  • Reminds me of Dan Wheldon's crash for some reason.

  • @Burnout900012 Yeah, I kinda thought the same thing.

  • He was gonna become the next big IndyCar star. He'd cleaned up and got his life back on track. It's too bad, but at least he's recovered 1000Xs farther than what anyone expected.

  • The story on this guy is wild I hope he recovers completely he seems to be recouping rather nicely and there are high hopes he will walk again I would like to see a come back if that is what he wishes to do and for him to make it bigger and better than ever. I also would like to know how the roll cage failed so dramatically I seen crashes just like this but the cage held. To me it looked like it broke at a welding point I'm not pointing fingers I am just saying what it looked like to me.

  • @gitrdonedavid That was a hard hit at a bad angle, I'm not sure any welds would of held up. If you look closer the car hit the wall fairly flat, but the cage top was partially above the top of the wall. Kind of creased it and bent, and yeah some welds probably broke. To bad though huh? Hate to see any of these guys get hurt in any of the race classes. I heard about this one but just seen it tonight, now I wish I hadn't. Speedy Fast recovery Shane!

  • DID U READ THAT IM ELEVEN!!!!!!

  • knows me :) i'm his 'girl' as he calls me:) haha.... but i was sooooo nervous that i cried the night he had the wreck :(

  • he's back in victory lane, unfortunately not as a driver. but as a fan, I'm glad he's better then what he was a year ago

  • My gawd.

  • Was this before he became a coke head?

  • @aaaaa0000000000 shut up

  • @llane64 I don't think my question was out of line, so I asked it and got my answer. I have very little tolerance for guys that have it all and piss it away on drugs! What a wasted (no pun intended) talent!

  • @aaaaa0000000000 uhh, i'm only 11 haha, so have no idea what you just said, but i know now, he's not a coke head, and he never has been. he was really nice, and smart. and trust me, he's a lot better than you'll ever be, and guess what?? he's in a freakin wheel chair!

  • @llane64 Don't comment on what you know nothing about!

  • @aaaaa0000000000 uhh, r u saying that i know nothing bout shane? let me count how many times i've seen and talked to him, about....................... WAY MORE TIMES THAN U!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @llane64 But you didn't know he was banned from Nascar for life because he is a drug addict who failed mantatory testing on three different occasions!?! Yep, your a wealth of knowledge!

  • @llane64 no one gives a fuck about u being 11 shut up

  • @grandtheftautowwe shut doesnt go up, smart one.

  • @aaaaa0000000000 I won't disagree with you, or argue, but I think you should watch the Nascar Race Hub episode they did on him. There are clips of it on you tube. It changed my perspective of him. I'm not condoning what he did while he was in Nascar. But for all he has lost and or thrown away, he may have gained more that that back.

  • @vrininger Thanks, when I get a chance I'll check it out!

  • thank god he's alive

  • @Big1Bassman i agree! those guys risk their lives just as much as someone like tony stewart or someone like Joey Saldana, all types of racing has a big risk in it and no one knows wen they mite get in an ugly crash like that

  • he did not look good on race hub

  • He's on NASCAR Race-Hub tonite.

  • @RyanTheIncredible882 you make me sick who cares where he could be and what he was doing thats a human being with a family so what if he had a problem nobody deserves this othan than you for being a small minded fuck

  • Man, that was terrible!!! Did he make it? You it's a hard lick when the roll cage collapses like that.

  • @bcbbcb1 Hes alive, but paralyzed for now.

  • @hoosierredneck1 they say how long he will be paralzed for

  • @goreds03 Well from what Ive heard he is still in physical therapy, trying to regain movement.

  • at Terre Haute racing that sprint car than being in a stock car somewhere with pussies like jimmy johnson and kyle bush.

  • @xxRACINGAMERICAxx I'd hardly call stock car racers "pussies." All forms of racing take a great deal of skill.

