Phil can play any style he wants to. If you look up Def Leppard 'Wasted' Live 99 performance he shreds the hell out of Steve Clarks riffs and adds his own cool little parts here and there.

yeh because most people just base his talent off his def leppard work.From all the Def Leppard stuff Ive listened to he's never really had any fast shred licks. but that's why i like him, because he bases his solos off the music.He doesn't try to play as fast as he can every solo

Def Leppard is my favorite band and thus Phil Collens is my favorite guitarist, and I completely agree with your views on this subject, metal sucks big sweaty donkey balls and the fact that pretty much all metalheads go around making fun of all other kidns of music doesn't help their case too much.

Phil doesn't get enough attention as he should, to me he is definitely up there with Vai & Satch. People don't see how amazing he is because he's not "Shredding" on every song. But to me that shows he's not full of himself and has great musicianship.

@EricMaldonadoMusic I am a HUGE Def Leppard fan. HUGE!!!! But that is ridiculous. Phil has no where near the technique or knowledge of Vai or Satch. Not even close. He is ,among 80's genre guitarists, average at best. I honestly think Steve was a better "complete" guitarist. He wasn't as technical as Phil (although he was fairly technical and classically trained at a young age as well) but his phrasing was much better and had much more presence about him. He was also better at improving.

I am a big Phil Collen fan and think he is a good player as well but I have been playing guitar for 20 sum years know and can tell you in all honesty he a lacks a type of "fluidness" in his playing that all great players have. This is extremely evident when you see his improv work on many vids....

.....Steve wrote the more "creative riffs" according to the producers they worked with and he also seemed to have more awareness of his instrument ie his fluid playing style but don't get me wrong Phil is a very good player who is overlooked to a degree. It is just apparent the lack of musicianship in the band ever since Steve's passing on. From a guitar players point of view, Hie and Dry and Pyro were there best albums by far!

Steve was also rich and famous and while I said Phil is good and a HUGE fan of his, I said that Steve was better. I guess in your unique way thinking this shows jealousy and frustration towards him as well right? I feel as if I am debating a 12 yr old girl.

Well now, hold on a second. There is a specific technique that is used to detemine "fastest". Is Malmsteen fast with his sweep picking? Sure. But the record is based around ALTERNATE picking. And Phil is AMAZING at that. Not two-hand tapping, not sweep picking, ALTERNATE picking.
