  • 1984

  • Yup, I had been looking for this for years too. Saw it on Bravo in the 90s some time. It had vividly stuck with me for years and years. I don't have a good memory but everybody I told about this phantom video would get every last detail. It's amazing that a work can do that. So to Chuck, I say I'm grateful I found this and incredibly well done. Keep creating; your mind is astounding.

  • @HolstonEllis Thanks so much. I love that this little film has had such a lasting impact! I hope it continues spreading the message!

    Peace,

    Chuck

  • Thanks again for all the great comments! I hope Shadow Puppets still has an impact on folks after all these years... the message is the same!

  • Chuck, went to RIT 92-95 and cant remember how i first seen this. Been thinking about the concept of "1984" and remembered this, and soo so happy you have in online. Great Film. Both makes me Sad and Happy, what a great range of emotions. Blows me away. Congrats on all your Accomplishments with it. Please always leave it online for us to share. Blessings.

shadow puppet, the title makes me chuckles within myself.

    Thanks for sharing :)

  • O HERMOZOO !!!!!!!!!!!!

  • FINALLY!! I have also been looking for this for years. I don't remember if I saw it on Bravo or at a Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation in the 90s. But I have thought of this animation many, many times and really didn't know if I'd ever be able to see it again.

I am now a senior Animation student, double-majoring in Painting. I told my instructor about this short a few days ago, and went on the hunt again. I can't wait to share it.

Thank you for this inspiring gem!!!

  • Love, love, LOVE this! I saw it just by chance while in grad school, and it always stuck with me. Sooooo glad it is on Youtube, ad can be shared with others!!!

  • thank you. chuck...really beautiful, wonderful and sad film..i gonna burst out may tears....i gonna sleepless tonight.................really really heart wrenching.....

  • Wauw, this film has been haunting me for years, I've been searching for it, just to be sure that it was not something i dreamt. I saw it when I was a little girl, only 8 or 9 and I'm 24 now. I rememberd it so vividly the bird, and the woman shadow puppet, and when he opend the chest the second time he would have no fingers, and it still made my eyes tear up.

Your film makes me feel both sad and hopeful... Thanks for making a film that has touched me and maked me think.. and gave me nightmares ;)

  • I saw this short in the late 90's on cable access in Austin, TX and it moved me like nothing I've ever seen before. I loved it and spent years looking for it again. Thanks to a Redditor (herenorthere) I can experience it all over again and share it with my friends. Thanks for creating this amazing film. It's brilliant!

  • I think that i had watched it on HBO or Cinemax - they had a short film festival

  • Usuario1971, WOW! you have a great memory! Yes, it did at one point have the clock going backwards. Had to re-edit to shorten length so cut that out. Always liked that part but something had to go.

    Where/when did you see it?

Thanks for your kind comment. I am working on another animation but slow going while I try to fit it in among work.

  • @chukchukchuk Back then I saw your animation over and over again, so it's only natural I remember every detail ;)

I saw it on spanish public television. The program is called Metropolis (still ongoing. (wwwrtve.es/television/metropolis/ It's about contemporary art)

It was during the 90's. I think something like 1995-97, but not completely sure.

If you would like more accurate information about it you can ask them at info.metropolis-at-rtve.es

Thanks again, and keep up the good work!

  • But I remember the clock was going backwards and he was going crazy cause the time to leave didn't come, am I right?

Many thanks for sharing this, and hope you're still making beautiful works like this one.

    Thanks again for your work!!!

  • I can't believe I found this animation after so many years, and posted by the artist himself, no less!!

I`ve been looking for it for years! Back then I saw it on an art tv program during the 90's on my country, Spain (the tv show is called Metropolis, TVE public television), and I even taped it on video because it was so great. I remember they said it was made with Flash program, no sofisticated effects but a wonderful result.

  • @usuario1971 I saw it at the same tv program, and I've been looking for it for ages, thank God a kind soul found it and send the link for me...and I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it.

My God this film it's been on my mind for all this time it's absolutly wonderful, thank you from the bottom of my heart for doing it.

  • Chuck,

This animation is one of the reasons I became an Artist. So glad to see this again!

  • @Jeremiasstelter That's great to hear! When/where did you see it?

  • Chuck, So glad to see this video available online. This film is a good example of oppression in Human Rights issue especially for the Deaf culture. They have fear of colonization of cochlea implant users that they prefer not to use Sign Language among mainstream world. I plan to share this with Gallaudet University students where I am currently teaching film courses. Thanks for sharing. ~Prof. Tracey Salaway

  • @fisheyevisualarts

Hello Tracey, I appreciate your comments very much! My intent was to show defeat of oppression by persistence and commitment. Glad that it reaches such diverse personal issues. Interesting that when I made this film I was co-teaching animation students at NTID (National Technical Institute for the Deaf) in Rochester, NY!

I would be happy to send you a DVD if you would like.

    Chuck

  • This was so Beautiful. :)

It made me cry! Its so Sad yet so happy. Well done. :3

  • Dang O.O that place is by far brutal, i would hate to work there Dx

  • I cant believe i just found this! I saw this when I was 10, around 2:30 A.M. in a strangers house in the dark. and i was never the same,, took me 9 years to remember what it was and look for it....a nightmarish memory.........

  • Now that's true talent... Reminds me of that Benigni-movie, "La vita è bella".

  • I just watched this today in my Scriptwriting for Animation class with Skip Battaglia and also Sten Mckenzie is in the class. I have to say the storyline is amazing. for me the timing is a bit off at the end because I did guess the surprise or the resolution to the climax and design wise for 92 it's astonishing!. Thanks!

  • ...............:(............

  • I watch this frequently, Chuck. Love it.

