  • Hello Maryangel, thanks a lot!, I just moved to Zurich (Bulach) with my wife, and we are trying to get used to the life here. I really would love to get along with people here and have a question: I speak Spanish, English, Portuguese, Japanese, and some Italian. Now I'm looking forward to learn Swiss German! But my question is: do you think that I should use more Italian than English while I'm not able to use Swiss German? I don't want to offend people and make sure they understand me. Thanks!

  • @sebastian2508 hey sebi (that's what we call "sebastians" over here :D)

first off, welcome to our beautiful city, i really hope you'll get used to it quickly :)

definitely speak english. in the swiss german part of switzerland, only italians and those who have an affinity for italy or the language speak italian whereas almost everybody speaks english, especially the younger generation. so yes, definitely english until you learn german :)

  • Jo Gruezi - min Schwyzzrdüütsch isch noch nitze chut, chonscht du mir sogit, wann isch des düütsch "...ung" om Wortänd chäge dess "..ig" äsatzet?? Chood däss immer odrr hätts do a bschtimmt Rägäli?

  • @Maryangel24

Merci - das hiescht uff a Vokal wärds zäm "ig", sunscht nit?

isch chold schwarig zim lärned, walls ihr hochdüütsch schrieft obrr duusnt Dialekt chobt.

Isch do a gmiensamm "Hochschwizzrisch" wo jädrr virstoot? Drr Züri-Dialekt odrr sou?

  • @HesseJamez nei, aso wenns ug -IGUNG ended unds en konsonant vorem -I het, denn endeds mit "ung", aber wenns uf -IGUNG ended und es hät es vokal vorem -I, denn wirds z -ig. i allnä andere fäll wird s -ung zu -ig. :)

  • Hello Maryangel. Thanks for the tips in your video. I am going to Zuerich next week. I can speak and understand High German. Will people understand me if I speak High German? Will it offend people?

  • @rajubabuno1 heya there :) you have no reason to worry, it will not offend us. and people will understand you perfectly. almost all of us can speak high german. have fun in zurich! :)

  • du bist nett

  • @LORDLHUS ahahaha, cheers :D if i wasn't scared of internet predators kidnapping me and doing other nasty stuff to me, i might even consider it ;)

how long you been in in biel for?

  • @Maryangel24 haha yeah i dont blame you.... i have been here for about a year now, well in Safnern its near to biel but i am trying to learn swiss german the bern dialect and it is going pretty good lol

  • @LORDLHUS haha pss, don't learn the bernese dialect, züridütsch is SO much better ;) that's just my unbiased opinion ofc, hahaha.

  • nice video,,,thanks

  • @Yarphel1 thank you!! :)

  • hey, I love your vids!!!!

  • @tinktaful aww, thank you very much :)

  • thank you very much that was reallyyy helpful

  • @KurdistanKuwait aww, thanks, i'm glad :)

  • hallo! so i was wondering if you could make a video about things around the city? Things like "where is this?" or "How do you get here". and directions perhaps? Also, how would you say "thank you for showing me around. And thanks for meeting with me? Thanks sooo much. your videos are amazing :D

  • @monalisagrl heya :) ofc i could! i've been sick for over a week now, which is why i had to delay my planned videos, but i'll defs make one :) thank YOU for your kind words! :)

  • i would just like to take a min, and say, thank you for this video. its very nice, and Uber easy on the eyes :)

  • yes! awesome, this is what I neeeed! do you think I need to learn high German also to survive here in Switzerland? I'm afraid of mixing things up and getting confused.

    Thanks, du bish ein Engel!

  • @lethologic nope, you could even survive with english. but you could also just speak either h.german or s.german :) whatever's easiest for you! (i'd recommend s.german, it's quite the awesome language [completely unbiased here :P]).

haha jöö, bitte gärngscheh und dankä :D

  • zupf dini augebraue bebii

  • @srbijovolimte1 mini augebraue SIND zupft. sorry wenni nid wienes obertussi mit ufzeichnete braue wot usgseh. usserdem bechummi ständig kompliment für mini augebraue, wems nid passt sött wegluege ;)

  • I have to admit, that even though I speak French and German fluently, Swiss German (any variant) leaves me absolutely perplexed. This video was very helpful. Danke/Grutzie fuer dein Video! Du kannst gut englisch!

  • @bradcasali i saw on your profile that you're from the USA, quite impressive that you should speak french and german. good on you :) but yeh, swiss german is a bit different :D glad this was helpful, thanks for the very kind comment :) dankeschön und tschüss :D

  • Have you ever thought to become a teacher?I think you have gift for it.

  • @Glasgowman100 aww, thank you very much! yes, actually, i'd love to become a language teacher. i was thinking of teaching english students spanish or german at some point :) we will see how that goes. again. thanks heaps for the compliment!