  • @RyanTheIncredible882

Although your right about drugs definitly not helping his racing career, racing dirt is what he loved. Sure he couldve had a good nascar career but its not like this was a dead end because he got kicked out of nascar and nobody else wanted him, he wanted to race sprint cars and he wanted to be there. My uncle is a good friend of his and ive met him also and he would always talk about how he loved the gritiness and danger of sprint car racing. Trust me he was much happier

  • I'm not trolling. This is what drugs does to you, if you think about it. He was on his way to having a great career in NASCAR, but he got booted for using illegal drugs. If it hadn't been for using drugs, he wouldn't have been driving here, where he'd gotten injured. He'd probably be competing for a NASCAR championship, poor guy.

  • @RyanTheIncredible882 I would rather race a sprint car/midget/silver crown car than a stock car anyday.

  • everybody ragged on him for so long about his flip off and drug use. Then he crashes hard and everybody loves him. lol funny how things change, great to see him ok.

  • Our prayers are with you Shane. Hope you make it through. That was one hell of a hit man.

  • They said he hit a (rut) that the previous qualifiers had created from running up top. Glad he mad it out but im pretty sure him and racing is kinda slowin down

  • Halo Bar failed. Amazing that he's still alive. Pretty sickening that people "like" this video. And the announcer sounds like the one off of Days of Thunder

  • I think it might've been better for him if it HAD flipped a few times vs. that sudden thud top-first into the wall...the whole dissipating energy thing. Amazing it didn't kill him.

  • He was lucky that car didn't go over the wall.

  • That was strange...usually on that sort of surface that car would have pitched over but it just didn't for whatever reason.

  • It is simply unbelievable that he is still alive. Hes a hell of a driver and I hope he makes a full recovery.

  • Shane is doing much better now, although he may never walk again. For all you haters He ia a really nice guy,who has learned from his mistakes

  • i wonder if he will ever be able to race agian

  • who would like this.he could of died.i know i dont like shane but what if that was u and u saw that 58 liked to c u injured.

  • i like the monster trucks they got when the fair goes on

  • i like shane or at least what i saw of his driving style, looked like there was more grip in the track than he thought, went in a little to hot and stuck, get well soon bro

  • AWESOME.

  • @WrathMania how is that awesome you fucking idiot that wreck could have killed him

  • @mal68ibu2 that's what I'm saying, some dude said it was karma, I was stating that he is on drugs himself if he thinks that what karma is about

  • He had broken neck and broken back in that one if i remember right...

  • Karma? He had a little pot issue so now he is paralized? Maybe you should lay off the smack for a while...

  • @proff29

Thats kinda rough. Nobody ever died from smokin pot. People can make the same bad decisions drinkin as they can smokin. I don't think "karma" would apply here bro.

  • @proff29 I agree with you completely on what you're saying, but he didnt have a "little pot issue". He smoked with regularity, and also was a regular cocaine user. He also tested positive for heroin in one of his drug tests but he denies that.

Regardless of his drug habits lackthereof (he's been clean for a while now) he did not deserve this. Nobody does. To say it was "karma" like that other guy did is just messed up.

  • shanes currently recovering, hes still mostly paralyzed.

  • this is where karma caught up to him.

  • he regained use of his limbs it was reported on ESPN today...he is excpected to make a recovery....wow what a scary crash.....

  • Its kind of sad. If he had never abused drugs during his time in NASCAR he might have made a decent career for himself and not been paralyzed...

  • @TripleHomicide *facepalm* There is always one retard who wants to blame all the worlds problems on drugs.

  • Shane, a HUGE get well goes out to you buddy! You can and WILL overcome this spinal cord injury. I know in my heart that being the man you are you will come out of this even stronger than you were before!

  • @3338MAN You are a piece of shit you know that? That isnt funny one bit, that is fucking disrespect! GET A LIFE!

