The 4 NFC playoff teams this year ( Rams, Vikings, Redskins, Cardinals) were pretty even overall; any one of them could have won the conference title; this game wasn't decided until the last minute..
That's right......George allen has Duane Thomas and Sonny Jurgenson on the bench for the game...right? Well if you don't use the best players, you lose........
Pat Hadem was the Ram QB from mid-1976-1978; it was Roman Gabriel from 1966-72, John Hadl from 1973-mid 1974, and James Harris from mid-1974-mid 1976, with help from Ron Jaworski...
I've always heard that Joe Theismann had to resort to kick returning during the Jurgensen/Kilmer wars at QB, but I've never seen him on film actually doing it. This is pretty rare footage!
Whatever happened to this Harris guy that was the QB for the Rams? They said he was the #2 passer in the NFC at that time ..... I'm not sure I'd heard of him before and I'm something of a fan of NFL history....Pat Hayden must have soon taken over the QB spot after this guy since that's who I think of when I think of the QB position for the Rams in the 70's
@castlerubric In 1975, the Rams used 2 QB's (harris, jaworski) and in 76 haden made three. Harris was injured most of the 76 season. Haden took the rams to the NFC Championship game. Harris ended up a charger.
@castlerubric In 1975, Harris hurt his shoulder and played with a sore arm all season. More injury in 1976 as the video uploader pointed out, but in that 1976 title game at Minnesota, they could have used Harris when the ball was on Viking s' one-yard line in the 1st quater. All the 6'4",215 pound Harris would have had to do is fall forward. But instead theyused the 5'10" Pat Haden on the QB sneak and he got stopped. The Viking blocked the FG and returned it 90 yards for TD.
@plntntvzn As a Vikings fan, at that time it sure looked to me like Harris was not appreciated as much as he should have been. Being a quarterback in a Chuck Knox's run heavy, conservative offense was not easy. He got traded to the Chargers when Fouts was holding out, and was effective until Fouts got back, then it was "game over"
@drwayne88 "James Harris could rise completely above the game because his arm was so big and he was a ballerina in the pocket. He could really move around for a guy 6'4". To this day, I admire what he did in LA, because he got caught in crossfire with 4 QBs. He didn't get enough credit for laying the groundwork. He was putting too much pressure on his own shoulder pads. I don't know any QB had to look over his shoulder as much as James did," said Skip Bayless.
@castlerubric I'd say you're not much of a fan of NFL history if you haven't heard of James Harris. And Pat's last name is spelled Haden. Anyway not to bash anyone here but Harris wasn't what I'd call a ballerina in the pocket. He was fine on called rollouts but the rap on him in his last year with the Rams (1976), was that he took too long to find receivers. This was evident in the Monday night game when an inferior 49er team sacked him 10 times. He put Tommy Hart in the pro bowl.
Rams are the top of the list for great teams that hard a hard time making the Super Bowl (Vikings are king of that category!). Of course the Rams made it to the 1980 Super Bowl but that team wasn't even close to being one of their all time best IMO.....a very GOOD team but not a truly great one. Rams had some outstanding teams in the 60's and 70's that never quite made "the final cut"
Yeah, Allen needed to put Sonny in at the start of the 2nd half, not wait till the last quarter. Sonny had been on fire the week before in demolishing the Bears, and Billy simply couldn't get the offense moving in the first half.
George, George, George, God Damn it! Sonny was Hall of Famer! He should have been startin'! If he was good enough to start for Limbardi he should have been good enough for you!! We still love ya, George. Damn it.

The Rams won this game 19-10. And in the following week, they lost the NFC Championship Game to the Vikings in Freezing Cold Minnesota, 14-10.
