griff1978 - I can say that your source is unequivocally WRONG! I KNOW - BEYOND ANY DOUBT - THAT THIS WAS/IS AN UMBILICAL. Only one person went over board (in the water) - the company man. Everyone else jumped over the bullwarks and held on for dear life.

They load the umbilical or flexible onto the reel and use it to install it on the seabed. Here they must have lost control of the reel and it just let loose. My sources claims that this is a flexible pipeline, not an umbilical. In the whole film you can also see one of the crew climb on board again. I would also jump on the sea if this thing got loose :)

Looking at the deck arrangement I would guess this is an umbilical, a flexible pipe or a raiser would require more deck equipment