  • they shoulda never put up those concrete walls stupid! he woulda cleared the old guardrail

  • does anyone know how shanes doing right now

  • @27wJoe His mom put up a facebook page called "Shane Hmiel Road to Recovery" she updates about every day on how Shane is doing.

  • My mistake ppl

  • The wall is concrete... THATS what messed him up...

  • Aaron Fike is the one who shot up heroin and got caught in a parking lot with a crew member and also confessed he did it before races. As for Shane he couldnt quit smoking weed, that was his problem. I really liked Shane as a driver and think he was a wasted talent when it came to Nascar. Sucks we'll never be able to see his full potential.. Get well soon Shane

  • Remember Shane Hmiel's Father asked him what went wrong here. His response..."I tried going wide open."

  • actually he used herion and did a truck race look it up

  • @BBDsk8 That was Aaron Fike that did that

  • @BBDsk8 the one that shot up heroin was aaron fike....i used to live with his brother AJ Fike...It was a shame when shane was banned from nascar and also when aaron was too... if it wasnt for his stupid lil gf shooting up with him i believe aaron could have been a great racer and if shane was still racing nascar he wouldve been the next big thing... he sure can wheel a car around the track...GET WELL SHANE....

  • my 2 uncles ran out to help!

  • Somebody may have already brought this to attention, but it appeared the only half of the top of the chassis appeared to hit the concrete part of the wall. That might've caused the chassis to collapse the way it did; the whole force was applied on only a part of the frame. Hopefully Shane can recover as best as possible and get back to the track.

  • damn that was a hard hit

  • Shane is in good hands at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. You will see him racing again sometime next year with the same fire on the track.

  • @Thepolarcat Shane just started to be able to move the fingers on his right hand today. He won't be recovered in time to race anything this year or next year.

  • Isn't he suspended from NASCAR for life?

  • @LastMartinFanLeft yep. he tested positive for marijuana multiple times. There were plans for him to run the 2011 season in Indy Lights, this wreck unfortunately appears to be changing that. I wish him a speedy and successful recovery.

  • @kemorc he was banned for life from nascar for shooting up heroin before racing

nascar wouldnt have been so severe if it was just a little pot here and there

  • @fatriani you've got to be kidding me right........there is now fukn way any racecar driver could possible shoot heroin and then jump in a racecar, even if they really wanted too....you obviousely have no idea about how it affects the system? or how he could not possibly hide the symptoms from the people around him?? you must be giving into malicious rumours......

  • @brocksteddy87

theres a reason he was banned from nascar for life, and it wasnt for a little pot

  • @fatriani there was other reasons but thats not important right now we just need to keep praying for shane....

  • @fatriani they fouund oppium in his system during a random drugtest, he was suspended indefinetly, a month later in an interview he admitted he was using heroin,

  • Man the first thing I thought when I saw this was Greg Moore's crash.....that is just violent.....hopefully Shane makes a full recovery, on his get well facebook page it says his last surgery should be tommorrow, best wishes for him

  • This is the first time I had seen his wreck and all I can is Wow!! His family has been updating fans on his condition on Facebook. It sounds like he is doing good and that he's going to be alright. Scary though.

  • very unusual crash. his head took full impact, and it's miraculous that he's still alive.

  • Comment removed

  • First Rutz now Hmiel Usac needs to make the chassis's safer over the drivers head

  • I was at the track that night of his crash..I've seen hundreds of Sprint Car wrecks, but this is by far the worst I've ever seen..hopefully they will make the roll cages much stronger now..but were all prayin' for ya Shane..u have so many people behind you during this..stay strong man!

  • I race on dirt myself and I agree that many of these tracks need to upgrade their facilities. It is just hard for them to do because they are all on such a tight budget. The only thing drivers can really do is get the best safety equipment possible for their own cars.

  • Maby instead of thinking of the car to be safer try to make the track safer. Maby a safer barier type walls like nascar has would help absorbe impacts like this along with some more car engineering.

