Originally the story of aladdin is a middle eastern folk tale and it's one of the tales in the book "one thousand and one nights", wich by the way dates back to the 12th century...

the real aladdin in the book arabian nights was not arabian he was indian or chinese i forget but he was not arabian disney just took alot of bits and pieces from the entire book arabian nights to create their version of aladdin

(but since there is allot of arabian influence in indie i'm inclined to think it was from arabia first. but just because im think that now does not mean i'm not willing to hear the other side of the story.

Just keep in mind, Aladdin has been around much longer than Disney...and there have been SEVERAL adaptations. Disney just happened to be the most famous adaptation. I remember growing up watching the MEL-O-TOONS cartoon Aladdin...and that was -WAY- before Disney ever got ahold of it.
