harvard Law School. It is one of the best HBCU's in the country. At any college their will be those who fall behind. With hard work and effort, Spelman can open many doors for young African American women.
I visited Spelman and the projects is like right there lol My grandfather and my mom was like who lives here? are these dorms? because they are really close to the campus. I'm not so sure about those cold showers and bad food. No thank you sorry!
I love Morehouse. It was a step parent for me for 4 years and I thank God almighty I had the chance to attend. I put up with cold showers, long lines, bad food, and sub pa facilities....And I loved every minute.

AUC stands for Atlanta University Center
Anjanee09 2 years ago
I'm wondering, if it is called Clark Atlanta University, then why do they call it AUC, instead of CAU?
Haliek2010 2 years ago
the AUC is the Atlanta university center. it consits of CAU, Spelman, Morehouse, Morris Brown && ITC
babyann1029 2 years ago
Because Clark Atlanta University is not the AUC it it only is apart of the AUC. Are talking Atanta University??? I just finished my frist year at Clark Atlanta University and I would not trade it for the world. Because that is so much history here that you can get from any other school.
MizerakKinchens 2 years ago
Let me help you out. AUC does stand Atlanta University Center. Atlanta University was a Seperate School. CAU was called Clark College and in 1988 AU and CC merged to form THE MIGHTY CAU.
desmonM 2 years ago
Graduated from Morehouse in '05...I see things haven't changed much...but I promised there Isn't a better place on the planet than the AUC. I'm in my last year of medical school in nebraska, and if you thought you were treated like trash in the AUC??? just wait until you try higher education at a caucasian establishment...The AUC is what it is, as long as you know who you are, you won't have any problems...and move off campus sophomore year...fareal

from my experience just about every HBCU is going to be what youre not expecting.

KingscarKillah 3 years ago 5

This is a private school, there should be some kind of say over who can and cannot come on campus.I never expected to see so many grown ass men on campus just hanging out.
brwnsknbeauty08 3 years ago 5
I am a graduate of an HBCU and in response to the comment about dumb ppl being accepted to school, I would like to emphasize that black schools have a unique mission. Unlike a lot of white schools,HBCUs accept excellent students in conjunction with those who weren't adequately prepared for college in high school. They tap into a segment of the population that generally ignored by the mainstream. I'm not knockin the young lady because b4 I saw the bigger picture, I had that same thought.
tincredible 3 years ago 23
KissMyClawsTV 5 months ago
@KissMyClawsTV I am living proof that HBCUs, prdoduce the cream of the crop. I come from a family of Black professionals: lawyers, doctors, and educators, pharmacist- almost all of whom were educated at HBCUs. In fact, almost every sucessessful Black person I know graduated from and HBCU (and I know plenty).
Party college?? Ha.... Anytime you get thousands of youngsters between 18 and 23 together, there is going to be some partying, regardless of the racial composition of the school.
tincredible 5 months ago
KissMyClawsTV 5 months ago
KissMyClawsTV 5 months ago
@KissMyClawsTV. 1) What schools have you attended to even know that of which you speak? Also, direct me to the statistical data that say that HBCU grads are bound to stay unemployed. I am speaking from a place of first-hand knowledge and experience. Your statements are based o stereotypes and nothing else. I have attended both black and white schools, and I feel that I received a great education at both.
tincredible 5 months ago
@tincredible POINT ME TO A PLACE THAT SHOWS STATISTICAL DATA THAT GOING TO AN HBCU GIVES YOU A BETTER CHANCE OF GAINING EMPLOYMENT OVER THE IVY LEAGUE COLLEGES OUT HERE LETS FACE IT ..I DONT MAKE THE RULES BUT I UNDERSTAND THIS GAME..1.) EMPLOYERS CONDUCT THEIR INTERVIEWS AND COULD CARE LESS YOU JUST GRADUATED FROM HOWARD OR TUSKEGEE SMH THEY WANT TO KNOW HOW AREYOU ABLE TO PERFORM WELL IN A DIVERSE SETTING AND THATS NOT SOMETHING A HBCU PREPARES YOU FOR
KissMyClawsTV 5 months ago
@KissMyClawsTV Wait a minute! I thought you said that employers DO CARE if you went to a Black school. Because you said they look negatively upon it. (YOUR WORDS) You are contadicting yourself. Do you even know the point you're trying to make? The HBCU graduates that I know making 6 or 7 figure salaries are peforming damn well. My HBCU prepared me for a diverse setting, because my professors forewarned us about the racism in the "real" world. Yes, my professors talked openly about race.
tincredible 5 months ago
@tincredible YES I DO..AND I MADE ITA LONG TIME AGO ..LOL DEBATE OVER WITH..YOUR PROFESSORS PREPARED YOU FOR THE REAL WORLD BECAUSE THEY "OPENLY" SPOKE ABOUT RACE..LOL OKAY WELL TRY "OPENLY" DEALING WITH IT ON A JOB INTERVIEW..THEN COME BACK TO ME OKAY? BYE

Goodbye.