  • Hello Mary,

Are planning to do more videos in close future?Could you please put subtitles in your video.I think it would be very interesting to know how to spell some words and expressions in Swiss german cause I assuse the actual spelling of some words can be different compare to high german. If it is hard don't worry just leave it as it is.:) thanx once again

  • @Glasgowman100 heya there :) actually, you will find ALL the things i say and even more info in the description box of all my videos :) i sometimes even transcribe the words for those who know the phonetic signs to make it even easier for you guys to pronounce it.

and yes, there will be a new video soon, one with some more verb conjugation and tense etc. :) cheers and sorry i don't make videos that regularly.

  • Hello,Wie geht es Ihnen?

Thank you Maryangel for your explanation it was very kind of you.I do really want to learn to speak German.I just started and my level can not be concidered as good I'm still beginner.Yes probably I will come to visit Schweiz but don't know when cause my life keeps me busy. Is it very expensive country to live in terms of life cost?Thank you once again for your good video.Your explanation was great.:) Danke

  • @Glasgowman100 *dir instead of ihnen, since i'm a "youngster" :P you'd say hi to me in a less formal way :)

mir geht es gut, danke! :D und selbst?

no worries, whenever you have a question feel free to ask :) just in case you haven't seen it, i have a playlist with about 8 swiss german videos, in case you want to learn some more things :)

hmm yes, unfortunately, switzerland IS very expensive :/ 'nen schönen tag wünsch ich dir :) mary

  • If I go to Switzerland and start talking in general german, does it mean that nobody wlll be able to understand me? Is actually english spoken in Switzerland or there can be a problem? Could anybody who really knows the difference explain me what's all about? Cheers

PS To be honest I find it hard to repeat some words in Swiss German.

  • @Glasgowman100 no worries, everybody from the german part of switzerland knows high german, we learn it at school :) most of the french speaking swiss people also speak a bit german. almost everyone speaks english, especially in the cities, because we have to learn it at school. are you coming to switzerland any time soon? :)

  • @Nibiru128 grüezi! :D

awesome, did you like it? davos is quite beautiful :)

aww, well, i'm glad you like us, haha :D

  • Lol you are so cute and swiss. :D

  • @oceangust haha thank you :D

  • Great! This explained alot of the expressions I heard on my visit to Berne last month, I heard those often but didn't ever ask. For me it's easier to understand and repeat the word when I have seen it written. Now I hopefully remember merci vielmal, en guetä and grüezi mitenand (I need to see your other videos if there is an example how bernese people say grüezi, since it's different of zürichs. It also seems that men use the throat sound also in the end of the word??). Thanks alot!

  • @Rejakkis heya there :) yes, bernese is quite different from zurich swiss-german. unfortunately, i only make videos in my own dialect, but i could include the grüezi (grüessäch in bernese) in my next video. also, my best friend is bernese, i could ask her to do it. however, as i said, my own vids are all in zurich-siwss-german. sorry :/ hmm, i'm not sure if men use gluttoral sounds more frequently than women, i think it depends on the dialect? i'll pay attention to it and let you know :)

  • Wow im glad Ive found these videos, reading it in books it useless i have no ideas how to actual say it! So yeah same as what MrNagvakar said realy, its hard to hear what your sayins its a bit too fast haha. Thanks, Im visiting Zurich and Interlaken 8th October :D

  • @ricklowe91 heya there, i'm so sorry, i didn't realise i was talking too fast, as i told mrnagvekar already, i'll make sure to talk more slowly in my future vids. :)

also, that''s awesome! how long will you be staying in zurich? (my beautiful city :D) and if you have any questions as to switzerland or swiss german let me know :)

  • @Maryangel24 Thanks :) Im getting the train from Zurich airport to Interlaken staying there 2 nites then are last nite in Zurich becuase are flite is a 7am the next day :l You dont by any chance know how much the train from Zurich to the airport is do you? Were getting a return from airport to interlaken for £42 thats all i could find out. Ha I hope it is beautiful! one more thing, how can u understand slang and abbreviations e.g. alrite, cya etc? thanks!

  • @ricklowe91 yep, i do. main station zurich to the airport zurich costs 6.20 francs for one person (age 16+). £42 for one person to go from zurich to interlaken and back? you sure?

do you mean how i understand english slang or how you can understand german slang? cheers :)

  • @Maryangel24 Oo thanks that seems reasonable, what do you mean am i sure? is the price i said too high or too low? I checked the swiss trains website thats what i heard, and on a lot of forums too. And yeah, how do you understand english slang ive never understood how forgeiners understands accents. Ta :)

  • @ricklowe91 well, first i need to know if it's for one person? idk, i guess it is the normal price, i couldn't find it anywhere online, i think i'll ask at the station tomorrow and let you know. i know there are cheaper tickets, but those are really hard to get 30 francs for whole switzerland for a whole day. not sure where you can get those tho, i'll ask around.

well, i've been studying english for a couple of years now and idk.. i read heaps of books, i watch yt videos, i watch english...

