I mean if you give a guitar to slash and ask him to play something it would be boring because he doesnt know music. Slash works well in a hard rock band context. Upon a base maybe he can play good solos but since he is a limited guitarist he cannot play other styles.

In my opinion slash is a good solo writer. Sweet child o mine and November rain solos are brilliant. I think his ability lies on that he plays just the necessary notes, like David Gilmour. He is not a virtuoso and maybe he doenst know music theory but he has an amazing sense on when to play and when not play.
