In 2008, a similar show by the name of Estate of Panic. The show was hosted by Steve Valentine, and involved seven contestants going to various rooms in a manor. If a contestant got greedy, forgot the number of contestants in the room, or if they wanted out the instant they went in, it would be likely they would be eliminated.

@lovesnooker2010 actually, the crystal maze was based on the format of fort boyard, which was originally a french tv show. when british producers wanted to do a version of fort boyard, the french fort where the original was filmed was not avaiable for filming, so they sat down and designed the crystal maze based on the fort boyard format. after it became clear the channel 4 wasn't going to do any more series of the crystal maze, the french fort was available, and the british fort boyard began

I was going to say just 'brilliant' which it is. The presenter is great and totally original. Richard O'Brian is really intelligent and understands how to encourage the team players without stealing their success. My special point is: there seems to a be a big number of cameras catching all angles and all the important moments. It's very well worked out.

@pythagorangle -- Actually the show was filmed with only two cameras, and in short bursts for the camera to be repositioned inside the game rooms. Sequences were frequently re-shot for "better television". It took about a day or two to complete one episode.

Thank you very much for the clarification. The production team were very smart. I can comprehend how cutting could be achieved and I can understand what would be required but the resultant material is very well designed, edited and produced. The camera work and lighting is uniform and accurate and the sets and storyboard seem to have been careful thoought out. iT LOOKS SO EASY!

@Ceremare -- Yes, you're right. I never would have guessed watching back then, or even recently, that the show was produced like Survivor; that is, manufactured for our viewing entertainment. It takes away a little of the magic for me, but it's still a great show.

@Isarru69067--- You mean in any particular episode? I'm afraid not. Over the course of the six series there were several teams which had three lock in's, which on one or two occasions resulted in only two players remaining for a while- as another had been sent back to retrieve some prisoners.
