Thing is, this band do wistful like no other. And this being one of their definitively melancholic and reflective offerings, I think Gary's detached, quizzical mien is of a piece with the material.
I fell in love with Rainy day music and, you know, wore the shit out of the tape, etc.. but after watching numerous footage of them, live I can't help feeling the same thing I felt when I went to see Wilco.. They're obviously technically great and the songs are beautifully written.. but Where's the excitement, passion, happiness, involvement.. in the playing of it... Its like "C'mon guys.. I don't quite BELIEVE you today".. play that shit like you MEAN it.
While I got the chills watching this ... I can totally agree with your overall point. If the passion isn't clearly evident on stage, you are like instantly removed from the power of the songs. More like going through the motions. thoughtful comment, my friend, and great taste in bands.
So I became a fan towards the end of college when Rainy Day Music came out. Went to see the band at the Exit/In with Gary Louris and then I made it out to a show on the final tour with Louris and Olson together. The Exit/In show as AMAZING. I was bummed out quite a bit when they broke up the band. And just as I was getting into them!!!! :-(
Really great combination of guitars and vocals--really amazing.

Maybe you were expecting David Lee Roth in a unitard with a sausage stuffed down his pants. Is that what it takes to MEAN it?
Give me a break. It's a great song. I wish I could have seen it live.

Yeah... WOAH ! Jeez...! What was I thinking, right? I shall keep my head down and adore, blindly in future!..and refrain from having a point of view.
I love this band, by the way, in case I didn't make that evident enough for folks who aren't into subtlties and stuff.

I saw these guys in the 411 club in the mid eighties, they're great, why doesn't the crowd shut the fuck up?

One of my favorite bands of all time. I saw them perform in Denver in '03 and had tears in my eyes the whole time. RIP Jayhawks.
