  • It's 'Póg mo thóin ' boys... nothing else, and it mean kiss my arse. End of.

    Pronounced Po-gue muh hone ...

Póg sounds like rogue but with a PO instead of RO.

The 'mo' is a very short word, so sounds like Muh (as in the first syllable of Muppet ... mu-pet), barely a sound when said in a sentence.

Thóin rhymes with sounds like tone, phone etc

  • Oh my goodness. I come from a little town in Australia called Monto and I have Monto Q on my car's number plate. Never knew the name's history before. Guess I should have followed Luke and the Dubliners when I was a teenager. Love 'em. Thanks for the beautiful music and the education!

  • My father taught my daughter to sing this when she was three years old. They werent very happy in the playschool went she started singing it at the top of her voice!!

  • pog mo thoin lol

  • I don't think he was saying Luke has an English accent I think he was saying the part where Luke was doing an english accent was to a tee

  • english accent , what n insult , for the rest of idiots ,they r Irish band

  • english accent?????????????????? fuck off

  • Amazing . . . to watch this video and others from the late 60's and early 70's of the original Dubliners (I know, John Sheahan is not technically an original member, but he joined the group in its earliest stages) at the height of their abilities and as they define the standard by which we still judge Irish vocal music, much as the Chieftains set the standard for instrumental Irish music. Mesmerizing . . .

  • When Carey told on Skin-the-Goat

O'Donnell met him on the boat

He wished he'd never been afloat

    The dirty skite

    It wasn't very sensible

    To tell on the Invincibles

They stood up for their principles

    Day and night!

And they all went up to Monto, Monto, Monto ...

  • how we miss them. legends

  • childer LMAO, havent heard that in ages :L:L

  • Heh, you can tell the true performers by how much fun they have while they're at it... and Luke is definitely having a lot of fun.

  • I nearly despaired at this.

I thought The Dubliners used to be a great (or so I thought) "Irish Folk Band"

Through much investigation,I now realise they were an enigma,The old stories captured in their songs were often newly minted.but could easily date back to the 18th century, like many actually where!.

They were not a great Irish folk band.

They were music for the world, and like The Beatles, will outlive the 21st century.

  • A favorite of gert.....

  • i love luke's face when he comes on :D

  • you love his face coz he's fuckin pissed lol

    still a hero tho!!!!

  • Up the Furry Glen !! Were they talking bout the pub on parkgate street or was it something else ?

  • the Monto was near Gardiner st in Dublin 1-inner city, near Amien's st. I came from Sherriff St-North wall where Luke kelly was from.

  • Thanks for the reply, but i was asking about the Furry Glen ? Theres a pub called that on Park Gate St. I was wondering if that was the place they were singing bout when they sang Up the Furry Glen or did it mean something else.

  • The Furry Glen is also an area of the Phoenix Park.

  • Sound, thanks 4 that...

  • LOL I must have a filthy mind! I always thought "Furry Glen" was a euphemism for "lady parts..." especially within the context of this song.

  • R.I.P. luke and ronnie true irish legends

  • both men missed 2 true irish heros

  • He skipped a verse.. but its still good ;D

  • what a great song what a great singer

  • All so missed in Dublin!

  • Sad to hear that ronnie has passed on (I live abroad now) many happy memories of after hours sessions in the smallest pub in Manchester with Luke and ronnie and the boys in the 70's.Used to sell out the free trade hall three nights in a row but had more fun singing in the pub for a pint of porter and a BlackBush!! Slainté from France.

  • The Dubliners...thank you from Finland.

  • wonderful

  • I think he says "the polis band", polis just means the police, specially in Scotland.

  • Definitely "Police".

The Police, like everyone else targeted in the song, were English or loyal to the crown.

  • Take me up ta monto monto monto rip luke and ronnie

  • luke keely best of the lot

  • Well, it's my favorite. Among them at least!

By the way what's 'langeroo', lads? Does it mean something?

  • looks like hes realy enjoyin this one.

  • The Queen she came to call on us,

She wanted to see all of us

I'm glad she didn't fall on us, she's eighteen stone.

"Mister Me Lord Mayor," says she,

"Is this all you've got to show me?"

"Why, no ma'am there's some more to see, Póg mo thóin!"

And he took her up Monto, Monto, Monto

Take her up to Monto, lan-ge- roo,

    To you!

  • Now when the Tsar of Russia

    And the King of Prussia

Landed in the Phoenix in a big balloon,

    They asked the police band

To play "The Wearin' of the Green"

But the buggers in the depot didn't know the tune.

So they both went up to Monto, Monto, Monto

Take her up to Monto, lan-ge- roo,

    To you!

  • When Carey told on Skin-the-goat,

O'Donnell caught him on the boat

He wished he'd never been afloat, the dirty skite.

    'Twasn't very sensible

    To tell on the Invincibles

They stood up for their principles, day and night.

And they all went up to Monto, Monto, Monto

They all went up to Monto, lan-ge- roo,

    To you!

  • You see the Dublin Fusiliers,

    The dirty old bamboozlers,

They went and got the childer, one, two, three.

    Marching from the Linen Hall

    There's one for every cannonball,

And Vicky's going to send them all, o'er the sea.

But first go up to Monto, Monto, Monto

First go up to Monto, lan-ge- roo,

    To you!

  • The dirty Duke of Gloucester,

    The dirty old impostor

Took his mot and lost her, up the Furry Glen.

He first put on his bowler

And he buttoned up his trousers,

And he whistled for a growler and he said, "My man!"

Take me up to Monto, Monto, Monto

Take me up to Monto, lan-ge- roo,

    To you!

  • Well, if you've got a wing-o,

    Take her up to Ring-o

    Where the waxies sing-o all the day;

If you've had your fill of porter, And you can't go any further

Give your man the order: "Back to the Quay!"

And take her up to Monto, Monto, Monto

Take her up to Monto, lan-ge- roo,

    To you!

  • proud, proud, proud to be a dub and to be from the best little island in the world , god bless ya luke and all the lads!
