  • Why is this documentary do they say that America was the most powerful nation in the world?? This is 1917 we're talking about, America barely had military back then. It's army was smaller than Portugal's at that time, LOL.

You can tell this documentary was made in the 20th century when America was regarded as some marvelous place by most of Europe.

  • @madhammudeux economic wise America was the most powerful which easily transfers into military power as demonstrated by Germany during this war. Here is the GDPs of the main belligerents of WW1 in billions of 2008 USD Germany 153 Austria-Hungary 30 U.K. 199 British Dominions 53 France 83 Russia 51 Italy 37 U.S. 489 *Ottoman GDP is estimated around 30 Crafts, N.F.R. (1983), "Gross National Product in Europe, 1870-1910: Some New Estimates",
  • @nathancproduction

sorry but America's armed forces in 1917 were pitifully small. Most of their army was based in Texas protecting against border disputes with Mexico. It was essentially a third rate world power. Read a history book.

  • @madhammudeux America's army in 1917 was small... but that is mostly the military size, it is not the potential. America's military was small because its government felt that the Atlantic and Pacific oceans protected it from the military conflicts of Europe and Asia. It had nothing to do with the economic potential of the USA. If unleashed with proper coordination, America's economy could build any army extremely well equipped. America in fact would arm the Allies in WWI AND WWII.

  • @madhammudeux America was the most powerful country in the world. America had 35% of the worlds manufacturing output. Most of the allied weapons were made in America. America had huge resources and a population of 92 million.

  • @moonshot925 In 1990 America was the most powerful country in the world?

    Good fucking god.

A new level of stupidity has been reached.

Do you even have a brain? Or have you been lobotomized? What exactly is wrong with your brain?

  • @TheLiberalKnight In 1990? Of course.

  • @moonshot925 Don't even speak to me. I prefer talking to intelligent people. If you believe what you just said, I doubt you're even a human. You're probably an ape trained to type a keyboard.

  • @TheLiberalKnight Then who was the most powerful country in 1990?

  • @moonshot925 Fiji

  • @moonshot925 Britain, by several country miles.

  • @TheLiberalKnight So who was the superpower in 1990?

  • @greydotjaguar Britain, by a country mile.

  • @TheLiberalKnight hey man, try answering with coherent thoughts or ideas. The endless attempts to end your rambling comments with something witty fail terribly.

Again, focus on something interesting or at least close to the point. Leave humor to those than understand it.

  • @clearlogicify Humour? You have no say on humour. You just said that America was the most powerful country in the world in 1900- and nobody laughed. Your jokes aren't funny.

  • @TheLiberalKnight Are we talking about 1900 or 1990?

  • @moonshot925 1900- Britain was the most powerful country in the world. In 1990, America was.

  • @TheLiberalKnight you're not your.

I didn't make any jokes you spastic. You're every bit as dumb as we think. No irony or sarcasm.

  • @clearlogicify Did you make a spelling mistake or something? We are talking about 1900, not 1990. Let's just clarify this.

  • @TheLiberalKnight No, I was pointing out the lameness of your posts. They lack points and your attempts at humor makes us cringe. You've continue to miss every point, but we know it's your mental condition talking, so I'm a little embarrassed to point your many failings out.

Thanks to the gentleman that sent the private message about your "issues"

  • @clearlogicify God, if you are going to sit here and think up imaginative insults against me, I won't waste my time with you.

  • @TheLiberalKnight Hope you realize I'm not picking on you for being the way you are, just want you to either stop, or be less annoying. I know it's cruel to pick on your type, sorry.

  • @madhammudeux The U.S. produced 35% of the world's economic output at the time of WWI, a staggering statistic. By production capacity alone, the U.S. was the world's primary superpower before, during, and after WWI.

  • thank you so much for posting this! you ROCK!

  • I also think that the Americans of that time whould have been horrified by the US imperialism that's taking place now.

