@spoutman I think they weren't expecting the humans to adapt their weapons to overcome the cordolaine signal plus the Sontarans have been fighting the Rutans, electric alien jellyfish for 50,000 years. I think their armour is adapted to protect against rutan stings and bioelectricity and not bullets. Maybe RTD is saying something about the Human aptitude for war. Dalek Sec appreciated it and the Time Lords described Humanity as the most warlike species in Mutters Spiral (Milky Way)

*sigh* There wasn't any problems with the guns, the Sontarans had a Cordalaine signal to expand the copper jacket of the bullets ant then, at the end, UNIT used silver-coated bullets.

My, my, my, now Im not much for being nity-picky, but since you brought it up, the bullets were rad-steel coated, not silver coated as you said. And I stand by my original statement. It doesnt if its the bullets fault, if you pull the trigger, and nothing happens, you gun is not working. Plain and simple.

They're actually 'rad-steel' bullets. In the classic series episode 'Battlefield', they also have anti-Dalek rounds which are armour-piercing Teflon coated, as well as explosives for Yetis, other armour-piercing rounds for robots, gold bullets for Cybermen (those who don't know, Cyberman in the classics were susceptible to gold) and silver bullets at the Doctor's suggestion, which came in handy against an inter-dimensional beast called 'the Destroyer'.