  • @racer10mark The track at Terre Haute is like a lot of them - short on funds to do any major upgrades. The old double strand Armco rail that used to be there was a lot lower. That sort of flight would have ended up in cheese shredder fencing and possibly out into the pit area. In a way, that would have been preferrable to the hard impact that took all the kinetic energy in one hit. It pretty much leaves the car safety as the only thing drivers and crew have control of.

  • @RobZip22 I know that I have been racing my whole life and race a midget at tracks just like this and I know chassis builders have been always developing new safety stuff and I know i have every safety device that I can see for impact accidents from ancle, knee braces. Full caontaiment seat etc. but the tradittional concrete walled racetrack has been that way for years. There has to be room for improvent that we could work towards.

  • that is a freak accident..those cars very very rarely hit like that..I'm just glad to see him alive and alert..I've seen numerous Sprint Car wrecks, but Shane, had an angel on his shoulder that day..keep him and his family in ur prayers and thoughts and let's see him pull through this!!

  • did he make it out ok?

  • I hope shane makes a full recovery.

But i sure hope usac looks into this to possibly make thicker stronger rollcages

  • You are in my prayers Shane, I hope you make a speedy recovery and would love to see you in a NASCAR again but first and foremost...GET WELL SOON!

  • @DaedalusZero - That was a seriously hard crash though. I know he hit right on the top of the roll cage, but that buckled too easily, in my opinProxy-Connection: keep-alive

    Cache-

  • What a terrible wreck. Reminds me of Greg Moore at Fontana, going top first into concrete like that. I hope his recovery is successful, for him and his family. It's a tough business, racing, and still so dangerous. I remember a time when. My heroes disappeared at an appalling rate. So much has changed so much, I can't believe crashes this bad are taking away young talent like this in the modern age.

  • i cant believe there are people that low enough to comment on how redneck somone is after they juuuuuuuust about lost their life! and the redneck thing.....what the hell is redneck about racing??????

  • Thank god he is alive=)

  • @7asprinter hes paralyzed after a short coma he had, but hes doing better.

  • anything happend to him?

  • wow.. i knew it wasnt good once i saw BOTH left side tires raise..

  • @r503av92h34 ignorance breeds ignorance. im sure you could afford one of these cars, right? im sure youve been to a race too, right?

  • Wow, that was an ugly accident.I hope he makes a full recovery my prayers and best wishes to him and his family.

  • @Obsidean same here...

  • I ran Sprints for years, short of a solid block as a roll cage that was the weakest part in that type of hit on the cage, flat on the wall at 135 mph. I saw Toby Tobias get killed when his car landed upside down on the wall at Flemington many years ago.

People say crap because they don't know and really don't have the manhood to sit in a car like this. Lets Pray Shane will survive.

  • @r503av92h34 YOU STUPID PICE OF SHIT A MAN ALMOST LOST HIS LIFE AND ALL YOU CAN DO IS BE A FUCKIN RETARD JUST BECAUSE YOU THINK IT IS SHIT THAT ONLY REDNECKS DO JUST SHOWS HOW FUCKIN STUPID YOU ARE

RACING IS HARD ON SO MANY LEVELS AND RACING ON DIRT IS VERRY HARD. ID LIKE TO SEE YOU TRY TO CONTROL A CAR AT 120MPH ON DIRT YOU WOULNDT LAST 1 SEC JUST BECAUSE YOUR FUCKIN STUPID DONT JUDGE OTHERS AND JUST REMBER THE SAME THING COULD HAPPEN TO YOU. AND TO SHANES FAMILY YOU ARE IN MY PRYERS.