  • @ulaghchi Imperialism is taking territory in exchange for a peace settlement. no such thing has ever happened in American history apart from a special case in 1945, and 1898. in the case of Japan, it was held as a means of occupation and was returned 20 years later. In 1898 Cuba was taken and set free, while the Philippines started on the road to the same, although rebellions and massive internal complications postponed nationhood for decades.

  • @ulaghchi Please fact check next time before running your mouth.

  • @ulaghchi

America isn't an Imperial country. It used to exercise a form of imperialism though. Basically they'd steam into lands not controlled by any internationally recognized government, exterminate the population, and call the new land something like 'Ohio'.

The also seized vast quantities of Mexico, renaming those as states too.

  • Very good program, but they didn't mention the slavery in America and the genocide of Native Americans. At least they mentioned the exploitation of the immigrants.

  • @ulaghchi America had slavery and there were cases of genocide (though it is nowhere near as simple as the Nazi's 'final solution'). However, neither of those things related to America's entry into World War 1 and so BBC is excused from mentioning them.

  • @ulaghchi The native population was 95% gone before America even became a country.

  • @ulaghchi This was about WWI, not the history of the United States during the 19th century.

  • love how that tree at 7:20 was about to crush the camera man

  • Didn't think America was the Most powerful Nation in the world at the time.

  • @TheImperialistStates I'm American and no we weren't in 1914 Germany was but, overall Europe did need our help

  • @navySEALteam5 I think Britain was lol. I was be sarcastic before.

  • AND : 4.It will be no longer safe to stay in the country which is at war.

  • You know why wars are terrifying? Well,it's also sad. Why? 1.The whole village/city will be destroyed because of bombs and mines. 2.If you were one of these refugees, you are going to be away from your homes forever. 3.If the country lost battle, the country that won battle will take over the land or increase the size of it's own.

  • Uh oh,so many refugees...l..

  • People :"Run! Get away!" Soldiers : (Fighting with weapons......)

  • man, theodore roosevelt was the MAN!

  • @dthdc4

don't understand that you are upset he isn't greatful, he has not to be grateful caus i guess that not even his father was born before 1950...

second thing what i don't understand about that is, what's your reason of being upset here? I guess your father isn't even born before 1950, too.

  • @dthdc4

Destroying each other was a long time ago for Europeans, 4 generations. Europeans have enough background, to be bored of wars, contrary to some US war mongers as little Bushette who loved to put his shit everywhere in Middle east, only to satisfy Zionists or bankers interests. And a lot of Europeans don't think specially that they are the fountainhead of civilization.

  • @dthdc4 iPod and MP3, which are great but not important what so ever.

  • @dthdc4 I love how you use two of the worst examples possible.

  • @Sagit112585 For sure!

  • @dthdc4

And for this Nazi thing, it's what i said before. 90 % of Europeans don't give a shit. A lot of US turds talk like if time was frozen 70 years ago, like a bunch of abnormal persons.Europe in 1945 and Europe in 2011 are 2 totally different planets. It's like if you talk about Geronimo with US teens. European union is an united continent, with a lot of connections between countries. Ask to French. Italians, or Germans in 2011, what means WW2 for them. You will see. Boring after a while.

  • @dthdc4

The main reason of US WW2 involvment in Europe was to avoid his control by USSR.80 % of German forces were already destroyed on Eastern front, the cemetary of Wehrmacht, when US invasion started .And when you say that the French told to the US to get out, you talk like an ignorant deep south redneck.Don't confound basic people and government.Concerning inventions, most comes from Europe. The boring thing with US citizens, is that they believe that history of the world started in 1776.

  • @Sagit112585 Those r sheep. Lol. Of course it was way different way back then.

