The butterfly effect works even with words. You say something hateful to someone that effects them then they pass that hate along in one way or another. You make some very good points. I have subscribed to a certain amount of common decency in my videos. I intentionally avoid "inappropriate" language simply out of respect for potential viewers. I didn't think about the possibility of government intervention, but you are certainly correct in saying that it is inevitable, and the more the limits are pushed, the sooner and harder it will come.

One of the biggest misunderstandings in terms of censorship is just some folks dont understand the law. I would never own a video sharing site with the scapegoat corporate laws out there.I remember reading about a lawsuit about a woman hearing fat jokes at work.What pissed me off about the lawsuit was that the workers were reprimanded but because they werent fired, she continued to feel isolated. I posted this to Tom: It is NOT okay for people to behave in a manner which causes others pain and distress. A huge part of the issue, however, lies with the victims who give the bullies validation, credibility, and a solid "win" by posting angry responses, threatening legal action, etc. This reactionary behavior gives the trolls and haters what they want, satisfaction. They revel in the fact that they got someone's goat. Victims should ignore the behavior unconditionally first.
In a like manner, it is equally NOT okay to follow a legitimate comment, supporting either side, with "You have no right to say that because you've demonstrated the opposite in the past" or charging with hypocrisy. Also, personally attacking someone for having an opposing viewpoint is horribly bad form. Just my opinion. I enjoy entertainingly sarcastic comments that are only intended to be humorous, not genuinely hurtful and disagreeable. I've left & received my share of those, and we all understand that that's just a game—just going for laughs. But when someone tells me that I'm the first person he's ever "encountered with such a profound [mental] disability" (as someone did recently, not at all playfully), it DOES affect me physiologically, just as you were saying.

seriously, i am sick of people thinking freedom of speech, especially students, is about saying whatever you want, like obscenities. that is not what freedom of speech is for. and anyway, at this point, freedom of speech in america is almost just to placate the people because 'at least we're allowed say whatever you want.' yeah, they let you because nobody is listening and you have no power. i think we all have to emphasize LISTENING and THINKING more than freedom of talking.

JP here: I totally agree with you on the thicker skin argument - kudos on that. =D As for the community putting their foot down, however, I think that's going to break down sometimes. If we go with the "nobody's perfect" premise, then there'll be times when the community will fight amongst themselves; the ol' "my friends can take out your friends" situation pops up every now and then.
But if there's one hater, screwing up one individual, an influx of collective support will work. =D

There are already legislation pushing back at online bullying, etc. This legislation was inspired by sites like myspace/facebook. The adults who behave like children on here will be the next to find out.
If people just need to be mean, for mean's sake, there are professionals who can help them overcome their mental processing issues.

The butterfly effect works even with words. You say something hateful to someone that effects them then they pass that hate along in one way or another. Everything you do or say to someone else may have a vastly larger effect then you could ever imagine. Think about what you say, one hateful word could have a snowball effect building as it's pass and is added to from person to person.

You make some very good points. I have subscribed to a certain amount of common decency in my videos. I intentionally avoid "inappropriate" language simply out of respect for potential viewers. I didn't think about the possibility of government intervention, but you are certainly correct in saying that it is inevitable, and the more the limits are pushed, the sooner and harder it will come.

Excellent video! Personally, I no longer have a desire to vlog and I give you a lot of credit for continuing to keep going.
I've watched many people being stalked, harrassed and slung through the mud...why would I want to vlog? I enjoy watching videos but when I repeatedly become annoyed and upset watching other people being harrassed and hurt...it's time to back off.
I have an account at LV but I still have no desire to vlog. I'll focus more on my family and wish everyone here good luck.

i think the civil court system is a mess, i agree. but maybe we should be talking about that. a criminal, no, but according to the law, civilly responsible and therefore financially responsible according to the law and precedent (i'm not advocating, just stating fact). you do have the right to be critical and they, according to law, have the right to compenate them for damages to their rep. i didnt write the laws. youtube is a company that wants to avoid litigation. they have that right.

One of the biggest misunderstandings in terms of censorship is just some folks dont understand the law. I would never own a video sharing site with the scapegoat corporate laws out there.I remember reading about a lawsuit about a woman hearing fat jokes at work.What pissed me off about the lawsuit was that the workers were reprimanded but because they werent fired, she continued to feel isolated. I posted this to Tom: It is NOT okay for people to behave in a manner which causes others pain and distress. A huge part of the issue, however, lies with the victims who give the bullies validation, credibility, and a solid "win" by posting angry responses, threatening legal action, etc. This reactionary behavior gives the trolls and haters what they want, satisfaction. They revel in the fact that they got someone's goat. Victims should ignore the behavior unconditionally first.

Also, personally attacking someone for having an opposing viewpoint is horribly bad form. Just my opinion. Throughout our history there has been a place for sarcasm and satire and strong disagreement. Sometimes it is necessary to forge ideas. Have you read any of the personal accounts of the Continental Congresses and Constitutional Convention? Political correctness is far more dangerous than free speech.

i agree phil. that whyi limited very much to accussations of criminal behavior, leaking personal information and threats. i was pretty clear if you want to insult, i don't really care. like tom said, there is a difference between "fuck you" and "fuck you, i'm gonna find your family"
