hey lester. thanks for putting this vid. . I'd say i prefer the yamaha ( i own one LOL).There Might be a little bias there but i really did the yamaha (smiles)
Smith sound is the greatest for fingerstyle i love the mix of smith's low growl and mid sound, fender got its superiority on low punchy slap, for yamaha, i think i agree with you, it's a great bass for your back up.
i dont have any smith, yamaha, nor fender, but i personally will choose smith, for all performance. well, sometimes i need to perform slap, no big deal, i'll just cut the mid, boost the low.. :)
FIRST OF ALL SORRY, I DO NOT SPEAK ENGLISH, USE A TRANSLATOR. KNOW THE YAMAHA TRB 1005, THAT YOU THINK?. BUY IT AND HAVE NOT SENT ME AND NEVER HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO TRY, ONLY I HAVE HEARD AND I LIKED. THANKS FOR THIS VIDEO COMPARISON.
I have to say that the Fender sounded better on the fingering, but the Ken had a better pop and slap sound........Yamaha sounded too much like a cheap bass....just my opinion. I don't like a bass that strings ring out like the Yamaha bass did...makes it sounds like a Toy.
Much as I want to love the ken smith and was considering buying one, hearing them head to head has just confirmed that the jazz bass rules, and it will always rule!
The Smith's electronic sounds so soft, great...But I don't like it (personally), hoho...I hate 5 stringed Fender, so bad for the low B...The Yamaha is standard, good...
But why those 3 were not tuned in the same way? I heard, so different tuning each of them...
hello, this video ken smith is the best, but I think with new ropes in the Fender and yamaha will note 10, congratulations, very good set of bass guitar
the ken smith is more crisp on th the fingerstyle and the slap, the fender was great on the slap and the fingerstyle was good but not like the ken. the yamaha make you sound sloppy it definetely didn't do good on the fingerstyle.
When i bought my Ken smith i sold my fender and i only kept my schecter for sentimental reasons
well is you watch the video in HQ you will se the eq settings and they where all the same, so thas the point of the video, to compare the true sound, if i start mod the eq well they will all sound very diferent... Yamaha basses are great!!!!
@xxxthebassmanxxx there is no true sound.. every bass has own true sound. so if u want yamaha with fenderlike sound on slap, u have to tweak the equalizer.. and if u want fender with ken smith like sound on fingerstyle, u have to tweak the equalizer.. Yes, equalizer is not everything, and yes tweaking the equalizer can't make these bass sounds same one the other. because every bass has it's own character.. BUT, that's what we looking for. ur comparation between these basses not exactly correct..
Excellent example of tonal differences, but perhaps unfair to the Yamaha. Nathan East's Yamaha BBNE2 would be a much better comparison (if you owned one of course) to the high end Smith. Love the Fender AND the Smith btw.
Thanks for review on the 3 basses. But there's no way that yamaha can be compared to those high end bass guitars by American manufacturers. Try a faceoff between a Yamaha TRB 5PII or the 6PII (both Japanese made) and we'll see which bass wins. Its THE BEST bass around, heavy but very good.
Hi, you are right about the comment, but those are the basses that I own... And in my opinion there is no Yamaha that can be compared to a smith bass but they are expensive... IMO best!
I respect your opinion and , opinions differ. I like the playability of the yamaha with thier flat and fast neck's and will stick to it. By the way check out abe laboriel's solo on his TRB 5PII... cool.
I think that each bass has something special... The ken smith is one of the best all over the world... but if you are searching for something traditional the Fener Jazz Bass is better, because it has all that you need to hear... and Yamaha TRB if you like nice bright tones. Besides, is important to know the musical genre, smith is good with Gospel, but not well in rock. IMHO
The smith sounds great but it is what it is. There a quality about it that you can't get rid of if you tried. You either like it or you don't. Dual coils will do that, Smiths do it x10
The Fender part is what a good single coil bass should sound like.
For years I looked for one bass that could do both. It doesn't exist. I use two basses.
I don't care for the yamaha. It sounds muffled. Perhaps dead strings or cheap pickups.
preciosos bajos, todos con lo suyo, pero a mi parecer y creo que el de muchos, el smith es el más equilibrado en cuanto a sonido, versátil... saludos...
The Smith sounds great BUT I prefer the Jazz sound, the slap sounds more "traditional" and the Smith sounds a little "mid-range-y", but that's not a bad thing :-)
The smith has soapbars on it the model is BSR5MW but check my other videos I post one with a smith I used to own with Jazz pickups on it. check it out and give me your comments
I actually like the fender tone best of the three. Ken Smiths sound thin and generic to me. Yamaha is ok on tone - ok, kind of cold and basic. I have been buying, recording, owning just about every kind of bass. My favorite is a 85 rick 4003 for live and a 65 fender jazz for the studio with flat wounds.
Strange that you used the word "generic" for the smith. I can tell that you have never played one... I think fender basses are awsome, but to use a word like "generic" for a Ken Smith its a sing of ingnorance...
No, didn't mean for that to come off wrong. I was looking into getting a smith. your right haven't tried one in person. That's why I liked your video comparison. The sound of the smith to me in on the ultra treble side to me, almost guitarish from the videos I've seen. What is the neck like on the Smith compared to the other two? Do you have any other sound files which demonstate the tonal spectrum of the smith basses? Cheers
well Smith basses have a very special voice, and the neck its probably the most confortable I have played. The spectrum is so wide, you can make it sound in may diferent ways. but you know they will always cut in to the mix, they have an amazing response, and electronics are the most silence I have tried. This in the studio its very important. About the Bridge, tuners and other parts, are perfect!!! they are precise and you will always get perfect pitch. action is super low
If you want to compare between yamaha trb and kem smith. you should try yamaha trb6pii and compare with your ken smith. because you use the cheapest trb on the market and compare with couple thousands more expensive smith. it's different level. last time i tried yamaha trb6ii with ken smith almost a thousand dollar more expensive. but i end up with trb6ii for the sound and second one for the money. and i bought the trb6ii but right now this model dicontinued. and your trb i think is trb1006.
I have tried that bass and they sound good, but far from a smith bass. I just post this video so people can see the diference between the basses that I own, I dont like TRBs at all. For me Smith or fenders. Thats it. And you are right they are more expensive not everyone can afford one.
yeah i like fender sound but i don't like the model like everybody can have it. i don't know why they make same model for decades? yeah everybody have different taste for sound. even me my main bass is custom made 6 string single cut model with bartolini quad coil pickup. it has thick and dark sound that's what i like. my trb just for practice only he...he...hope next time fender will come out with 6 string single cut and i'm gonna order one.
