Ive been listening to the White Horse Inn since the beginning. After all Michael Horton is a Biola grad like me.
Its nice to see it now on YouTube as I do my entire career between Asia and Europa. Not much BIBLE being taught here in the Catholic part of the Netherlands, or the Protestant part of Holland for that matter. The Dutch are the most atheistic country in Europa.
But we will never get anywhere with understanding or true peace with one another when we continue the sectarian practices that Jesus himself forbid. Not saying because I adhere to an older tradition I am right, none of us resemble the early church that was started by Christ and his followers. Perhaps that is what the coming kingdom will be- no weird practices or "smells and bells" just the complete and total joy of being in the presence of the Lord like the first church was.
I know. That's why I included them. I had a guy overseas who doesn't see this kind of thing, and he said he was horrified. It gets good about 2 minutes in on each video, though. That's when the WHI start talking. :)
Yeah I was admittedly bein' a little hyperbolic. To be honest, this (that is, what is being portrayed here) is "where I come from," but only because I come from about every theological confusion you can imagine.
Anyway, I love your materials here Lane. Let me join the line of well-wishers and grateful brothers.
Was baptized two weeks ago, and getting married two weeks from today.
Osteen's right... it just keeps gettin' better and better.
I can relate with you about growing up with theological confusion. I grew up SBC and the video presented in the first 2 minutes of this video is actually from the business (I refuse to call it a church) that I attended right before I left all that nonsense.
Excellent topic. So many of my friends and acquaintances are caught up in church entertainment. They think that providing a nifty show is the way to win people to Christ. What they fail to realize is that one cannot adequately equip the saints to do God's work with entertainment-driven programs.
They also fail to realize Christian worship (reading of the scriptures & the breaking of bread) is a memorial service continuing a trust. That trust involves showing the Lord's death until he comes. Has nothing to do with being entertained.
I consider myself a sinner saved by the Grace of God through Jesus Christ...who would still be lost if not for churches willing to reach me where I was - just like Jesus did, time and time again.
"That part's in red in my Bible - which means it's especially important."
Why do you not believe that all Scripture is inspired by the Holy Ghost? The "red" was added by later revisionists. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John did not write Jesus' words in red. According to the Bible, it is all inspired by Him.
I guess I tend to be of the belief that if God created it all, and being that He is omnipotent, He'd certainly want to use every means possible to reach the lost.
We leave in a society driven by the media - street preaching and boycotts aren't going to reach the lost. But media-driven teaching just might.
Had Jesus not gone into the den of sinners, would He have reached the people He did?
When the focus is criticizing others instead of preaching Gospel, we should worry.
"When the focus is criticizing others instead of preaching Gospel, we should worry."
I assume that you consider "being critical" with using righteous judgment which God actually commands us to do. If we hold to your line of reasoning, though, why did you spend the last 3 paragraphs criticizing others instead of preaching the Gospel? That's obviously hypocritical. Do you consider yourself to be a good person?
There's a difference between being being media-driven and being entertainment-driven.
Moreover, I see no Biblical justification for the claimt hat God would want to use any means whatsoever to win the lost. This fails to consider the long-term consequences of such tactics. I read about one guy who used to include Bible tracts with the marijuana that he sold. Even if we suppose that someone was converted this way, it is still bound to compromise the credibility of Christians.
Dude...I think you need to step away from the PC. Seriously, I'm just saying.
I also think that the focus should always be on the Scriptures and Jesus. Is Mark's necklace illegal? Is it a sin to wear it? Did God make a mistake with His creation of marijuana...or did, we, man-kind, just start abusing it?
Does God not want pot smokers to hear about His son? I don't get it...
Since you resorted to pejorative arguments for your "defense" instead of answering direct questions, it's obvious that you're also aware of how much of a case you have (which is not much if at all).
"Enter in at the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leads to destruction, and many there be who go in there: Because narrow is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leads unto life, and few there be that find it."
Watching the first two minutes of this video was extremely painful and sad! This foolishness is NOT what our Lord Jesus shed His Blood and died for, whatever happened to "God is a Spirit:and they that worship Him must worship Him in spirit and in truth?",John 4:24
I wish they'd put Andy Stanley and North Point ministries on here.

I am going to TAKE "your" videos and put them on my channel,

In some of these churches lots of folks bring Bibles. It's not always that easy to discern seeker friendly churches.

The first scene was from a church you used to attend?

I wanted to watch (after having just watched the "Crossless" and "Christless" series), but 40 seconds in it is just too painful. I'm wincing.

When will Christians sing the word of God again, like the psalms?

Mark 2:17
On hearing this, Jesus said to them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."
That part's in red in my Bible - which means it's especially important.

You people continue to lump these churches and the use of secular music in with things like sex acts and drug use.
Sex, drugs...rock and roll. One doesn't fit...one isn't a sin.
ThaFnDeej 3 years ago
Oh, so seeker-sensitive pastors wouldn't resort to something like wearing a marijuana necklace or something to "win souls to Christ"?
Maybe you aren't familiar with Mark Driscoll. Give this video about 5-7 minutes in:

Regarding your first suggestion, I'll continue to ignore your advice.
As far as the rest:
Did Jesus eat with sinners?
LaneCh 3 years ago
If I could roll my eyes any harder, I could see brain matter right now.
And Jesus said to the Pharisees, "have you not read..."
Is grass green? Is the sky blue? Where does the water come from?
Again - you narrow in on the least important aspect of my response - ignoring the actual discussion.
Lame. I'll leave you to your narrow view of God.

Nowadays, the world is turning the church upside down, instead of the other way around :(
