It's a piece manufactured by Brian Dewan. Actually a friend of a friend of mine. Really cool old dude, makes random electronic instruments... has a really cool 1950s feel to it too. That particular instrument I think is called the Swarmatron.

I'm a huge NIN fanboy, but I also know these are real people. It pains me to think there will never be another NIN album, but so be it. I agree with Trent about getting over the past. I'm sure he was much shittier place personally and had a lot more pain and frustration to transfer into some amazing creative catharsis, but at some point, you have to realize you are a big fucking rockstar and life doesn't suck. He's still making good music. He just won an Oscar for fucksake.

I was at one of the final NIN shows and I heard him with my own ears say that NIN isn't going away, they're just not touring "for a while." That's all he's ever said in any interviews, websites, etc. That NIN is no longer touring for the foreseeable future, possibly forever, but if they do tour again, it won't be until after a long break. Anything further than that came from somewhere else.
