Hi Valentina, I admoire very much your art of playing and I am a classical music composer in Hong Kong and I have uploaded some piano music I composed that might worth listening to. please search mapochi: andretta predude & fantasia, tempest prelude and fugue, flame of darkness...etc
Your perfomrmance is great. Delicious and smooth. Go ahead and bring us mor Bach. My compliments for your technic and correct reading of the partita sheet music.
Hi! Always "So nice"Diana Krall song.So smooth. I really like the entire thing, but the fugue is terrific. How about the piano, does it have a history like Yours at home, that I read about in Chopin DVD.You think they would send it all the way to Arizona?Oh Well, wish full thinking. If I wish upon a Star?Nuts! The song fotonight is "PoPoPityfulMe"LOL? Song by Linda Ronstadt.I hope someone LOL at that."Always On Your Side"(Sheryl Crow in HawaiiNuts!)Hilary Hahn in Europe-hope She has fun!LvY'all Dan
she gets it. She really does. The use of the pedal is great IMO, sets a dramatic stage most others who let it resonate end up cutting it off too soon anyways and set a faster tempo than this song initially needs. Most of the 'youtube greats' need to relax, play with a feeling like she does, not simply mechanically, trying to remember everything at once. THis wan't meant for you to understand (yes you)
@victoriangirl83 It's not a fact at all that there should be no pedal. She uses it very well here, and the interpretation is impeccable. Gould has a great reputation for Bach, but he is not final word. Personally, I think this is a refreshing and thoughtful approach to this work

