Naginata seems intressting, I am myself a female kendoka and I like the koncept that the most part are women that trains naginata! But won't they get hurt on their feet?
I'm out of practice anymore, but I loved using this as a weapon. I mastered the bo, and found this to be fairly similar as far as footwork and being able to change stances and hand positions quickly. The overall techniques were different of course, but it made the conversion much easier.
No real reason or purpose to study Kendo or Naginata. Read the book of 5 rings it will give you much more insight on combat. The bad form of these practitioners is atrocious. Same with Kendo tournaments, the lack of technique in a linear movement is nothing like real combat. Modern Martial Art/Sports disgrace the honor of the Bushido. One's everyday stance should become his combat stance and vice versa. A true warrior must become one with his mind body & weapon every action must become instinct.
@Velorynias A reason to study kendo or naginata would be, just as all martial arts instill, disciplinary values. I mean, it's discouraged to take a martial art with the intention of using all of the techniques you study to inflict damage on anyone. It is instilled that conflicts should be avoided.
@Velorynias : There is a reason, the same as any other general martial art. No, it's not actually weapon training, just for those sports, but it does have its place. That said I would much rather learn Kenjutsu or Naginatajutsu.
god this looks like it would be amazing to learn..... i wonder if i could talk my sensei (i study ninjutsu) to take a day or two into showing us this.....
no. naginata was chosen as official "sport" class for girls long ago. This is due because samurai women prefered this weapon to defend theres home while mens where out at war.
That been said, naginata was use as much by men. Famous warrior favored the naginata. Saitō Musashibō Benkei is well know for his naginata use. (wikipedia q=benkei)
This looked like a (failed, because slow) attempt to nuki.
AFAIK, both shins are still valid targets. Since the naginataka on the left had his/her kissaki completely out of his/her center during the nuki-waza, the naginataka on the right could have made an ippon by properly hitting it and showing correct zanshin. I think the hit and the zanshin were a little too weak, but I'm not sure; I'm only san-kyu at the moment ;)
looks like fun!

Only injures we ever see (kinda rarely) are toenails getting ripped off.

Im a begginer at kendo...
But before I tried to do naginata too, but I choosed kendo because you have more "mobility" I guess... I forgot the word :D
But I think kendo has an advantage over naginata
PedroMM193 2 years ago
But naginata does have a larger range. Plus, it can be used as a staff or spear too.
But I guess it all depends on your own style. Some people will be better at using a sword than a naginata, and vice-versa.
darken27 2 years ago
I completely disagree. Neither has an advantage, and I do both.

You are doing both kendo and naginata? lucky you. may I ask in what country you live?
Aureliano5174 2 years ago
USA. If you live on the west coast you're pretty much set.

West Coast? Lucky you! You have Tanaka Myako Sensei there.
Actually my teacher is also from your area.

the ninjitsu naginata is very different from what you see here.
try and find an Atarasii Naginata dojo. it's quite rare, though
Aureliano5174 2 years ago
Sure, if you sensei can make up ninjutsu(lol) instructions, he surly can come up with some good looking naginata move for you.

sorry for stupid comment,
naginata isn't for women?
lookingfor89 2 years ago
It's for women and men as well. Naginata was mainly a battle-field weapon, during the XIV-XVI century in Japan. In Edo, it was more used by women.

I notice at :09 seconds that the person on the left steps back and the legs are moved as if to hide the front leg?
So the back leg is not a target right at that moment?

You mean you can score on the front foot?
I also notice that the traditional Kendo pants are tied up correct?
AlanMolstad 4 years ago
exactly :)
The area is between the foot and the knee.
In naginata most points are score in this way.
murlf 4 years ago
scored different than kendo?
AlanMolstad 4 years ago
we score Men - Do - Kote as the kendo
We add an additional part of armor (sune ate) and we can score on it also

Merci d'avoir posté ça, y'a pas assez de vidéos de naginata ><

are the naginata usually held with the dominant hand in reverse?
TacticusPrime 4 years ago
You lurn to practice both normal and reverse stance.
On competition you can surprise your partner in reverse stance.
Some times after a succession of assault you reverse stance. So you have to be in good mood with both stance.
