  • expensive but worth it

  • Hey I recently picked up one of these and he seems healthy enough, sits on the top of this drawbridge for hours doing his filter thing but I also only have one other fish currently that I feed tropical flakes. Would it be a good idea to get Daphnia for the shrimp since I also don't have living plants?

  • @clank1 The living plants won't affect the shrimp. The shrimp is filtering for very small bits of algae and microscopic foods. It's entirely possible that the 1 fish in the tank + sunlight and other light sources will provide enough energy for small bits of algae to form and feed the shrimp. I would definitely keep an eye on it though - if his color starts lightening or he starts walking on the bottom, it means he's not getting enough food. In that case, adding would work.

  • i'm having a bit of a particle and algae problem in my 29 gallon tank and i'm planning on getting one of these shrimp. he would be perfect since i have plenty of broad leaved plants for him to sit on, and a power filter and air pump so there is water flowing throughout the tank. What i'm wondering though is how much these shrimp cost on average?

  • @SunFlightx They're usually between $10 and $15. Try and get the darkest red, with a darker stripe on the back... They lose their color when they're starving.

  • @pytchfork ok i'll keep that in mind, thanks.

  • @cleerin Your shrimp is starving (and very near death). It is common to get these from the pet store and they are already starving.

A bamboo shrimp walking on the floor of a tank is a starving shrimp. To eat, it must have some fast moving water (like water out of a filter or pump). These guys eat by catching microscopic particles in their 4 front armlike appendages... In order to catch particles, water must be moving quickly.

To save your shrimp you need some water flow/movement. Good luck!

  • hey my bamboo shrimp witch i had 4 a day stoped moving his just on the floor like not moving idk if his dead his not on his side do but if i take him out of the tank he sudenly moves a little idk if his sick so pls help

  • I like ur tank

  • hey i got one from petco to

  • @MrGushyman Make sure to have some kind of water flow, either via a water filter or a pump. These guys love a dirty aquarium with tidbits of algae and a pump to push the water and debris (microscopic debris) over their filters. If you see him walking around on the floor of the aquarium, he's close to starving and you will need to figure out some way to get something nutritious for him.

  • I got one a couple months ago but it liked staying in the filter and one day it got scared by something smashed up against da glass a nd started to bleed and later that day it died

  • I just got one from someone on craig's list. Going to read up on them now.

  • those things look cool im going to get one from petco

  • He's really cute. They all are. Definitely my favourites :)
