Use a real copper penny next time and see what the color will be. They are real copper from 1980 and below. Anything above 1980 is copper plated nickel and aluminum. Just like the 1964 quarters and below are silver.

dude you arnt turning the pennies to gold you are just doing electroplating and putting a thin new layer of metal (hense the silver) and then changed the color of the layer to a gold color (you also made it harder). I have gold and silver (it used to be silver but the layer of metal came off) pennies on the necklace im wearing right now. Its a cool abd fun science experement though.

I found a far more effective and timely technique which produces the same results. First, go to a hardware store and pick up a can of gold paint. Second, place the penny on some newspaper. Finally, spray the paint on the penny, and there you go, you have a real gold penny. I prefer to paint my pennies red, and I call them "rose pennies." My logic is that roses are red, and my penny is now red, so it must be a rose penny.

Alchemy has three major parts, Analyzing (Know what elements and such) Deconstructing, and reconstructing. There is no magic, because you can only use the materials present. A Philosophers Stone is what you could consider magic...

I haven't taken any chemistry, but I have worked a bit in jewelry making and I am guessing the penny is coated by the filings becasue the copper causes an electric charge in the acid which in turn is disolving the filings enough to transfer filing metal to the penny. I don't know what the rapid cooling is about, but I am sure the subsequent heating under a flame is the oxidation that causes the gold color. I would really like to know what actually happens though.

There is no such thing as "real alchemy". There are a bunch of really stupid books, morons, and websites made by science class dropouts who claim that alchemy is actually some new age herbal nonsense, but guess what.. It's bullshit. Stay in school kids, you won't make a fool of yourself by taking alchemy seriously.