Hi! This is one of My favorites. I love the light slightly stacatto.Fantistic touch. Thanks! Always on Your side,Always in My heart and prayers. Love Dan
Have you ever done any c.p.e. bach? He's so interesting, and easy, though the potential for original interpretation is ripe. I think you could do it very well.
Everytime I hear this piece I see Glenn Gould wearing a trenchcoat and sitting infront of his old Chickering with a teacup on it...^^
I must say i like your interpretation :).
Every interpretation is unique so i can´t say, which one is the best but i think you did a great jop; even if I think nothing could beat the clanking sound of Goulds Chickering !
I notice that some of the dvd originals are also often displayed in 240. It is probably difficult to construct a business case in which you give away in full quality that which you also try to sell. I am happy with what I get. - similar to rag time song Gimme the Leavins.
I love Bach, and I would love to see you play Bach more often! Most the time i hear Bach played without any pedal, which may be correct, but i don't like it.
Just today i saw a nice Bösendorfer Imperial in the concert hall of the music school i visit twice every week, no, three times, for choir, piano lesson and operasinging, and directly I thought it would be nice to have you for a concert in our little conservatory.
Sadly I was not allowed to play that Bosi. Had to use Steinway. Bad Pedal :(
I really whish you had more time to play Bach, hopefully soon. Let me write you a suggestion: Goldberg Variations?!? Keeping my fingers crossed, I cant wait to hear your version!
I wonder how our school managed to get a bosendorfer O.O However, for an amateur pianist like me, the keys are heavy. need to build up strong fingers in order to play it :)
Bach kicks the collective asses of those composers who come after him any day!
Such pure music, unpretentious, no bravado, just pure harmony of the voices, exactly what you'd expect from a man who wrote for the glory of his God and for the refreshment of the souls of his listeners (as opposed to wacky show-offs like Liszt and co. whose music is not so easily appreciated by laypeople)
Valentina, more Bach please! :) You more than passed, that was simply wonderful!
@kb27787 Easy there.. Bach's musical godliness cannot be challenged, but if Lizst never existed the world would be missing something. And I think you're wrong about the appreciation from the layman. Noone appreciates classical music nowadays.
Nevertheless I must agree. Bach is a composer's composer.
Je me prends à rêver: Valentina Lisitsa jouant tout le clavier bien tempéré et les variations Goldberg... Mais je suis certain que cela viendra un jour, alors, je serai au paradis
Ms. Lisitsa, don't worry about never satisfied audiences: "Play this, play that, waa..." Just play of your soul, do what you love most without a care in the world, and I am sure there are going to be a lot and more of us who will still venture into your aura of soulful music, openly and honestly praising your work. Even more so, because you can catch just the right way of interpreting the moods and feelings in the pieces if you play what best suits you.
I'm no expert on this subject at all, but am I the only one who notices a striking similarity between this piece's introduction and the one in Beethoven's Pathetique sonata?
@Toungester Beethoven was a great admirer of the Leipzig genius... as Mozart and Chopin. Bach was the father of ALL western music, that's why he was the composer whose music is recorded over and over and over again. It's infinite, always changing and overwhelming, like the sea.
@ke7hbi barely pass, I've played this partita, the fuge in the first part is not very clear, buy it is OK. This was writen for chavicord, but if you play in a piano, you MUST, play with all the instruments resourses, other wise you should change instrument, the is so many people thinking that Bach has to be played horizontally, no dynamics, that is so stupid, if you want to play that way, play a clavicord no PIANO. Valentina you are not a Bach specialist, but you pass barely.
@Multieduardo1962 I just find it interesting that everyone thinks that just because your really good at something that you should be totally brilliant at every aspect of it. Valentina is an amazingly gifted pianist.... just because she doesnt usually play Bach..... or the way you think is right doesnt make her any less of a musician. Your comment "pass barely" is so snipe. Until you have managed an internationally acclaimed career you shouldnt be so eager to throw a chick under the bus.
Masterfully played. The precision with which you placed every single note is incredible. Bach's compositions demand precision and this piece certainly is no exception. In your performance, as with all of your performances, every note is exact and regulated.
Just lovely! I especially like that you allow listeners to focus on the music and not your self! I see many performers dancing off their seats extraneously wile playing. I simply think that it is a distraction to the music! You have a good balance of complementary movement.
I especially like this video because you are modest enough for my brothers to watch plus you are playing Bach!
wow!!! Your Bach touch is INCREDIBLE!! I LOVE it! I really wish you would play and record more Bach.......I understand though, your presenters feel there is more demand for Chopin and Liszt..........They don't appreciate the FOUNDATIONS of classical music, just current ratings! This Bach is SO inspiring! Thanks SO much for sharing! I just started playing as an adult a few years ago, and I too gravitated towards the romantics and am now wanting to play Bach more. My teacher is happy!
The more I listen this piece, the more I think is one of the best interpretations. It has the character, the contrapunto is excellent! Brava Valentina, molto brava!!!
And just when I thought you couldn't play anything else I've played, you played one of the only two bach's I've ever played....
You seem to enjoy playing the same things I do (though you play them orders of magnitude better than I do), and anything that I haven't played that you have, are things I would actually play myself....
Absolutely wonderful! Brilliant! What a fantastic control of dynamics, to say nothing of the crystal clear and perfect coordination of both hands. I think of myself as an O.K. non-classical/baroque pianist trying my hands occasionally on Bach. I already failed at playing Prelude 2 in C minor even only once in my life without any audible error. At least I think I am entitled to talk about it! :-) Just wonderful!!!! Thanks for posting.
Do you own this Bosendorfer? My favorite pianist owns one, Wibi Soerjadi. Have you heard of him? He's a Dutch masterpianist. Many people dislike his take on classical pieces, but his own transcriptions and compositions are superb. ;)
The rhythm should be dotted all time in the ouverture, it's a basic baroque performace rule, they didn't print double dotts or dotted rests. But wonderfully played!!!
