Dawson was the biggest horses ass. At the time, he and Rayburn were considered the stars of the show but Dawson's playboy persona has not aged well, and I think Brett's and Charles' immense contributions have come to be more appreciated over time
I watched this show and family feud when I was younger and I never found Richard to be self-righteous at all. I don't think he lost his cool or his temper here. He was more mad at himself than he was at the judges. I have always found the man to be a complete gentleman and personally I find calling him self-righteous and having a 'melt-down' completely wrong and I think you owe him an apology.
I dont have a link now but ive witnessed more than once him kissing young girls who were around 12 to 14 years old. In no world or time is that right and especially on the lips. People seem to have a blind spot where he was concerned and it disgusts me. Im going to try and get a lonk for you to see him in action. I know most here will say 'oh he is a lovely man he is just being friendly'.....ugh.
To be honest, I think that Richards actions were completely genuine, but perhaps misconstrued. There was a lot of stuff said about how Richard was constantly picked for the head to head match, and thats why they invented the Star Wheel. But I think one of the reasons people constantly picked him was that he would actually try to match the contestant. He cared about whether the contestant won or not, and that is why he's so upset. He lost her an easy point.
@Billtheawesome Thats wrong,Ive seen him many times make a so called funny answer which has no chance of matching the contestant. He just had by far the biggest ego.
@bluestriker4444 Ya, during the regular matching round. But during the head-to-head round, where it actually mattered and money was on the line, I've never seen him be anything but serious
@Billtheawesome Just the other day during the matching round a young lady needed the last 2 celebs to match to tie the other contestant and he gave a goofy unmatchable answer so sometimes hs did do when it mattered. There are so many things about the guy I didnt like I could go on forever.
All people have good moments and bad ones. I know Gene Rayburn resented Richard Dawson as a show stealer. But if you watch Dawson's unaired farewell speech from Family Feud, you can tell he's a pretty decent guy deep down.
@jkat2000 Its not right for a man in his 40s to kiss 12 year old girls who he doesnt even know on the lips. If you think thats ok then you are the a@#hole here.
@bluestriker4444 perhaps i am - can you supply a link to such content so that i can judge for myself - those are rather strong accusations that you made against dawson - i've never read anything prior to this that suggests he's a pedophile
I laughed so hard at this. There is no way Richard was being serious here; he goofed up, he joked about it, and the judge was awesome for once and actually played along with it. That was hilarious. This should rank up there with the September incident as far as hilarity goes (even if for totally different reasons).
I love when Richard gets SO pissy when the contestant doesn't take his suggestion for the Super Match, and if it turns out that would have done better with his answer, he's all "why did you do that" and giving them "told you so' looks!
Richard Dawson was totally burnt out from doing Family Fued during the week and taping Match Game every Saturday and Sunday...wasn't this the year he quit? That was a shame...he was so funny--I loved the banter between Bret, Charles, Richard, and Fannie the best. So funny!
I hate Richard Dawson but I still have a hard time watching Match Game where he isn't, because the regulars were the integral part of the show. They were Match Game.
he wasn't being self righteous, he was punch drunk...what he did, and was trying to explain, was no different than when, on Password, they accidentally gave the actual word instead of a clue
@shawnkquinn Its the same studio 33 that TPIR is and was taped in, same studio equipment, same everything, I think they should have given him the CLIFFHANGERS over - the - edge crashing sound
I was way to young at that time this show was on, however in re-runs on the game show network I just love richard in this show, he is so sexy, it's odd how they used to smoke on this show. When he left the show I stopped recording them because with out him the show wasent the same and I only watched it for richard. I think he brett and charles nelson riley were the game show, I love the banter between those three, and the way they handled the gay issue loved it
@trashyourplace Same here. I was just a tike when it originally aired, I actually thought it was bad because it wasn't "fair" - questions could be easy (having one great response) or hard & tricky, evoking a variety of response. Once Richard started doing Family Feud and they redesigned the set, calling it simply The Match Game, the magic never quite came back.
@yaggy9 Yeah Im 18 and I love Match Game reruns! For me Match Game is Gene Reyburn, Charles Nelson Reilly, Brett Somers, and Richard Dawson! Any episode without any of them just isnt Match Game for me! I feel like cringing when I see someone else in Richard's spot!
Dawson wasn't being "self-righteous". He was just ticked off at himself for doing such a dumb-ass thing, and felt a bit guilty about depriving the contestant of a point. In any case, he never went beyond the bounds of acceptable Match Game behavior. He was part of the Match Game "family" and he knew how far he could push the envelope.
@MagicMaureen46 You're right, sorry about that. I meant to use a different word, but I was up all last night doing a telethon and just wasn't thinking straight..
You must be from the Citizens' Committee to Clean Up the Internet. I wish you luck. You've got a daunting task ahead. ;-)
Richard DID usually care about the contestant and their best interest, on both MG and Feud. He'd fight the judge to match something in the maingame if it was close. He'd fight to get a family back on Feud if he felt they were wronged during the maingame.
@zachhoran I agree - even though Richard was pissy on "Match Game" before he left, he ALWAYS had the contestants first and foremost in his mind, regardless of the situation!
Richard might have been an attention hog here but he certainly wasn't being self righteous. I don't think he really expected the judge to give him the point but he was making a joke out of his mistake (and I think the judge was playing along with all the buzzes.) I remember later on he made a joke about this again during the audience match.

for actually taking the time to participate in a legitimate debate where the phrase dumb-ass is
probably the best way to describe it. i think that post was skillfully worded.
it's strange that some people will equate saying dumb-ass to murder. i just say pull the tooth-pick out