  • yeah to many people trying to save weight by using lighter/thinner parts. low bar sprintcars should be banned and containment seats should be made mandatory in sprints and midgets

  • @myrx2 AGAIN!.. First it was a Silver Crown car, not a Sprint car, and USAC mandates many safety features including the size and type of metal used for the chassis and the cage. That particular type of car is known as a champ dirt car, and is the biggest and heaviest of the 3 open wheel divisions that USAC runs. It has a 96inch wheel base and must weigh 1700 lbs without the drive, and you must use 4130 chromoly tubular steel for the cage.

  • @grouper10 First thing, that sort of direct pancake hit with the full weight of the car at speed against the top of the cage is way beyond what these cars normally endure. Still, looking at the length of the side bars and the amount of open span, I wonder if maybe a few extra bars need to be added somewhere..

  • Comment removed

  • @RobZip22 I never said different Rob...I saw Shane earlier this year at the Copper on Dirt at USA speedway in AZ. It was his first time out on the dirt in a Silver Crown car, but by the end of the A main, he was getting around the place pretty good..Thoughts and prayers.

  • @grouper10 That's cool. There's no doubt the car was up to spec and built according to the best knowledge available. Its just that incidents like these have always made everyone - drivers, car owners, sanctioning bodies, chassis builders - question whether the envelope has been exceeded and maybe it's time to look at doing more for safety. Of course we just can't start plopping extra bars in there without good engineering either.

  • @RobZip22 The fact is a 1/2 mile track like Terre Haute is considered to small for a "big car", and they only ran for years, and mostly still do, one a one mile track . This was a very unusual deal, but the truth is, "anything that can happen, will" as far as racing is concerned. If you look back over the history of the Silver Crown cars for the last 30 years or so, you'll find they have been much safer than both the Midgets, and Sprinters.

  • @grouper10 Agreed on track size. These cars do belong on the 1 mile tracks. Comparing Silver Crown stats with the sprintrs and midgets, you have to also consider far fewer dates the big cars run, the smaller engines(wasn't always true), and the longer wheelbase making the Crowns a bit less twitchy.

Another car being run away from its environment is the USAC midget at Eldora. Freaky fast and very light on its wheels. You saw Shane's outcome in a midget at the 4 Crown this year??

  • @grouper10 And I also have no doubt that a midget or sprint launching into the wall cage first would probably have had the same result for the driver. It was a very rare, very extreme hit.

  • Crappy roll cage.

  • @04ray25number2 no, not many would stand up to tht

  • i heard he broke his back and neck in two places in both!

  • D'ohhh! ...D'OHHH!!!

  • thats what happens with a paper rollcage .... tubes should be 6times wider in diameter :/

  • The rollcage was compromised as a result from the roof contact! Shane has severe breaks to his neck and back and needs all the prayers he can get!!! Thanks to all who commented positively!!!

  • whta hapend to him

  • he hit pretty fucking hard

  • damn what a bad wreck.

  • Wow,I dont know how he wasn't killed instantly, the roof went frickin flat! Hope he gets better soon.

  • now see what happened was his car hit them ruts down in 3 and he hit em just right to make his car go over slow enough to just be right at the roof when it hit the wall. Damn he's lucky if he lives.... You know, Keselowski took a hit like that at Atlanta, but he had a roll cage, eh these cars don't have that....

  • @firestarsfan These cars do have a roll cage, this was just that hard of a hit.

  • Shane was in a Champ Dirt car ( not a Sprint car) running in the Silver Crown series where he's currently 5th in points. The Silver Crown car is the biggest and heaviest in the USAC open wheel divisions. Go to RW motorsports.

  • thats the hardest hit ive ever seen i hope shane and his family a speedy recovery

  • not sure it would have been his neck brace because most of the sprint car series mandate that drivers have to wear a head and neck restraite im sure shane was wearing a honz device> To those who are saying hes a drug addict well im sure you have tried them a time or to you mix young and money and girls and parting what do u get most of the time just because he failed a test for nascar doesnt mean hes a bad guy look at your f ing baseball players or any sport for that matter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Shane Hmiel - Road to Recovery Update from Shane's mom Lisa -shane update. just

go call from operating room. things going very well but no time limit.

ok friends means no time limit on prayers. keep in going. rally with us

  • Shane's still in bad shape. seems to be paralyzed from waste down they did a major back surgery today in hopes it may help. he does seem that he is gonna make through this just not sure of his paralysis. info from his mom Lisa

  • @Drifter982

Want to wish Shane a speedy recovery and my prayers go out to the family. He was trying so hard to do what he loved. Hope for a full recovery. Thanks.

