By far my favorite GD tune. The truth cannot be nailed any harder than this. But note, the politicians are not in control of any country...money is. The few who make the profits at the expense of the many, call the shots. Our freedoms are dictated by it. Capitalism, not democracy, rules. While capitalism may rule the day, it won't always, as history has shown. People will continue to struggle with people at all social levels, and that will usher in new era's, as it has always been.
How about the change Bobby sings in the current versions, instead of money green or proletarian gray, it is money green it's the only way you can buy a whole goddamn goverment TODAY!!!!!!
@Deadhead14141: I'll take that link if you want to share it with me. Love these guys. Missin' the old days. Still on the bus though. Furthur keeps me pretty happy with Bobby and Phil. Miss Donna and Jerry though :{
Naw, as a collector of bootlegs, and a fan of Grateful Dead, and Jerry, and Kreutzemann, YOU GOTTA BE KIDDING that that video cuts s off right there, k.
I cried hearing this on the radio this morning. Power of the lyrics while getting my son ready for school combined with my concert memories, (still Making them) and my boys future it was too much for me. I tried to explain but it wasn't conveying. He is playing hooky today and getting a GD lesson. Also he will see his first Furthur Show Spring East Coast. We all have to try harder if we are gonna fix this place.
((((Phil)))) Still droppin' bombs at 70. I like how Phil seems to play more notes in Furthur and really drives the music in that band . To me, it's like his playing is a little "wordier"...and i sure don't mind :)
This song makes me weep - "for it's all too clear we're on our own" - so the choice is ours: to be nice to one another, work toward mutual understanding, common decency, human rights, and a civil world, or scramble for gratification and security until we're trampled under or die anyway - and what do people do?
Shooting powders back and forth, black goes south and white goes north, and this WHOLE world with its petty wars, Ive got mine and you got yours........Singing someones got to TURN THE PAGE. And that rich man in his summer home...
at like 8:20 jerry just looks on with an impressed look on his face thinking something like either damn im fucked up or damn bobbys really ripping this shit up
@leroimoore41 I'm a bass player. That look is one I'm familiar with- it's the "we are feelin it" and when you get into that mindset, even if you play garbage, it STILL feels good. It's like a natural high I guess
What a fine take on this very heavy and telling song, thanks for posting it! Seems to describe our politically run world today so well...unfortunately. Fight organized crime...Re elect NO ONE!!!
This song is more relevant today than its ever been. War, nuclear annihilation...all those things are still scary and timely, but when I think what we're doing to the environment, this song takes on a whole new meaning. The Grateful Dead - still cutting edge in 2010.
I would die happy having seen this song live, but that'll never happen. Jerry died a couple of weeks after I was conceived, ironically, so my mom didn't have to worry about taking me on the spring tour. I sure do wish Furthur would play this.
Phil Lesh is my vote for the undisputed best workingman bass guitar player of ALL TIME! Sometimes, I think it's jerry playing the bass notes, but, it's Phil, he's such a tight player, and he's so funky, and I so love it when he gets his Phil on like Bobby does sometimes, lmao ^5
WoW! Their playing seems much tighter than normal doesn't it...
I'm not a huge fan of theirs. I do love about 12 of their "hits" though. It seems to me that Phil Lesh is under rated as a bass player or is that just me?
@TalkingHeadsRock oh you're one of THOSE! Yeah all musicians have good days, but when the boys had to play stuff like"truckin'" for folks like you it wasn't a great day for us heads.
@alligayda One of "THOSE" haha, your so funny. I don't care what you say. You think just because you are a poser that claims EVERY song of theirs is good you are a better person?
Lets face it, they have 12 to 15 GREAT songs that deadheads and "THOSE" other people like. That is more than most groups.
There is nothing wrong with playing "Truckin". I am sure they were proud of playing that song jackass.
You are just the type of obsessive fan that scared them just like Vince Welnick did.
@TalkingHeadsRock name calling really isn't neccessary. For recording puposes we just liked to get more rare music, anyone can get a thousand copies of truckin', dig? And just so's you know I'm a peice of sh*t just like you, never said I was better just obviously very, very diferent. "Free your mind and your as* will follow". "poser", if you knew me, is a most ludrious acusation and I find that rather funny. WE LOVE YOU and that thing you seem to have stuck up your well. . .we love you!
@alligayda Everything I said about them was positive. You come on here with negative vibes looking down on me calling me one of "THOSE" people like there is something wrong with loving like a dozen songs of theirs and not loving all their work. You are the type of person that turned the grateful dead in to a thing for rich people and presidents. Not that there is anything wrong with that. It is cool that Bill Clinton has something to say when Jerry died. Music is for everyone not just you.
@TalkingHeadsRock I apologize, you don't know me, and you didn't know that I don't believe in stereotypes which makes what I said a joke. No negative vibes from my side of the fence, there's nothin' wrong with you that a little more bran and a lot more jerry won't cure, might I suggest a long session with the pizza tapes? You seem to have enough time on your hands. I'm well aware of my insignificance in the universe. Are you aware of yours?
@alligayda The music is for everyone. You can't expect everyone to "get" all of their work. As long as people know the hits the hardcore fans can search out the rest. All I can say is do NOT discourage younger people from trying to experience SOME of the songs or their music will become forgotten over time. I happen to enjoy young people like carter3carter doing a Grateful Dead video but I'm sure it makes you sick? Some people say how can a young person like GD. Music has no age limit.
@TalkingHeadsRock certainly Phil can never get enough credit for the role he played and continues to play in the Grateful Dead Saga (if you will). That said, I wouldn't say he's underrated; I'm pretty sure he gets his dues as one of the greatest bassists ever. It's just that the GD always existed on the "fringes of society", and so maybe not always mentioned in the same breath as other classic acts of the last 35 years.
@TalkingHeadsRock It must just be you, ha ha... no Phil does not get enough praise far as I'm concerned. But us Dead fans just know he rules our world.
I have always considered Phil to be as much a lead musician as Jerry and Bob. I mean, even when he's just playing bass in the verses it's like he's soloing out anyway. I've always thought of him as being Jerry's bass equivalent. I don't think people realize how truly complex his bass lines are.
@TalkingHeadsRock Yea phil is way underrated and trained as a classical musician. I think he is AWESOME but he is not that charismatic and I hear he can be a dick to fans sometimes.
@TalkingHeadsRock -Phil= very underrated among those not in 'the know' I guess. IMO among the greatest, if not the greatest Rock n Roll bassist of all time. He doesn't just 'lay down bass lines' to 'keep the beat', he takes it to a whole other level of playing...almost as if it were "lead Bass". Also, to me, they were always playing 'tight'....just in their own way.

@TNAisWWEv2 That is cool. They are a great band for sure. In the 80's there were so many GD posers though it was insane. At that time I think they became over commercialized....especially as far as merchandise goes.
