I'm glad I watched the "Wiring a Lamp" by doitbest before watching this. It became pretty clear that the reason the lamp wouldn't turn on was because the wires were attached to the socket screws incorrectly. Baybea simply reversed the wires and it worked. It helps to know the reason why, so you would know what to look for next time.
Also doitbest explains the knot. This is a code standard for making it impossible or extremely difficult to pull the cord off the socket screws.
This presenter randomly connects the two wires to the lamp socket, completely ignoring the very important issue of wiring with the correct polarity. Very dangerous. If you don't wish to be electrocuted or have your house burn down, please do a search on YouTube for this video instead: "Wiring a Lamp" by doitbest.
It is a good idea to maintain polarity on the lamp socket. The wire which connects to the smaller of the plug prongs should be wired to the socket screw which supplies current to the socket center connection - not the metal outside part into which the buib screw surface touches.
You didn't mention anything about polarity on this video. Your particular lamp cord may not be polarized, but a lot of lamps are. Rest assured, if you get the polarity incorrect, your cord will fry once you plug it up and you will damage your lamp.
I would so electrocute myself still! I have to do my wall switch here shortly, I bashed into it and it now doesn't work :( Hope you're doing great! Love You! Jolene Sugarbaker The Trailer Park Queen
haha! Just remember not to do what I did and not touch the silver part of the bulb screw in when plugged in and also, make sure you have it unplugged when taking it apart. (hugs to you!!)
Yup and if you find the lamp switch is stripped or not working...just buy a switch in the hardware store and do it the same way I showed on the video. There you go :)
LOL I got sick and tired of waiting for my husband to get around to wiring a lamp so I asked him to show me. Pretty easy eh? Thanks for watching dustbunny :)