All the jams you play on the piano are like top 40's for the 1700-1900's lol. Some epic stuff you play; how do you store all that information in your head? also how often do you practice and how long?
have you feel the way a russian woman feels the classical music? It really flows from her vains so natural, It is not enoth to show the talent. She feel it as it is and make you feel the same. As if she IS the music.
Hi, lovely recording. Your light pedaling, authentic, crisp and joyful playing are certainly perfect for Bach & Scarlatti. Please don't neglect Scarlatti =) Admittedly, you probably have 1000s of fans requesting you play every composer from A to Z, apologies to be 1001. Any Scarlatti you already know would be appreciated.
valentina do u remember the full piece after 1 year non-playing? i can remember homophone pieces of chopin beethoven mozart... but bach is really hard to remember coz of many many voices... (polifonic music)
It's always someones anniversary: Claude Debussy (1862), Richard Wagner (1813), Richard Strauss (1864). Why is that a reason to leave all other composers out?
u play beautifully. I love the Bosendorfer Imperial Grand 290, and I would love 2 hear u play (even though his 7th, 2nd movement is my favorite) Beethovan's sonata (moonlight) on that piano. keep playing.
Hello Valentina! I just sat watching this video with a big smile on my face, and thinking what a great successor to the late Tatiana Nicolaeva you'd make. Pay no heed to the nay-sayers who claim your playing is too mechanical sounding. The world of music would be boring in the extreme if all musicians conformed to some "norm" of interpretation, which would leave us, the listeners and buyers of recordings, left with only the choice of personality! Perish the thought!
I find that there's something simple & cleansing (for lack of a better word) when playing Bach. Hard to describe but when you play so much romantic era pieces, the Bach & Mozart are such a terrific change of pace. Wonder if VL feels this way....?
BTW I wonder if she'll ever go in the opposite direction and share her interpretations of impressionistic composers (Debussy, Ravel) with us. I'm sure that would be beautiful as well.
Hey, I thought you didn't play Bach! This is wonderful! Not Tureck or Argerich perfect but very good nonetheless. I KNEW you'd be good at it. And your choices of tempi for each part are spot on :-) Keep 'em coming. Bach is not just "das meer", it's a goddamn universe.
I love your perfect, ,extraordinary, swiss watch timing. This is Bach. Only what I would like to hear in addition is little bit of Angela Hewitt's baroque atmosphere, Combined with your perfect tempo and precision this would be a heaven but even without this is pure pleasure. Thanks a lot for posting it.
Wow Valentina Im impressed! So beautiful interpretation, I love it! yo should play more Bach, I want you to Play more Bach!, it was so beautiful. I love this partita, it means a lot for me, and your interpretation is amazing, please play and record more Bach!
Bravoooo! So beautifully played... I have been watching your other videos and I feel so greatful for that... Your technique is perfect, and most of all the sensitivity that you transmit is speechless... Bravo again!
It took me so long to even appreciate Bach because of such prominent figures like Chopin, Liszt, Paganini, Sarasate, Brahms, Sibelius, Tchaikovsky (ect . . .)... now that I appreciate Bach, I hope to begin to understand this enormous giant of a musician. I love his D minor chacconne for violin solo... absolutely the apotheosis of violin. This interpretation is absolutely genius!
:-) How old is this recording? I like it, but in my opinion, it's pretty obvious, that you do not play so much Bach... I would never ever play it as well as you, but still... :-) I prefere you on romantic composers...
@luisdelbar it's just maybe that i love Martha's interpretation, which is just other than this, i don't wanna say this interpretation is bad and i'm sorry if it sounded like this, it's just my personal opinion... because an opinion about an interpretation is a subjectiv thing...
@davidnovotnypiano Well just I said this is a very good interpretation, but you shouldn't compare... because of course Martha Argerich's interpretation is a Great and Amazing interpretation and I really love it tooo. Valentina's level is different but anyway is very good, in my subjective opinion of course... =)
@luisdelbar greetings from czech republic as well :-) you're right, i just prefere valentina on other compositions, that's all :-) i just miss martha's energy of the final part here, but it's just my deformation by knowing another version better and for longer time... anyway, lisitsa is a better player than am I, so I should be quiet :-) no, she is great as well :-)
@babaz2 could I suggest an answer.... Chopin has a lot of heavy chords and this partita does not have heavy chords throughout most of it but there are sometimes a whole series of horizontal span-changes for a single hand in a single bar. The skill of this piece also lies in the torso being able to support each arm rotating a different way at a different phase of rotation always....
Magical from first note to last. Thank you for an asolutely beautiful performance. I will snatch up every bit of Bach that you release. I listen always to Schiff, Hewitt and Perahia in these pieces, and happily -- but you give the music an insouciance and drive that is all your own. I also love your willingness to give the left hand a firm voice in so many passages -- an equal say in the conversation, so to speak. Thanks again.
If I get another chance - yes , I will try opneing with double dots. The problem is I cannot make presenters agree to have Bach on a program. I will keep trying :-)
@ValentinaLisitsa Hello Valentina and thank you for your great videos!! For your words, I guess that the presenters think that Bach is somewhat... "not commercial"? "Out fo fashion"? Mainstream pop do a hard work on impoverishing (musically) the masses, so do you think Bach is too... er... serious, for them?? I thought that the ol' Leipzig grumpy was a goldmine for presenters... greetings from Barcelona!
@TheBarbaciano Bach is always a best-seller. The problem is usual prejustice and stereotypes coming into play.
If a presenter decides on hiring me - for example- he or she will immeditely think of something virtuoso and flashy. Or at least complete Chopin Etudes. It is very hard to fight. But not impossible :-) I will work on it !
@ValentinaLisitsa If anyone in this days can give Bach a shining, brilliant performance, it should be you. Let us, your friends help you and try the same as suggested to Deutsche Grammophon: 1 March 2011 I think the Netherlands love you, Amsterdam should be the place ;-)
I have greatly enjoyed your compelling playing of the romantic repertoire and now I'm equally impressed with your Bach. You bring superb clarity to the textures and voicing, every note speaks.
Please come to london and a Queen Elizabeth recital!.

