awesome video guys, my first car was an 86 subaru wagon, Im dyin to get a brat. they are an icon to the pacific NW (oregon). would love to hit the dunes here in a suby.
Subaru owners buy subaru's for a reason, that is to be different and kick every other cars ass off-road and get any where you really need to go on 20+ mpg. if we wanted a big rig to go 4x4'in we would. nothing against truck's, but with gas prices i just cant afford it.
After selling the Brumby in this video I wanted another 4wd. My brother bought a 4Runner, put 35" tyres under it, twin lockers, twin dual range, etc etc. After seeing what it can do it makes Subaru's seem a bit lacking.
I've bought another Subaru though, because I like the car feel and I like to push the little Subaru to see what it can do.
Not putting down Subies; I like them and have had two. Still have a '91 Legacy. But I have had several Jeep XJ Cherokees, all in 4x4 with the 4.0l six cylinder, and all of them got over 20 mpg, fyi.
i have a DL wagon just like the one in the video, you guys have heaps hard sand or something, the sand dunes around Newcastle and Sydney (AUS) can NEVER be traversed by a subaru, beleive me i have tried and failed miserably (well, not the dry parts anyway), and it looks like you guys dont even have your tyres let down
That sand there isn't too hard, but its not soft either. A fair way further down or up that beach and it gets really soft. Almost bogged it with the 27x8.5's deflated a couple of times. I was absolutely amazed that I drove out of that first bit when the wave hit the car. This was my first time on the beach in the Subie and we didn't let the tyres down that day. After welding the rear diffs these two Subaru's climbed those dunes and others so much easier. Pitty I have no video of that.
actually with the subaru gearbox they have a lock between front and back when 4x4 mode is engaged so there is always at least 1 front wheel and 1 back wheel in drive at all times. 2 wheel drive I guess :)
lol I dont know about that but I bet with a bigger lift and bigger, more aggressive tires it would be, but thats only because f150s, rams, and chevys are all shit, ur wrong about toyotas and landrovers though.
still if u really want to off road buy an old jeep, my 1990 xj can do everything in this video without even putting it in 4x4.
well most jeeps are bad on road but the xj is an exception its not bad at all but I would love to drive a brumby but i dont think we have them here in the U.S. or maybe Iv just never seen one, subarus are great cars though, especially the impreza:)
Well i have never been in a xj but I'll take your word for it. I cant agree with you more,I love Subies (if u couldn't tell from my username). And there are brumbies in the U.S. but 1. they r called brats instead and 2. there arnt many.
I had an old '86 Subaru Station. What a beast ! It climbed everywhere and was able to do an average of 110miles/hour on the interstate ! I LOVE old Subarus !!! Now mine's dead cut in two parts because of the rust... :(
I know. Robot Rock is some of the best music. Subarus are the best cars. (my oppinion) but Subarus are by fact some of the best if not the best at what they do.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaa I had a leone turbo that looked just the same as the white one in the video!! same type of rims and evrything!! I miss it:-/ it went like stink! water injection, 3 inch exhaust system, green stuff filter and a lot of boost!!
I freakin' love offroading, but was forced to give up my '82 Landcruiser because of gas mileage! Now I have a 2003 Subaru Baja and it's great on the trails! I was wondering though. Can you lift a newer model Baja? Easily?
danm the wagon did a wheelie

beautiful video! love the little red brumby...maybe why i went and bought my own! :)

not in the older subarus, its either 2wd or 4wd (50/50 split). Newer subies have a centre diff which is weak offroad but still usable.
Phizinza 2 years ago
@Phizinza exactly!! hence you get noobs going to the dunes in their new family car subaru outbacks and getting stuck going DOWN the hill LOL
pedekiller 1 year ago
@pedekiller And now I have an Outback, hahahahah... Will take it on the sand soon and hopefully get some videos of it.

is there a centre diff?
tpvalley 2 years ago

this is so true, saw a subie try, just bogged, saw another 4 x4 pajero i think, also it bogged, this was on readhead beach.

your cars performed admirably for not having locking differentials. You basically traversed whole sand dunes in 1-wheel drive.
Well done!

Holy Sh** that Brumby is a better offroader than f-150s, rams, toyotas, chevys stock. Maybe Landrovers with locked or ajustable diffs.

There is a few places coming up with designs. Try looking at PK Lift kits at Ozified or Allied Armament Subaru.