  • @Maryangel24 movies etc. i guess after a while you just start acquiring the language, you get a feeling for certain sayings and idiomatic discourse :)

  • @Maryangel24 Sorry for late reply! Wow thanks thats would be very kind of you! Yeah, its £42 per person we found, that would be good, the whole day one, becuase I think the train goes through Bern, so maybe we could stop there for a few hours, and do you know if the train from the airport to interlaken goes through Zurich? Thank :)

  • u r videos r really very helpful for me .. but i wud appreciate if u cud be a bit slow in pronouncing the Deutsch part.... Merci vilmal

  • @MrNagvekar thank you very much. and of course, thank you for letting me know, i'll talk more slowly during the german bit in my next video. bitteschön :D

  • You're pretty! :)

  • @VictoriaLoveJoy aww why thank you very much :))

  • hey how to you say do you have any weed??

  • @silvershrpie101 haha you say "häsch gras?"

  • @silvershrpie101 hesch ä chli weed. ;)

  • @Maryangel24

    jaaa

Hammer, was?

  • @JimboniusIV haha google translator? or actual german you learnt? :D

    definitiv hammer ;)

  • jo abr glich du gsehs sexy us..;) und ja i cha dir latinish bi bringe..;)

  • @supraboyit danke. :D i ha mis latinstudium erfolgrich abgschlosse, danke trotzdem ;)

  • figgsh..?

  • @simonadomazetoska no worries :) and i totally agree with you, it's much easier to learn a language when someone actually says the words and phrases than trying to learn them by reading them. :)

  • @simonadomazetoska actually, if you check my channel and click on the playlist underneath the uploaded videos, you'll see that i have about 6 swiss german videos, in which i've mentioned those phrases :)) i'm glad you felt it was helpful, thank you very much!! :) xxx

  • WOW I think that is so nice of you to make a video like that. I don't think that i can remember how to say all those words so if i get a chance to go there one day i will o over gto your house so we can go out together and you can do the talking for me!! lol. =)

  • @kiana1sickchick aww thank you very much :) yeh, some people requested swiss german videos, so i made a few and am defo gonna make some more.

hahaha, no worries, if you ever come to zurich, let me know, i'd love to be a guide AND interpreter. :D

  • bisch du zürcherin? finges super, das video! :D

  • @AniluFilms hey :D jaaa bini! merci viel mal, haha :D vo wo bischn du? :)

  • @Maryangel24 miir sii vo bäärn. :)

  • @AniluFilms has agnoh ka wegem "finGes" anstatt "findes" haha :) cool.

  • Hopp Schwiiz! I find your videos very helpful! Thank you! =]

  • @HWVISP89 ueee hopp schwiiiz!!! :D thank you very much! and you're welcome :P

i noticed you've fav'd many vids about switzerland, what's your connection to this country? :)

  • @Maryangel24 My best friend is from Switzerland and I love everything about the country! =]

  • @HWVISP89 aww that is awesome! :D say hi to your friend from me, haha.

  • CHUCHICHÄSCHTLI

  • LOL THAT SITE "Did you learn that they speak German in Switzerland? That's a common misconception! In Switzerland they speak Swiss German" Hahahaaaaa.

  • @kunstinflammen hahaha well, but it's TRUE!!! :D

    CHäSCHüECHLI!

  • lol Merci vielmal!! That's adding French omg. And Tschau = Ciao, Italienisch right? XD Omg i never say anything before eating lolololol it makes it seem so official, like Japanese people always saying "itadakimasu!" I'm like "Why are they saying that D:" but then I'm very rude LOL.

  • @kunstinflammen haha yes, given that the three "official" languages of switz are italian, french and german (well actually it's 4, rhaeto-romanic, but god knows no one speaks that :P) it's no wonder you'd find french or italian words in the swiss german one :)

and yes, you defo have to say it, exactly like itadakimasu in japan :D

  • SWISS GERMAN IS AN AWFUL LANGUAGE AAAAAAAH

I live in swiss too but fortunately i speak french :P

  • @Yas2921 noooon, pourquoi est-ce que tu dis ça? :D j'adore toutes les langues!

but i know a lot of people who hate swiss german, haha. oh well :) where are you from, what canton? :)

  • @Maryangel24 I'm from Geneva :)

I had to learn German and i hated it, and swiss german is worst so...

but it's nice to see a swiss on youtube, i've never seen before

  • @Yas2921 aww geneva is nice!

haha, i guess it's hard to learn when you didn't grow up with it.

well equally, nice to see other swiss people on here :) although thanks to my swiss german videos i've found quite a few swiss people on here!