  • @dthdc4

Maybe the ones who are grateful are old persons in Normandy, who were directly touched, albeit biggest contribution was made by Soviets. It's there that 80 % of German forces were really destroyed. But a lot of French or European teens don't even know that a war took place in Europe 70 years ago. They don't give a shit, and play or use their MP3 or IPOD, like everywhere else. And for many old French who received on their faces tons of US bombs,it was not Hollywood.Come in the real world

  • @dthdc4

You make me laugh with your usual, such ingrates or we saved your asses craps.A thing which always amaze me is this dumb obsession about WW2 in USA.For 90 % of Europeans, this is antique craps which means absolutely nothing anymore,as it was 70 years ago. Someone BORN in 1945 is 66. The ones really involved at this time are in their late 80's, for the youngest, who were 18 or 19 in 1943 or 44. German and French are the best economical partners for decades. How ridiculous US folks are.

  • @Camarale You are the one being funny. Within 10 to 20 years of the war you were trying to deride Americans and look down on us. It was the same way after WW1. We got along better with the Germans than you French. In fact Germans were more popular in France than Americans. I am beginning to believe that some of my people were right. You tricked us into WW1 and then tell us: thank you now get out.

    Vous etes tres sot.

  • @dthdc4

You're the one who is really ridiculous. No one forced the US to interfer in WW1. It was above all for economical interests, and this war was mostly finished when US troops were involved. Same thing for WW2. Most of the job was already done on eatern front, when US troops landed in Europe, not only in France. But also in Italy, Belgium, Nederlands, and other places, like Austria, or Czechoslovakia. You always talk about US losses, like if it was only US who suffered casualties.

  • @dthdc4

Europeans don't consider themselves as the center of the world. Look at yourselves first. US citizens, outside USA, and not specially in Europe, but also in Asia, Middle east, and many other places are considered as nothing special. No more or less than others nations.Too many US folks are brainwashed by these "god bless America" craps. It's why they are suprised when they travel overseas, expecting to be received like gods. USA are a place like others. World population is 7 billions.

  • @Camarale Yes you do. That is why you are responding with your usual Euro-haughtiness. That is why we Americans are blessed that we avoided your pettiness and usual crap. Within 10 years of the war while were trying to defend you from the Communists, you were trying to denigrate and diminuate our role in both wars. US citizens try to learn from the world and you spit on us.

  • @dthdc4 Whole Europe is as big, if not bigger than USA. European population is 500 millions, almost twice US population, And in terms of GDP, European union is the first economical power in the world, I think that's it's rather US citizens, for the most part, who are self centered and uninformed of what's going on outside their borders, Future major powers are located in Asia, Of course, China, but India, too. And wars on US soil were not to be compared to industrial wars as WW1 and 2.

  • @dthdc4 Fench Indochina was invaded by Japanese, and French troops there, were not enough numerous and in the condition to be involved in other theaters. Your arguments are typical US, always talking about wars, without having even experience it in your backyards. US troops were always involved overseas, far. US are a remote place, protected by 2 oceans, and far from world realities. Europeans, Russians, Asiatics, knows what wars means. They didn't watch it in movie theaters or news.

  • @Camarale French Indochina was a FRENCH colony. You talk about our wars being overseas when for the first nearly 150 years since European settlement most US wars until 1898 were fought in our front and back yards. You as usual talk about wars in your yards when you could have avoided fighting in France if only you had taken the offensive to help your Polish or Czech allies, then the war would have been fought in Germany.

I am glad our oceans protected us but we had possessions threatened.

  • @dthdc4 Pacific was an important theater, but the biggest casualties of WW2 were in Europe and Russia. China too, but it was not really WW2 there. It was a local war, with casualties at the scale of China. US territory was far from this war, and was not impacted, contrary to most of European countries who were devastated. And i don't see your point when you talk about French involvment in Pacific. This theater was 10000 miles away of the French who were enough busy with their war.

  • @dthdc4

Entire units surrendered only on orders, even after armistice, like in the Maginot line. Some of these forts belched a storm of dozens thousands shells on German units who frontly attacked, and were slaughtered here. A lot of forts were never taken by Wehrmacht. Soviets lost millions prisoners in the hands of Germans during Barbarossa operation, but Anglosaxons never mock them. Maybe, because the decisive factor for final victory the following years, was the enormous size of USSR.

