"Just a couple of 2 by 4s and MDF these ya table, quick coat paint, Hey Janice!! what colour's in the closets" "Ahh there some mustered yellow stuff" "Alright bring it out, chuck a couple of coloured mics up over that table Ronnie" "Right boss" "Now thats a set... ok 3...2...1... we're on"
So, I am doing research on Giorgio. The music starting from 2:12(aka "chase") is what I'm trying to figure out. Would it be safe to say that this is 70's disco pop. How about Italo disco? It uses the synthesizer a lot and the drum set in the background, which could be real or not. If someone can help me determine the genre of this kind of music, I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks :D
@mexicovasquez What you heard here is basically electronic or experimental electronic music, simpler versions (live play) on one machine....more or less like early Tangerine Dream or Klaus Schulze tunes. That version was a simple version of the chase. It was probably done on an arpeggio which basically takes normal tones and changes them into patterns etc or waves. The old synths like this were done manually. Back then your sequencers were recording and mixing them on large tape machines.
"Chase is an electronic instrumental by Giorgio Moroder from the Academy Award-winning soundtrack and album Midnight Express (1978), then extended and released as maxi single and made the Hot 100 singles charts in January of 1979.
Although originally branded as disco, the song is considered to be, along with Donna Summer's "I Feel Love", a pioneer of the hi-NRG genre that came to prominence in the early 1980s."
@TrainmasterCurt I typically do not respond, but this time you stand corrected. "In '77, Donna Summer was interviewed about her single "I Feel Love", which was a mostly electronic, relatively high-tempo disco song without a strong funk component. In the interview, she said "this song became a hit because it has a high-energy vibe". Following that interview, the description "high-energy" was increasingly applied to high-tempo disco music..."
@TrainmasterCurt "In the 1980s, the term "high-energy" was stylized as "Hi-NRG". Eurobeat, dance-pop, and freestyle artists like Shannon, Stock Aitken Waterman, Taylor Dayne, Freeez or Michael Sembello were also labeled as "Hi-NRG" when sold in the United States." You're stuck on the nomenclature. I just quoted. I personally spell it high-energy, and most people of the disco era should have caught on.
DOES ANYONE KNOW if there is a way to get that original song at 2:20. It one of my favorite songs from the entire film. It's just so awesome with the disco and the effects of Giorgio's electronic music. DOes anyone sell it? How would you get the original song? There MUST be a way. Lol
@metallicsnakeblood Hello and thank you for the reply! I know that this song is called chase lol and that it's also by Giorgio Moroder. I actually have one of his CD's and although it has "Chase" on it, it isn't the original one that you hear starting from 2:12 :( Other people have been asking the same thing. It's like the most wanted version. I just wish their was a way to get it. Man, I like it so much! ANy help would be nice!
@djtripplla ja, gibt es, allerdings nur als white-label (vinyl-only-release), und die sind längst ausverkauft. ich war damals schnell und hab eine ergattern können :-)
@SplendidoSplendente: Ah, that's why I thought he sounds German. Although the people there - the aborigines ;) - prefer their pretty unique German dialect.
@SplendidoSplendente: I liked their dialect although it was barely understandable for me. I was there as a youth (in Völser Aicha, near Bozen/Bolzano) for consecutive 7 years in my summer holidays.
@SplendidoSplendente: Nope, they weren't speaking ladinisch. I come from the Ruhr Area and it was quite hard to understand them when they spoke their local dialect. I could understand them well when they spoke "Hochdeutsch" which still was miles away from standard German. :) After a while it's easier to follow their chatting, of course.
I only know the Vienna dialect that's seems different from the rest of Austrian dialects. I found it had some similarities to Bairisch but still very different.
@SplendidoSplendente: Oh, Köln is in the Rhineland. I live in Essen, next to Bochum, Gelsenkirchen, Dortmund etc.
The Ruhr Area (Ruhrgebiet) is the former industrial center and best known for the coal mining and the steel production (Krupp). But both areas belong to the federal state Northrhine Westphalia.
By the way, Cologne lies at the Rhine, not the Ruhr. ;)
@SplendidoSplendente dont forget that his mother language is ladin ! Val Gardena power !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D He's from my hometown.. go Giorgio!!!
der soundtrack auf cd/vinyl unterscheidet sich von der, die wirklich für den film verwendet wurde. am meisten merkt man es bei den end credits. die version im film ist besser als die auf dem org. soundtrack.
to be more precise giorgio is a "ladino",from a place called val gardena, alto adige, italy.(in alto adige there are three linguistic groups: italian german and ladino)
Few other theme songs come close to this in terms of packing suspence and movement. The overpowering metalic beats draw the viewer in and captivate them emotionally. Pure genius.
come on already, enough chit chat. roll it. have always loved it. but what really slays me is the love theme from midnight express. i have the download, but i really want to see the video clip. if someone has it, please post it!
You know, the version that was released on CD and iTunes is okay. However, the tempo on those versions is anemic compared to the actual version that's featured here and in the film. Can anyone clue me in on where to go to purchase a version that's closer to this and the film?
Hansjörg alias Giorgio Moroder is Italian but his mother tongue is German. Südtirol (Southern Tirol) was a part of Tirol/Austria until 1919.
GM is the nephew of Luis Trenker, a famous mountaineer, writer, director and actor.
If you like GM you should also listen to Kurt Hauenstein alias SUPERMAX. He had a big hit in '78 called LOVE MACHINE. Listen to the Extended version. The 2nd half of the song is very close to modern club music.
