On this date in 1955 {Jan. 29th} "Tweedle Dee" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it would peak at No. 2 {for one week} and stay for a total of 19 weeks in the Top 100. LaVern Baker's version would reach #14 in the same year and Little Jimmy Osmond would take it to #59 in 1973!!!
Just goin' through some of your older videos, Mattie. I always love this old classic, thanks for uploading it! Loved your video visually too, great job. I really enjoyed it. :) Janet
@onewomanandsomesongs Thank you so much, Janet. The song is an oldie but goodie for sure. I would put up a new video or two, but my computer is so old I can't do much with it.
This version of Tweedle Dee by Georgia Gibbs hit #2 on the Top 40 charts and #20 in the United Kingdom. It finished at #16 for the year 1955. 1955; the year that the music scene changed forever. On July 9, Bill Haley and His Comets hit #1 with Rock Around the Clock, signifying the start of the Rock Era.
@mkl62 Thank you for your informative comment. In 1955 I pestered my parents into buying Haley's record and wore it out learning to swing dance to it. During the following 4 years of highschool we improvised so much on those basic swing steps that I literally forgot how to do the original.
@senilitysux66 The Rock Era may have started with Bill Haley and Rock Around the Clock. But I'm sure that some felt that his hit was just a one time fluke. But the following May (1956), Elvis Presley hit #1 with Heartbreak Hotel and that to me is what really got Rock and Roll going.
LaVern Baker's first hit came in early 1955, with "Tweedlee Dee" reaching #4 on the R&B chart and #14 on the national US pop charts. Georgia Gibbs scored the bigger hit with her version of "Tweedle Dee", for which Baker unsuccessfully attempted to sue her. When LaVern was flying to Australia, she took out flight insurance at the airport and sent it to Gibbs with a note: "You need this more than I do because if anything happens to me, you're out of business."
I wouldn't entirely disagree because I love Ms. Baker's music and have for many a year. However, I didn't know she had recorded this. A fact which speaks both sadly and badly of the music industry's attitude and actions at the time. That said, Ms. Gibbs was also a fine artist, and we should be able to appreciate both great ladies of song.
I sincerely thank you for your comment, and strongly support your right to express your opinion.
I have put this in my favorite's list. The song grows on me everytime I listen to it. Patsy Cline had this on her short list of songs she wanted to do in her next recordings, which of course never happened. I understand why Patsy liked her so much. Heart ,feeling and a powerful voice. Nice combination! Georgia Gibbs if off the radar screen with too many. Shame.
How nice that you stopped by again. I certainly appreciate that and your comments. I have no doubt Patsy would have done a wonderful rendition of the song, but I've always loved Georgia's. I couldn't agree more that she didn't and hasn't received the acclaim she should have.
Georgia Gibbs was Patsy Cline's favorite singer. you can tell it from the manner Patsy adopted her style on certain types of songs. Georgia gibbs is so underrated that its a shame she is gets little attention. She had an amazing style to her voice and deserves more attention then what she gets. Good job of posting. I enjoyed it!
Thank you again, Joyce. As you may have noticed, my taste in music is exceedingly eclectic. I love the oldies like this one and everything in between all the way to New Age. :o)
I do too, Jackie. It's one of those great songs you just can't listen to without smiling. :o) Thank you SO much for stopping by again. You're such a dear.
Great! I doubt that I have heard this since 1955. I was a Junior when this came out. We used to call them "bubblegum" songs and really enjoyed them. She followed this one with another Bubblegum song called "Tra La La". Our High School had a mini sock hop every day at lunchtime and Tweedleedee was on the playlist for a year! Her Nibbs, Miss Gibbs, was always on the list! The slide show was a great piece of whimsey!
Thank you! I'm glad I could recall a nice memory for you. I danced to this a few times myself in high school. Only our sock hops were held on Friday nights rights usually.
So true, Jackie, and I've often pondered just how and why that is. I think it was partly due to the type of bands back then. The instrumentation maybe lent a different quality to the vocals and then there was certainly no enhancement done in the recording studio either. Just never been entirely sure. LOL
Thank you so very much for your thoughtful comment, and I'm happy you enjoyed this oldie.
Thank you so much, Tiffany. It was only my second attempt ever at making a video and mostly just for the fun of it. I really glad it gave you a smile.
Hi Mattie, I want you to know I'm glad I came by to look at this video, it is really a cute video and it surely made me smile. Great job! I love the song also. That is the program I use to make my video's too. Maybe sometime you can add some pics of yourself and your granddaughter to one of your favorite songs. that would be neat to see. I enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing. Take care and God Bless! 5*****. Your friend, Sandra

Thank you for supplying this great bit of information about Ms. Baker's recording.

The definitive version is by Ms. Lavern Baker. This is Pat Boone in drag. Very corny.