JUST FACE IT...THE HBCUs ARE THE NASTY SHIT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE BARRELL....

Otherwise you appear to be to be exactly like "those uneducated HBCU people" that you despise.
tincredible 5 months ago
@tincredible SEE ...LOL PPL LIKE YOU ARE FUNNY..ANYTIME OTHER BLACK PEOPLE HAVE A OPINION DIFFERENT FROM YOU ABOUT HBCU's..THEY ALL OF A SUDDEN "THINK WORSE OF ANYTHING BLACK"..LOL CHECK YOURSELF..2.) @KissMyClawsTV Self-hating negroes like you are even funnier.

- LeMoyne-Owen c/o 03 -
nuperior 3 years ago
Don't complain, give back and make a difference. We are the only people who complain about "our" schools, but never do anything to improve them. Wht folks schools weren't always nice, but they give back millions of dollars to make it better. TRY IT!!!
nuperior 3 years ago 4
You have to understand the history and purpose of an HBCU. More than likely that area was not like that in the beginning anyway, but if you don't put back into your community what do you think will happen. You also have dumb people everywhere so to think you wouldn't see them at an HBCU is DUMB ON YOUR Part!
nuperior 3 years ago
Despite of the location Spelman and Morehouse have a beautiful campus. Also, I see that some posters wrote that it is across from the projects. The projects they are referring to are the University Homes Project which is now all boarded up, closed and scheduled to be torn down and rebuilt into a mixed-income real estate development. Crime is everywhere you have to be street smart know you just can't go off campus at 2:00 am for something to eat and think you are not at risk of being jacked!
lieutenantswife 3 years ago
1 more thing...when i went there, i heard shots fired 2-3 times a week in the ghetto that cuts the campus in half...if that doesn't qualify as real ghetto, then you don't know hood when you see it.

I don't think the areas are "bad" maybe they're just rundown parts of the city. Yea they don't have gardens and landscaping and fountains, these schools where just built and the upkeeping around them made them undesirable places to be. Seriously visit many of the Ivy League schools...
shellybell123 3 years ago
I agree with mostly everything they said. I wish I would've seen this video before I wasted 2 years of my life at AAMU. Not that all colleges are the same but it would've given me insight. The disrespect was HORRIBLE at my school and the ignorance level was high too. I am now transfering because I will find the perfect HBCU for me! HBCU's are the best and I appreciate them for what they provide but I wish they'd have a required class on ETIQUETTE!!!!
shellybell123 3 years ago
actually some HBCUs do have etiquette classes or atleast sort of. My cousin goes 2 howard and she says they teach the boys that they should hold a door open for a lady and if its late walk her to her destination on campus. Hampton U has a dress code on campus that prevents students from walkin around in doo rags and booty shorts. I want to go to spelman myself, and i dont think spelman girls are stuck up. i think they have more respect for themselves and plan onmaking it in america's society
jamericangrl816 3 years ago 2

BOOTIEMAC 3 years ago 3
whoever gave this comment a thumbs up is VERY ignorant...I negated it with a htumbs down tho. UPENN is in University City a section of Philadelphia that is actually quite nice since the surrounding area is basically all college students and like 4 other colleges right outside of Center City. its just URBAN...and URBAN DOES NOT EQUATE GHETTO...wake up people...South PHilly, kinda hood wit gehtto areas...North Philly where Temple is...THAT'S GEHTTO! lol
beaux1 3 years ago
Seeing, that I lived in Philly....I Think I would know whats ghetto and whats not....And, what I was trying to get almost all good/prestigious schools are somewhat in bad areas that doesn't mean the school is bad. I know the difference between Urban and Ghetto....I was simply, calling out Brownfox for his idiotic comments about schools being in the ghetto....And im laughing, at the fact you think UPENN is in a nice area lol....Good day to you....

you guys do know that USC, yes USC is right in the middle of the hood, yes it's in South Central, it has the smallest rooms (closet size) and the white people there pay sooooo much money and they love it... so get over it, most HBCUs are in the hood, duh, black people made a school that they can go to, where the hell else you think it would be after slavery... and most HBCus adopted near by projects to hekp out there people, so they are acutally on campus, not near it.
ppetal 3 years ago 3
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Do you research before you make a stupid comment like that. There were no project back then. UCLA, Temple, Columbia, are all in the hood. FYI South Central is a section of L.A. USC is the University of South Carolina. The Univseristy of Southern California is not in the hood at all.
Brownfox1981 3 years ago
you don't live in l.a, do your research, USC (cali) is in the ghetto, no surburb in sight, and HBCUs all adopted projects, you don't go to a HBCU, you know nothing... and my junior high magnet is apart of their school (USC) and my friend lives near there, and i live close to it now... they're library has a big gang problem and therefore many people and kids don't like to go there, now research that, i live in the ghetto and USC is in it!

It is one of the best HBCU's in the country. At any college their will be those who fall behind. With hard work and effort, Spelman can open many doors for young African American women.