  • Disturbing and made me feel dead inside :(

  • aww :)

  • Never get tired of the message and the way it sticks in your head for days after seeing it. I first saw it more than 10 years ago and was thrilled to see it again...so simple, yet so meaningful. Nice work CUZ.

  • Love it!

  • Fucking Hell, absolutely amazing!

  • Chuck, I saw this late at night in the late 90s with an old housemate and we were both transfixed. Since then, I have spent years and years looking for this, to no avail. I retold the story of this little film to many people, but of course it didn't translate that well. Today I guess I just entered the right combo of search terms and I found it! I am just as moved by it as I was all those years ago, and overjoyed to have found it. Thank you for creating this.

  • Hi Chuck. You gave me a copy of Shadow Puppets to take to Russia in 1992.

  • Hello,

I hope you enjoy seeing Shadow Puppets again! How did it go in Russia... if you can remember that long ago!?

    Regards,

    Chuck

  • Im surprised I came across this. Must have seen it over ten years ago and just thought of it. Forunately the title is the same keyword I thought of.

    Amazing

  • Whoa!! Well done! Kudos on this one. I hope it has been shown in many an animation festival.

  • Extraordinary.

  • Absolutely genious...

  • 1984.

    V Vendetta.

    Fahrenheit 451.

    Please, freedom.

I didn't think I would ever be able to see this again. You ROCK!!! Sometimes something comes, out of what seems nowhere, that really touches you. This artist and the story he tells, so simply, but also so deep, is just Incredible!!

  • I am so glad to finally have found this!!! My instructor in college showed this to us in our creative process class. I saw it about 5 years ago, and it has always stayed with me, and I had always wanted to see it again. So glad I found it! I have since got married, so I can't wait to show my husband. VERY inspiring and touching!

  • I watched this many years ago on Bravo (back when they were actually showing content that was worthwhile) I memorized the tittle and your name and had been searching for it ever since. I'm really glad you uploaded this to YouTube and I have had a chance to watch it again and share it with others.

It's even better than I remembered it.

  • This is a beautiful picture. I saw it probably 10 years ago on a television compilation and loved it. For the past couple of years, though, I've been trying to remember the title, and tonight I succeeded!!

  • I love this animation, saw it for the first time two years ago without sound, finally saw it today with sound. Chilling.

  • i'm so excited this is on you tube. I havent seen it since you showed it in animation class, and now i can show it off to others! youre pretty fantastic, chuck. (xxoo - liz)

  • I'd not seen this for months. I needed to see it again. In the video it was some brutal physical tyrants controlling us.

But to us today it's that we human beings are living in the matrix but without the matrix because our matrix is our own minds.

  • Add me to the list of people that sob when they see it. It made a huge impression on me when I first saw it so many years ago and it still does. Thank you for posting this

  • i saw this on bravo one night at like 3am. i cried so hard it hurt. thank you so much for posting it. i have been searching for it for years. every now and then i google it but i couldnt find anything. thank you thank you thank you.

  • i don't know if there's any deepness in this vid to it's maker but it's defenetly there for many

  • I seen this short on tv several years back. I remember looking for it about 5 years ago, but i couldn't find it. I'm happy to see it here. Loved it then, still love it now. :)

  • *Sigh*

    The sadest,

    most amazing video ever :)

  • Wow,

    What an amazing clip ]

  • The attention to detail is stunning. Macabre pallette yet a hope inspiring theme. Truly a masterpiece. That made my day.

  • I'm just crying right now.

  • i just saw this clip on my Image Theory class... i think it is amazing. It's an example of waht we all should do " get over difficulties and opression and get free". Thank you so much for making it public!!

  • Wow, that was so amazingly beautiful. Thank you.

  • This describes the European Union

  • I saw this clip at a short film festival at the George Eastman house in Rochester, NY about 15 years ago, and I absolutely loved it. If memory serves correct, I think the festival was called "Movies on a shoe string". Chuck was a senior in college or recently graduated when he submitted this clip. I think he won an award for best animation that night.

I looked for this clip on-line from time to time, hoping that it would surface on the web so I could see it again.

    Thanks for posting!

  • Yet the aggressor has not / did not come back and hack off his toes (yet)...

  • You're going to have to start charging for these insights. You are selling yourself short! You don't need to be fr3, your good...LOL

  • Ah, you jest with me.

  • LOL...Well I just subbed to you, trying to get in on the ground floor!

  • Well why charge for what should perhaps be free anyway?

  • I'm American...guess we're all too brain damaged from living under Fascism lately, too think in such a non corporate way. LOL

  • No it just comes from me being sick and exasperated of consumerism, corporatism, profit before people, etc. Oh, and there's a lot more I became sick and exasperated of.

  • Me and you both brother!

  • wow what a fantastic video. It's one of my current faves (no wait all time faves) and I've watched around around 9900 vids on here. Are you planning to upload more animation vids? I'm actually thinking about quitting my art history university and studying 3danimation at another one.

  • Wow...do you know I think I may have seen this before? Please tell me where I might have seen this? I am totally dumbfounded...

Ok. I'm collected. This is a classic work on the box society clasps on people and the will to spring out of that box...this work is under-appreciated and that is an understatement.

  • in a previous lifetime perhaps? De ja vu?

  • awesome!

  • brilliant.

  • this will be stuck in my head for the rest of my live. thank you for uploading this!

  • Chuk, you've shared in our loss....Great SF!! I'm so glad you posted it, it has given me a new perspective on what has happened. HOPE is good and your film has inspired me.

  • Oooooh Chuck you are online now!! WOOHOO!! I love this video!!!!

  • wow. amazing!

  • The surreal industrial world and the inability to utilize self expression are well defined. The strength in finding self expression was also illuminating.

    In short: It rocked!