  • @dthdc4

It was not the fault of basic soldiers, who fought bravely in many cases. It was the fault of an high command managed by old generals, with outdated tactics, and who were still fighting the previous war.And the trauma and impact of WW1, too.French governments of the 30's were ruled by blind Socialist pacifists who never wanted to see the truth when Hitler rearmed Germany. They never released the necessary funds to modernize French army.French air force, was obsolete compared to Luftwaffe.

  • @Camarale Your tanks were better than those of the Germans in 1940 but you did not use them en masse.

  • @dthdc4

Total US WW2 losses were 416800, on all fronts, Pacific and Europe. Even French casualties were bigger, 600000, in 5 years, military and civilians. A thing which still surprise me, is that Germany size is equivalent to Montana, and even if their population was almost 80 millions at this time, they controled most of Europe and the European part of USSR. They have a very good sense of organization, and their tough resistance against a coalition of many nations still remains as a feat.

  • @dthdc4

US WW2 force was above all a material industralized force. US factories endlessly supplied thousands aircrafts, tanks, trucks, for themselves and others, like Soviets. US sacrifice was real on many battlefields, but Germans were crushed by massive bombings. Like Cobra operation in Normandy, who was like hell on earth. 5000 tons of bombs dropped on 4 square kilometers, to break the front, and spread in France. On the contrary, Soviets paid the biggest toll of human lives. 27 millions.

  • @Camarale That is quite true. The Soviets were willing to expend those lives while the US believed in sacrificing machines. Machines can be replaced. Human lives can never be.

  • @dthdc4

It's why i can't stand some ignorant US or British fucks who always spit on the French,i don't talk about you, calling them cowards, who didn't fire a single shot,It's an insult to the 100000 French soldiers killed in the 6 weeks of campaign of France in May/June 1940. German casualties were 45000 killed or MIA,and 111000 woundeds. They remember only German troops marching in Paris, which was declared open city by French government, but forget the harsh combats in North or east borders.

  • @dthdc4

All Europe was occupied. Except England, for the simple reason that it's an island. British were beaten in Belgium and France in 1940.Don't forget, too, that French WW1 tremendous losses and destructions were still present in all memories and lives,as it was only 22 years ago. Most of WW1 was fought in France. German territory was totally spared. If the US army of 1940, had to face the Blietzkrieg, they would have been pulverized. War on the west, in 1944, was mostly won by air forces.

  • @Camarale That is true. The US Army was barely the size of Holland's in 1940. Moreover there was the feeling with some justification that we were tricked into the first one. However even before Pearl Harbor the US was building up its forces both in the air, land, and sea. Moreover not only did we have to fight the Nazis but did nearly all of the fighting against Japan. By Normandy the USA put the lessons learned from 1940 and 1941 to good use against the Nazis.

  • @dthdc4

The Germans were already exhausted, when US troops came. Their losses were tremendous. US help was useful, with fresh troops, but not vital. It would have been a question of extra months, to finish this war. And i remind you, that German population at this time, 70 millions, was almost the equivalent of both British and French population.France, 40 millions. Concerning 1940, German strategy was invincible. They easily marched in USSR,at the beginning.Soviets lost 4 millions prisoners.

  • @dthdc4

Both camps were in mutinies. You hear only what you want to hear. Particularly in the VERDUN battle, a French victory, where a lot of German troops deserted. US intervention was almost a joke, compared to tremendous French and German casualties. 700000 casualties for Verdun, in 10 months on both sides. Not even 120000 US troops killed in less than 6 months of real involvment. Open the right history books, don't be brainwashed by Fox news craps, like a lot of your ignorant brothers.

  • OH and BTW I despise Fox News. I watch CNN and MSNBC.

  • @dthdc4

US intervention was useful, but almost peanut, compared to tremendous French and German casualties. both sides were exhausted and most of the job was already done when US troops started to go into combat. Without US intervention, It would have been a question of extra months for the French or British, to finish this war.

