to anyone whos wondering: this represents Vietnam soldiers that were psychologically scarred/dependent on heroine. When heroin dependent soldiers returned to America they were sick for months because they no longer had access to the drug. Max was one, and is hallucinating from withdrawal symptoms. The nurses represent his addiction to the "warm gun" which is the heroin. Since he is addicted to the it, the only way for "happiness" is injecting more into him, or withdrawal symptoms kick in.

I had a really hard time enjoying this movie. There were so many preachy moments. It just didn't fit my idea of what the beatles represented. It was so over blown and shmaltzy in some places I just wanted to barf.

It didn't help that whoever produced the soundtrack destroyed all the vocalist's performances by pitch-correcting all of their vocals so that they all had that electronic whiney sound.

It's cool if other people like it of course, but it's just not for me.

The reason he is dancing, according to director Julie Taymor, is that the patients in the hospital are kind of possesing the priest to speak out against the abuse they had taken during the Vietnam War and the way they were treated when they came back home.