  • Thanks a lot! That really helps!!!

  • Thanks alot!

  • @niconestra bitteschön! :D

  • @niconestra bitteschön! :) i'm glad i could help a bit.

  • Gömmer? Poschte

    bring your Natel

    you souhund Nuttesohn

  • @daniel22x DAN!!!!!!!!! ahahahahahhaa that is NOT something you should say. i mean gömmer go poste, bring dis natel - fine. "du sauhund n*****" - no! not nice. lol

  • Comment removed

  • I'm still waiting for the swear words video ;)

  • @pixonu ahaha, i completely forgot about that. one swear words video coming up for you!

  • Tis a pretty language! :3

  • @MrNeeNaw why thank you kind sir :D

  • I don't understand but in no way was this boring, love it

  • @YouOriginal aww thank you very very much :) i could understand if ppl who are not interested in languages would get bored by this. same if someone forced me to watch a video about car engines. xD

  • sounds like 'gracias" :) all language is related

  • @wickedinsight what exactly sounds like gracias? :) it's true, german (and therefore swiss german) had its share from latin and we all know all the roman languages such as italian, french, spanish etc. developed from the latin language :)

  • @wickedinsight ooooh no i got what you meant "grüezi" sounds like gracias. that's a coincidence tho, because grüezi developed from "grüess dich" or german: grüsse dich! which means as much as "greet you!" (grüssen - greet) - which has its origins in the westgerman - "grotjan", which meant 'to make someone talk.', whereas gracias means thanks and has its origins in the latin language (gratia -> gratitude etc) :)

  • @Maryangel24 wow you really do know your language, thats great, so i was way off lol, well gracias for the explanation lol :P

  • @wickedinsight aww, haha, you were right tho when you said they were connected, since they all have some latin roots. and i only know a few things because i studied latin in HS. i wish i knew more, haha :)

  • @Maryangel24 ya i wish i had the ability to learn languages as fast as i drive my car to the supermarket for some ice cream, but ya i know 4 langs so thats enough for me hehe

  • @wickedinsight hahahahahaha!!! nice analogy xD

4 languages is awesome!! what languages do you speak? :) i guess spanish and english are two of them :P?

  • @Maryangel24 well spanish i learned in school so i can speak and understand just enough, nothing to brag about lol armenian and english are my languages of choice, and i know a little french and iranian, o ya a little bit of sign language lol

    wish i knew more

  • @wickedinsight armenian and iranian, that is sooo cool!!! i wish i knew a language like that! :) how do i have to imagine that language, is it similar to another language? like arabic maybe? or indian? idk ^^

  • @Maryangel24 well iranian is pretty close to arabic and armenian is somewhat close to russian dialect, harsh sounding verbiage, but ill take english any time of the day, your english is pretty good, do they teach english as a second language in your schools ?

  • @wickedinsight oooh coool!! but it's actually awesome that you know languages like those :)!

thank you very much! well no they introduced a new school law, where children have to learn english starting 1st grade. i didn't have it until 7th or 8th grade. our second language is actually german. and our third french. and our 4th is english. :)

  • yay another video :D.

malsifismal for this great video, very good and interesting as always.

chaow (id say see you later but no idea how to write that, might just kill your language :/ )!!!!!

    :) <3

oh yeah and you look really good in that green shirt.

  • @noxid915 haha for the spelling you can check the underbar/sidebar/information boy/dooblydoo or whatever it is called nowadays. i always put all the words and phrases down there. so see ya later = bis spöter ;)

why thank you very much! i bought it in the male section of the store XD i love guys' clothes, hahaha. <33

  • im not learning it but its very interesting hearing u speak the language...i remember chris trying to get u to talk on stickam and ud alway be so shy lol

    :D

  • @Beanieboy182 ahaha yeeh, because back then my english was so much worse and i was so ashamed to talk infront of you native speakers :D but as you can see, i don't have those issues anymore xD <33 oi, we should have one of those chats again like in the old times!!

  • @Beanieboy182 shes reserved im guessing, as she sed most people from where she is from are reserved.

  • @noxid915 haha actually i'm not, because i am originally serbian :P i love walking up to new people and talking to them. i just felt ashamed cause my english was real bad at that time :D <3

  • @noxid915 thats true she did say it :) But then she replied to me saying it was because she wasn't so fluent in england back then but now look at her go!

  • What is Swiss German for excellent and informative video? :)

  • @iggy35 aaaaww!! :D tee hee. i always feel like these videos suck, although i do hope i can help people.

and it would be "supr und lehrriichs video" xD <3

  • @Maryangel24 You do a perfect job with all your videos!

    supr und lehrriichs video *like*

  • @iggy35 aww, why thank you so much!!! that means a lot.

    DANKÄSCHÖN :D <3