  • @Camarale The USA should never had gotten envoled in this pointless war, the USA had no business fighting in this European dick measuring contest and that's all it was a bunch of politicians, kings and rulers sending millions of young boys to die in trenches. The USA made millions if off this war before we entered. We sold both sides weapons and even lots of the mustard gas. We should have kept selling it to both sides making millions off fools who cant get along. But instead we let our boys die

  • @cwood4ever

All wars are pointless, except for the same swindlers, weapons dealers, or bankers. Mr Bush grandpa was in business with Adolf. US oil companies supplied Nazis too. War in Iraq was for oil. Same thing in Afghanistan, which is a war for gas route control. War on terror is a total crap, that only incult rednecks are eager to swallow.

  • I spit on Woodrow Wilson this fucking idiot got us into a pointless war. We didn't learn from the Civil War and as we can see now we will never learn, for each generation must relearn the same lesson. WAR IS POINTLESS

  • @dthdc4

Not only France suffered mutinies in the year 1917, but both sides.Germans too. It's understandable when you experienced 3 years of continual butcheries, like VERDUN, in 1916, for instance. France population in 1914, 40 million, was almost twice less than Germany,70 millions. France held the front almot alone during 3 years. French total casualties, from 1914 to 1918, were 1,3 million killed and 4,5 million woundeds.US casualties, for a population of 100 millions were only 117000 KIA.

  • @Camarale Really, I never heard of German mutinies, besides you wanted this war. You cheered loud and clear when war was declared. You reaped what you sowed. Sometimes I think if Germany had not resumed its submarine warfare and tried to get Mexico to attack us, they'd have won the war because the USA would never have gotten in in the first place. So if you want to say you sacrificed more, well that is because you wanted it more.

The USA never wanted any part of this war is the first place.

  • @WolfytheWolf5667 You wrote to tennesseehighstep the following: (1) don't you mean the world's? and you should. (2) You're our damned nation, Britain created you, so you have a right to help us out in war. (3) You owe us your existence.

    (4) Who do you think held off the Nazi invasion all by themselves in Europe?

    1. What do you mean?

    2. WRONG, WRONG, and WRONG again!!!

    3. We owe you diddly-squat.

    4. Nah, WRONG again-was a joint effort. No cookie for you. Nazi is WW2, but you're still WRONG.

  • freed Cuba? :P

  • @tennesseehighstep

you fucking had to! the US was trading with everyone in the war, you were selling goods and arms to both sides of the front line...you cant stir shit without getting dirty yourself!

  • America will always be the Greatest Nation in the World!

  • @JosephStalin11

    hahahahahahahahahahaha LOL!

  • @tennesseehighstep

don't you mean the world's? and you should. You're our damned nation, Britain created you, so you have a right to help us out in war. You owe us your existence. Who do you think held off the Nazi invasion all by themselves in Europe?

  • @BamFor07 I'm not disputing that! It's a fact that France suffered the worst by far.I have nothing but admiration for the French

  • I really don't understand this video. America did not emerge as the most powerful nation on earth until after WW2. At this point in time, Britain had the biggest economy and navy, Russia had the best army, France and Germany were the best in the world for technological advances.

  • 6:55 Actually Roosevelt had a very frail tone in his voice.

  • America is the best nation . We will overcome with Gods help XD ...

  • Hey, they didn't mention the slavery in America.

  • @toqtaqiya They never do. Everyone ignores the fact that America has done some fucked up things in the past.

  • @SleepyGiggles21 Well they do some bad things now too. They openly engage in imperialism and they consume most of the resources of the world.

  • It was the entry of the United States that broke the stalemate. Without the U.S. the Allies in Europe would of been forced to accept some sort of negotiated peace. Both the Central Powers and the Allies were exhausted and so were the civilian populations of all involved. The entry of the United States gave new life to the allied war effort. It wasn't so much the U.S. military as it was the U.S. spirit that won the war.

