My mother, Celia, who was a fine violinist and piano player, would have fit right in with the beat of this music; her year book is in the
Train Museum in Coopersville, Michigan--1922--her brothers Abraham--1924--Issac--1930. Whenever I came into the house, she would sit right down at the piano, and start playing; I then would get out my clarinet and join her; my father would then sit down at the drums; it was a beautiful way to live.
jonnybogue - Thanks for the post re Barbara Dreiwicz. We did a gig together in CT. I have a photo from the that concert taken by a local newspaper photographer on my wall of that band.
Lots of good post on this particular Hackett recording.!!!! I would have to say this band, these musicians, this song, certainly epitomizes what a very good dixieland jazz band is all about ! Time, phrasing, beautifully created solos, superb backing ,piano, drums, banjo and especially tuba......AWESOME..!
Speaking of tuba players, two guys that I've worked with are Bill Crow and Greg McCurty. Both excellent players and a woman named Barbara from New Jersey is also right up there.
Oh how I love this music!! Great band...great tunes!! I wish my father had lived to hear this,,,,(Frank Melrose,,blues, boogie, barrelhouse piano in the early years.)
I have a band in Connecticut called Uptown Jazz. I have a bass player, Greg McCurty, who doubles on tuba, and there are times when tuba is just right for tunes.
Nick Fatool has to be one of the most underated dixie drummers. That four bar break at the end is so imaginative. He played with Goodman and Shaw and could just fit in anywhere.
I got the LP back in the 70's. It's still the greatest dixieland recording I ever heard. The addition of Abe Lincoln to trade solos w/ Teagarden was brilliant.
I saw them play this song (& more) in Rochester, Minnesota, about 1956, when I was in college. I still think this is one of the best trad jazz renditions of all time. - and by chance, a few years later I actually met Phil Stephens in LA, as I dated his lovely daughter for a short time ( she was as nice as Phil was a good bass player) - Hi Barb - if you see this. Dick Raddatz
I just have to come back here occasionaly to get my fix of this dixieland magic. I wonder if they (the band) were as pleased as so many of us are of the finished product..I bet there were!
How many times have any of you band members, leaders, used string bass over tuba? I have many times but only because I couldn't find a tuba player like Phil Stevens..Isn't he marvelous!!!! I was lucky enough in my later years playing in Cenral Florida to find many good tuba players and always chose them over string!
Another absolute GEM...!!! Thanks Bob! In fact I've never heard this song done any better by anyone or any other band period! I like the remarks MARKMANIATT makes. Thank God there are still people that know the difference. The timing, the tones the incredible phrasing of all of them make this recording MAGIC! How can people not hear the beauty?
Dont forget one of the great unsung greats of classic jazz drumming, the quite wonderful Nick Fatool.Remember, its not what you put in but what you leave out thats important.
Will you be putting up Baby Won't You Please Come Home? & Sunday? I have the album too. I found the Jazz Ultimate LP at Amoeba Records in 1993 for $9.95 and was told to be happy the record was still intact.
For yur information, both Jazz Ultimate, and Coast Concert with extras are available on Mosaic MD-4-167, The Complete Capitol Recordings Of Jack Teagarden. Other Jack Teagarden recordings also on this set.

Who could possibly dislike this?! I'd give anything to have been a fly on the wall.
Hackett was a monster. What mellifluous lines and ideas he could come up with!
