Question for the Dev's: Will all the ships is ST: E have full damage models? Like if I ram another ship will the part of the ship i rammed not be there anymore ;)
It would look much better if the explosion actually sticks to the ship, instead of stopping in free space as the model moves. Its nice, but I hope this game is not the same as BC, as when it comes to ship fighting, all the enemy ship ever targes is the Warp Core.
@AstroTrain100 Unfortunitally I am not on the team but I have made some 2d games before. I can say though that although they have ships that fly around and some nice warp effects the finished and smoothed out product WILL take at least a year expect it sometime 2012 maybe later, If they worked on this fulltime and
@IIIIandrew You say that with such confidence but it's hard to figure out how much they have done for all we know these video's could have been made 2 or 3 years ago.
Regardless though can't really complain about a release date when the game will be free and they won't be getting paid to do this. It's hard not to get impatient watching the awesome video's.
Oh great Captain James T. Kirk! You finally revived thyself(doctor, heal thyself) from the dead and are now making a game to rule them all(why do I need to make references to all movies I watched and liked???/?)
Speaking of explosions, is Excalibur going to get directional explosions? By that I mean explosions that are only rendered away from the surface they're from. I noticed that some of the explosions in the video were rendered right through to the other side of the hull and this was always something that bugged me about traditionally rendered games. I'll still get the game either way cause it looks awesome, but I'm just wondering. Anyway, great work so far.
Nice lighting and effects there. Great that your doing such a nice project. Never got Bridge Commander, but with there was a current or updated version of it. I'd love to see physics and detail in a game in space. Such as real time damage to parts.
@mharbaugh I don't want to sound nitpicky, but trailing explosions in space isn't exactly great physics. Explosions only trail on Earth because of the atmosphere. Throw a balloon from a moving car and the air outside will stop it, but any explosion in space will stay at the same velocity as whatever exploded. You're right that explosions shouldn't be tied to the hull though. A ship turning or accelerating isn't going to pull explosions with it. I never watched Star Trek for great physics though.
I don't know if have planed for this but it would be really good if there was an option to fire weapons manually and aim manually, and also the ability to use targeting systems to guess where the enemy ship will move and fire to the intercept point so that there is less chance of missing........
can't believe that it came down to fans to make the best ST GAME EVER!!! looks VERY promising, as it did from the start.... I just hope that the voice acting is done well, and if it's possible, by some actors from ST itself... but as far as the physics/lighting/graphics it looks AWESOME.. and that's putting it mildly! I have been playing and making minor adjustments to Bridge commander, and even those little adjustments can be a pain, good to see that you are making a game that is mod friendly
Absolutely incredible work. Also, the connector between the buzzard collector and the nacelle looks stunning. A minor, and very often over looked detail! And amazing how well this thing performs... What are your system specs?
Excellent work guys! It's amazing (yet kinda pathetic) that it's fans working on a non-profit game who are working on the space sim Trek fans have wanted for years and not the "official" developers. Star Trek Online is cool and so is Legacy but this promises to be much, much better.
Even now, this looks infinitely better than space-sim I've ever seen, top job chaps! Had to let it buffer for half an hour in 720p mode, but damn near blew my mind :D
Awesome. In the final version, will hull damage be visible on the model? Similar to bridge commander where 'chunks' of your ship would sometimes be ripped off?
@pandapop999 Absolutely! We have lots to finish, replace and add to what you are seeing here so just take this video as a demo of the weapon lighting.
will there be souns in the game?

My favorite part is how the explosions are not tied to the hull - the ship continues to move forward, and the explosion trails behind. Great physics!

It'd be nice, later on, seeing the hull RIPPED apart, pieces that come off, if another ship will crash into it, or something like that :)