  • @BamFor07 i agree with almost everything you said except that it was a stalemate, they where bogged down in trenches but the French and British where doomed to failure if they didn't get more men and supplies quick. The Germans had it won basically, that's really what lead up to WWII they felt they had won and then been cheated. But it was a stalemate to the degree that the no one could really advance at that point.

  • @Kelthuzad126 I can't believe what a retarded statement that was. Germany was losing long before the Americans got involved. The royal navy was starving them faster than their U boats were sinking our cargos, that's a fact. The had beaten the Russians and there were extra troops heading for the western front, but that doesn't mean they were winning at ALL. I think you should apologize for saying such a horribly retarded and offensive thing.

  • @BamFor07 You should really shoot yourself for saying that, what a disrespectful, arrogant and ignorant thing to say. Please, shoot yourself.

  • America was somewhat good back then, but now it's a shithole.

  • The USA should have stayed out of WW1.

  • @tennesseehighstep you are a fool a fool a fool, think of wot the yanks YOU got out off ww1 and ww2 thats why the usa is the WORLD POWER is is 2day and u piss on the men that fort in the great war dumb yank bitch.

  • @MrBobbot77 You are a great speller, can you teach me.

  • Amazing how Americans were so patriotic back then, now at days you would not see Americans supporting any war or waving their flags.

  • Comment removed

  • Wilson was a good man. All wars profit a few people while the rest died in vain. A man who seeks not to fight, when he could profit from that endeavor, is a just man.

  • The last thing I expect from an obese guy like Teddy was for him to remove his waistcoast and proceeded to chop down a fuking tree! damm.. Those guys were tough back in the days. These tree huggers would stand no chance.

  • @Microglia1 TR was the original tree hugger. He created the national parks and went after the companies that were monopolizing industry.

  • @pefitzgerald23 Well, you know what I mean. It would be futile to point out to the fox news republicans that Lincoln was the first republican. Certain terms take on new meanings.

  • @tennesseehighstep You lot owed France

  • Did you all see them N***ers in the beginning footage? We should have rounded up all them and sent them in on the front lines First and Foremost !

  • @tennesseehighstep you're right !

  • @nascar10B Did you all see Fred Sanford standing there with a Top Hat on at 3:55 ?

  • @walleyrt69: I, also, thought it was Fred Stanford but we are wrong.

    John Elroy Sanford (December 9, 1922 – October 11, 1991), better

known by his stage name Redd Foxx, was an American comedian and

actor, best known for his starring role on the sitcom Sanford and Son.

    Maybe it was his dad.

  • @1942ann It sho nuff does look like him!

  • @tennesseehighstep we had to make the world safe for democracy

  • AND ALL THE PROMISE OF WEALTH WAS AND IS SQUANDERED! BY THE TYCOONS!

  • I love how this video talks about how great America is and it's a British narrator

  • @50sguy1 The narrator was British, but they were also neutral. They weren't stating how great America was, they were stating the facts. Also, seriously, why does it matter? As much as there are borders between the two countries, the ways of life of the British and American people are virtually identical, save some longstanding cultural differences.

  • @tennesseehighstep that happened twice THANKS EUROPE!!!

  • this documentary is mostly accurate and i enjoyed watching it. 2 points however were both missleading and false. only 14 seconds into it, the narrator distribes the US has "the most powerful nation of the world", that is completely false, she wasn't even close to that distinction at the time. 2 the sinking of the Lusitanian was over blowen by propaganda both at the time and now. Germany was well within her right to sink her. the sinking of the Britannic was and is still a far bigger issue/crime.

  • that telegram was not real, the brits created it to fool us.

  • @Rico8458 Nah, it was real. Even the German Foreign

Minister admitted he sent it. Check out Barbara

Tuchman's book on the Zimmerman Telegram.

  • @tennesseehighstep europeans dont need no dumb as uneducated americans to help out in any wars, if anything take care of ur broke as country before u talk.

  • @xxxEmmureOwnxxx wow. Europe is Europe today because of the USA. you dumb ass.

  • @xxxEmmureOwnxxx I'm American, and your right, why lie? American's are broke as Hell!
