Sorry if this was already answered, but will i be able to put my old 5th generation 60gb hard drive into a 5.5 generation 30 gb ipod logic board? my ipod 5th 60 gb died but im sure the harddrive is still working and i got the 5.5 30gb on craigslist
@Catthompsonmusic It depends on whether it's a 5th gen or 5.5G. You can determine this from the serial number or model number. You may also need to replace the back cover if you are upgrading the drive due to thickness.
Thanks for your help on this video. My IPOD showed the unhappy face and was able to just re-install my original hard drive and it works bitchen. Thanks again :)
thanks man i just put a 30gb drive in my ancient 60gb brick. (i know its a downgrade but my drivers on the 30gb were bad) for those of you attempting this, a guitar pick works really good for gettin the case open, but if u have an 80gb its impossible. already tried.
@aLmahhs If you have a 5.5G board this may be possible. You can determine the model online using your serial number of the model number which starts with an A followed by 4 numbers.
@outlawspark11 Only if it's a 5.5G board. This would also require replacing the back cover (due to thickness), and all components associated with the rear housing... battery and headphone jack.
Just a question, would I be able to put a higher sized HD in a lower sized ipod? I currently have a 30 gig and I want to up it to a 60gig. Would the power supply be able to handle a 60?
I just replaced a hard drive on mine, And when I went to plug it in to charge it up, the apple logo came up and I still got the sad face like in your video. The hard drive is brand new, and I'm now at a loss.
I have recently replaced my ipod video Hard drive with another one with the same specs: Toshiba MK3008GAL 30GB. The problem is that when i connect my ipod to my computer the hard drive doesn't start spinning, it shows the apple logo and then a sad face ipod. and it isn't recognized by my computer!! Help!
@eperezf1 Could be a bad hard drive, bad hard drive cable, improper connection after repair, or a bad logic board. It's really hard to say exactly. We do offer a free diagnostic service if you're interested.
Honestly i did this took out my hard drive and everything then put it back in after 15 minutes and still didnt work. Re-opened it took it out and cleaned the hard drive with alcohol put it back in after 15 minutes still did not work. Like what do i do. Ive tried the dropping method and that worked but then i didnt plug it into a the computer fast enough and its back to doing the same thing.
@gtkconnectionz Do not purposely drop your iPod. That may only damage it further. The hard drive sounds like it might be bad based on what you said. Have you purchased a replacement?
Hey! I've got an 5th generatation ipod and i have the problem that you mention on the video. I've done all the steps that you do on this video, but when I charged the ipod...it's like i don't do anything. The screen it's black, and i can't see the apple logotype.
@caachilimochilis Did you attempt to replace the hard drive? It's hard to say exactly what's wrong. You can try to reset it by holding the menu and center for about 10 seconds while it's on the charger.
Any advice?? Just fitted in a replacement screen from the cracked one i mentioned earlier.Fitted that in plugged up the ipod to the wall charger black backround apple boot, see the sign colour screen then I get the apple sad face.
Didnt make much sense as eveything was working before the cracked screen.
So I opened it up checked if i conencted the hardrive proper close ipod again plug it up to wall charger does'nt boot all I get now is the battery very low rotation sign.
@MrForlay Sorry about the delay in getting back to you. You will have to reformat the new hard drive. Connect it to iTunes and perform a restore. If this doesn't solve your problem you may have damaged the logic board when performing your repairs.
@MrForlay I would try a wall charger. That will supply enough juice to the iPod to boot up the battery. When the battery gets old the capacity goes down and it can be hard to boot it when the battery is extremely low in charge using your USB cable.
YO boss got a new problem.I change the screen with the part I ordered closed it put the pod all back together.Managed to get it to boot but got the an apple sad face.I assumed I didnt connenct the harddrive correctly so re openend it connected everything back.Plugged it to the wall charger all I got was battery very low & the rotating sign left it on for some time no progress no boot.
Whats going wrong?? Have i not connected the hardrive properly???
Ohh hold up boss I stuck the pod into the wall charger it lit up looks like the screen is definite wrecked as there a vertical line on the screen 3 quarters white, the other side grey.Kind of annoying i dropped it many a times & now this well i guess i know how to fix it now
Hello boss if you can help me many thanks.Basically I keep wrecking this ipod 5th gen of mine.FIrst issue was the audio jack was wrecked it would only play sound through 1 side of the earphones so needed replacing.I didnt like the quote prices so ordered a audio jack for myself to fit.Next day I drop my ipod & the screen goes all white no visuals just sound. So I opened it today to go trhough the steps as i put it back together no longer even turns up what have I done.
I have the same iPod but it is the 80gb it is my favorite iPod and I would hate to get rid of it. but when I plug it into iTunes it says corrupted data and does not right any music onto the iPod could you fix this if I was to send it to you.
(iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted)

Mine has the same prblem... Is the battery still good in this case??

@bencraigful Typically, yes. But it you plan to open up the iPod it's a good idea to replace the battery to extend your battery life!

@GoreChyld You have to close the iPod so the metal frame touches the back housing.