  • Looks like hes neck brace flew off.

  • @SteveRosswick

It appears to be the air cleaner

  • Did I hear Homer Simpson yelling when

    the crash happened? D'ohh!! ...D'OHHH!!!

  • @utubefIager1 not funny motha fucker. hope a piano falls on your head for that comment then ill be there sayin D'OHHH! and laughing at your ass cause karma's a bitch

  • get well shane

  • What is the large black object that flies through the air and lands presumably on Shane's head? It's not a tire off the car, not the steering wheel and not the mud cover. Anyone?

  • @SteveRosswick I am guessing the flying black object is something from inside the car from its projection. Maybe the top of his seat?

  • ouch

  • WOW

  • RW Motorsports, Shane's team.. 10:30am

On behalf of RW and Shane’s family we thank you for your continued prayers and support. Yesterday afternoon, Shane underwent surgery to address the breaks in his neck. He fared well through the surgery and remains stable. He is now awaiting a second procedure intended to address the fractures in his back. We ask that you continue your prayers for Shane and his family and we will provide you with updates as we learn more throughout the coming days.

  • Just saw this for the first time. Thank God it wasn't worse. Praying for a complete recovery.

  • This was an unusual crash and different barriers wouldn't have helped much as most dont have the resillance to absorb enough of the force to be helpful

  • First of all I am a member of the THAT Fire and Rescue Crew and one of the first people on sceane. I would like to send the prayers and best wishes of the entire crew to Shane and his family.

  • Wow what a hard lick.Hope he gets back into better health.

  • wow that's a hard lick, good to here he's recovering. I think from this maybe safer walls and stronger roll cage?

  • I know he survived but what injuries did he have?

  • @Curtisjaxn1 Broken neck in two places (operated on yesterday), a broken back (being operated on now), and probably quite a few other injuries they haven't disclosed.

  • even though its hard and rough to watch, thanks for postin. get well shane. our thoughts go out to you and your whole family.

  • That is one of the worst crashes I've seen on dirt. I hope he recovers.

  • I was there. In my section, people thought he had been decapitated. We were sick to our stomachs over it until we could eventually tell he was injured. There were some tears shed. Horrible crash. I do not wnat to ever feel that way at a race track again. We thought for sure he was dead. So fortunate to be alive and may the healing process be a speedy and good one! Thoughts and prayers to Shane and all involved.

  • That is a bad deal. Our prayers are with Shane.

  • that looked bad i hope he is okay

  • @evanizle13 he broke his back and neck. But is expected to recover.

  • Wow! That was a hard hit in the head, I hope all goes well for Shane Hmiel. Good news that he's recovering!

  • Shane is a great person. I hope that his recovery is 100%. Talent like his is hard to come by.

  • Man. I saw Hmeil running on NASCAR races some years back and wondered where he went off to. Shocking to see how easily the roll cage on that thing collapsed when it hit that barrier. Glad he's got a chance to survive, but you'd think they'd make these things just a bit heavier to withstand impacts like that...

  • @YusakuJon3 its racing man. it happens and I bet shane will say the same thing one day.

  • @YusakuJon3hewasondrug ral ad nasacr terew hi ou hoehesstill not usin

  • @YusakuJon3 drugs took him over nascar threw him out

  • man that makes me feel sick,he's a lucky boy to even survive a hit like that.

  • feel the same way

  • Get well soon Shane!

  • wow...
