Well I gave it a go, and managed to get my legs about 45 degrees back from the vertical, with a slight tingling sensation in the base of my feet and a painful neck. I've stretched for years but can still not toes my toes, I think I have a medical problem.

You don't have to, I use a towel. But the mats are really nice to have.