And another little remark: You don't need to hurry Nobody runs behind you, tryingto catch you ;-) even in the fast parts of the piece
(also many other professional pianists seem that they have to hurry too often, when playing music about before 1800)

"Glenn Gould is OK . He didn' t have a Boesendorfer though, just a Yamaha :-)"
Fairly certain Gould never had a Yamaha. And calling Gould 'OK' is a bit harsh ;)

Hi Valentina!
Do you own this Bosendorfer? My favorite pianist owns one, Wibi Soerjadi. Have you heard of him? He's a Dutch masterpianist. Many people dislike his take on classical pieces, but his own transcriptions and compositions are superb. ;)

I love this piece, it's one of my favorites. Could you please play Bach's Goldberg Variations ? I would love to hear your interpretation

The rhythm should be dotted all time in the ouverture, it's a basic baroque performace rule, they didn't print double dotts or dotted rests. But wonderfully played!!!

All the jams you play on the piano are like top 40's for the 1700-1900's lol. Some epic stuff you play; also how often do you practice and how long?

have you feel the way a russian woman feels the classical music? It really flows from her vains so natural, It is not enoth to show the talent. She feel it as it is and make you feel the same. As if she IS the music.
I love Valentina Lisitsa.

I'm not sure if Bach would be more thrilled about the quality of the instrument or the performer.

It's always someones anniversary: Claude Debussy (1862), Richard Wagner (1813), Richard Strauss (1864). Why is that a reason to leave all other composers out?

You have an incredible gift for making all the parts sing to one another in such a way as to make the listener feel a part of the conversation.

Not bad, but I think you're better with the Romantics, bit too metronomical for my liking, I prefer someone like Schiff for Baroque

@luisdelbar it's just maybe that i love Martha's interpretation, which is just other than this, i don't wanna say this interpretation is bad and i'm sorry if it sounded like this, it's just my personal opinion... because an opinion about an interpretation is a subjectiv thing...
davidnovotnypiano 1 year ago
@davidnovotnypiano Well just I said this is a very good interpretation, but you shouldn't compare... because of course Martha Argerich's interpretation is a Great and Amazing interpretation and I really love it tooo. Valentina's level is different but anyway is very good, in my subjective opinion of course... =)
Greetings from México =)!!!

Maybe the Bach/Busoni Toccatta and Fugue (or the Bach-Tausig version) on the Bosendorfer might fit some programs requirements.

Play Bach, is it for you harder than playing Chopin?
babaz2 1 year ago
@babaz2 could I suggest an answer.... Chopin has a lot of heavy chords and this partita does not have heavy chords throughout most of it but there are sometimes a whole series of horizontal span-changes for a single hand in a single bar. The skill of this piece also lies in the torso being able to support each arm rotating a different way at a different phase of rotation always....

I don't understand Bach after watching the whole video I find Bach awkward some how :P Chopin or Liszt are more easy to understand in my eyes. :-)

Valentina, do you enjoy the Bosendorfer Imperial? Is that your favorite piano?
Findecan 1 year ago
@mallefries
If I get another chance - yes , I will try opneing with double dots. The problem is I cannot make presenters agree to have Bach on a program. I will keep trying :-)
ValentinaLisitsa 1 year ago 6
@ValentinaLisitsa Hello Valentina and thank you for your great videos!! For your words, I guess that the presenters think that Bach is somewhat... "not commercial"? "Out fo fashion"? Mainstream pop do a hard work on impoverishing (musically) the masses, so do you think Bach is too... er... serious, for them?? I thought that the ol' Leipzig grumpy was a goldmine for presenters... greetings from Barcelona!
TheBarbaciano 1 year ago

@ValentinaLisitsa Dear Valentina
I have greatly enjoyed your compelling playing of the romantic repertoire and now I'm equally impressed with your Bach. You bring superb clarity to the textures and voicing, every note speaks.
Please come to london and a Queen Elizabeth recital!.
