$75,000 top prize for a World Pool Championship!! This is disgraceful, consider the prize money other sports pay out for Major events. You couldn't get Tiger Woods or Roger Federer to even show up for the event if that was the prize money for winning!! The Sport of Pool & Billiards needs to court Corporate Sponsors from outside the industry and make a serious effort to build the Sport and the Prize Money for the Events!!
I don't alot of sponsors understand or appreciate the skill and dedication required to play cuesport games, so they don't give the support they would for other sports. To be successful financially in football, basketball, baseball, or some other sport, you merely have to have the skill required to get signed to a team, then the millions roll in faster than you can blink. In cuesports you have to win every major tournament and do alot of gambling to be financially sound.
When you think about it, a lot of Corporate Executives from outside of the Billiard Industry have spent $1000's on a fancy, elegant Pool Table for their home & or Office. They buy these Pool tables as a Status Symbol, yet they can't support the Sport that provides that Status! If I were involved in finding support for the Pool Ind. I would go 1st to the Beer Co's., many have used Pool in their Ads! & They could certainly afford to contribute to the Prize fund.
After talking to the Beer Co's I would then go to the major furniture Manufacturers and Retailers, since many, many people buy a Pool Table for their home based solely on the fact that it is an elegant piece of furniture, and is a nice compliment to their other furniture. The point is, is that Pool has many resources available for sponsorship that are not being actively pursued!
I'm not talking about the Major Team Sports, I'm talking about Individual Sports such as Golf, Tennis, Billiards, Bowling, etc...
Win a Major Golf or Tennis Tourny & you go home with a $Million+, Win a Major Pool or Bowling Tourny & you go home with maybe $100,000. Billiards & Bowling require the just as much Skill, Dedication, Practice, & Hand/Eye Coordination as Golf & Tennis, yet they receive the least respect! It's up to the people in charge (& Players) of the Pro Tours to change this!
@sixcues Biggest reason why those golfers tennis players etc, get those big tme paydays is endorsments. pool tournamnets get sponsered by pool products, not nike, reebok, budweiser, gatorade, ford, aleve, etc. etc. And too make a long story short, the sport is just terribly undertelevized. you get about 2 or 3 mens tournaments a year at the most. So naturally theres not much attraction for companys to want to sponser events when they dont know if anybody is even gonna watch the damn thing.
