FFXII had a fantastic story. Had to be one of my favorite most recent ones... better than FFX, anyway.

The gameplay was really boring though... the license system was complete bullshit. Balthier and Doctor Cid were other good characters, by the way.

I think you have it backwards. FFXII story was AWFUL and generic, but the world and the gameplay are what made it great. It had 100+hrs of gameplay, and had so many extra hidden things to do.

But the main plotline was DULL.

Actually, you're right. The world was what made it a great FF, although I don't think the plot was as bad as you say. I suppose the plot sort of teetered off towards the end, but I liked the whole geopolitics aspect.

For me, it was the gameplay that was dull. It wasn't so much the actual mechanics as much as that damn license system, although the open world setting was nice. No random battles, at any rate. But I do agree that the extras did make it more enjoyable.

In my opinion it's ironic because the seemed to have reversed that in FFXIII. I love the game and it has a fantastic story, and the gameplay is good, but the world is far too linear. But i think the animation makes up for that because the game is beautiful :)

it was the reason it was so linear afterall. Imagine trying to load a full open world onto 1 disc (3 for 360's) with that kind of look. Ps3 would need at least 3 discs... 360 6 lol

Though I don't play Final Fantasy games for action, I play them for a good story, so FF12 was a huge disappointment for me

Both are great games. I can't speak for Spirit Tracks, although in general I heard it was pretty good.
