  • my neighbor and i built a 38' by 46' rink in his yard this year, we live in New Jersey... we basically did what is shown in the video, unfortunately, my neighbor's yard has somewhat of a tilt to it so the deepest part is like 7'' and the shallowest is 2'', it took about 2 days of being around 30-36 degrees F during the day and 15-30 degrees F at night to freeze 2 to 3 inches which was about 1/3rd of the rink, after about 5 days, 3/4ths of the rink is done and and now after about 8 days its done

  • truly a work of art!

  • were did you get your tarp from and how much is it?

  • great thank you

  • This is awesome!!!!

  • HOCKEY FTW! :D

  • What kind of tarp is that? Im building my first rink this year and going off of your vid. My yard isnt as big as yours but Nice job. I hope that im successful lol and at what temp should I start?

  • Comment removed

  • To all you people who say it will kill the grass... you must live in southern climates because you dont know what your talking about. Its winter, the grass wont get damaged as long as the tarp is removed by spring. Think about it, all winter your lawn could be covered by two feet of snow yet it still looks fine in the summer.

  • @BabyRiley2006 Good points, but how fast will the ice melt? My concern would be that it takes too long to melt and goes too far into the spring before you can pull the tarp up. And I would think a black tarp would be more harmful than one that would be white or trasparent (to allow some light to pass through).

  • @TheWitchOvAgnesi The ice will Melt quite fast when the temperature gets above freezing, especially since he used a black tarp. I dont know why he used black since white makes it easier to make ice because it doesnt attract the heat from the suns rays like black does. In Canada the ice will melt by mid March at the latest, but frost lasts til May...thats when we start planting our lawn seeds and flowers, ect.

  • @BabyRiley2006 Good point about teh black tarp. I wasn't even thinking about that.

Though I guess it would help with the removal process in the spring especially if one lives in an artic climate. :-)

  • @TheWitchOvAgnesi Definitely

  • nice rink. just a question though...in the spring when the ice melts away how does the grass turn out? Is it destroyed?

  • @Brian66D I'm making one this winter and all the sights i have read said put the tarp on like when the grass dies for the winter like i guess when the grass starts to get frost and most sights say in the spring there grass turns green actually but everywhere i read they say it doesn't hurt the grass

  • @SkatingIsMyWayOfLife You place the tarp down after the ground has frozen so that the heat from the ground doesnt keep melting your ice rink. What you read is correct, it doesnt hurt the grass at all.

  • sweet rink . Now it just needs to get really cold here !! :P we live in south texas no chance of a outdoor ice rink :( Yours is sweet tho

  • NAME OF MUSIC?

  • @netofuliaro clocks, coldplay

  • Cool video man..whe did you buy the tarp?

  • Liner should i say?/

  • cool video man!!!!

  • Lawn 3 months of hard work, Ice rink 3.45 minutes, watching a guy destroy his lawn with an ice rink- PRICELESS.

  • @reptile411 funny you think that cause come spring time the liner causes a greenhouse effect under it and it becomes the healthiest part of the lawn, dont just assume something if you dont no what your talking about....u must be the old bag that tells the kids to get off the lawn loser.

  • @18wheeler76 I fixed your grammar and spelling errors. Don't get so mad at a harmless public comment. I think a loser is a person who resorts to name calling because they are hurt from a harmless comment. Good day.

  • @reptile411 fixed my grammer what a waste of your time,im typing not talkin retard, like i said u obviously dont no shit about the lawn getting ruined since u live on wellfare and have no yard to build a rink let alon ruin your grass ass.

  • @18wheeler76 HAHAHA that's to funny. Please before you reply again spell everything properly. I cant believe you just called me a retard when you are the one that has yet to complete first grade.

  • Cool, but - no friends?

  • @keepthefunk who cares about friend lol calm down man

  • @keepthefunk fuck that i'd spend all week making a rink like that then invite myf riends over every day to play hockey.

  • @keepthefunk

Are you serious?????? Because he actually went and did shit other than sitting inside on his ass staring at Call of Duty you're saying he has no friends? Wow. It's pretty sick that he built this when most kids his age are too busy staring at facebook to actually do something constructive.

  • Very well done! A great video to watch beginning to end. What an impressive project taking full advantage of a great backyard space and your climate! Bravo!

  • would not be happy if my neighbour was running that saw late at night.

  • It's winter and likely it wasn't even all that late- probably not even past 7pm. :-)

  • i was thinking that too

  • Looks like a fun project! nice one man!

  • LOL at 1:57 and DAD saying call it quits for the night XD this is jawsum btw, +1 interwebs

  • Great video. I think I'm gonna make one next year.

  • amazing, i had to watch it twice!

  • hahaha nice one! awesome!

  • lol this was totally awesome

  • whattttt your sick at skating and making homemade ice skating rinks?????

  • 3:40 WHOOP BARDOWN !

  • i have a question, what if i want to make one of these, but my yard isn't as leveled as his. how could i make the ice lvled?

  • Comment removed

  • Water will level itself, before it freezes obviously, but you will have to build up one side a little higher, so you can put enough water in for it to be level..this is what he did in the video to the left side of the rink..His yard must go downhill in that direction, so he built it up a little higher to add more water to level things out.. ..The other alternative of course would be to have your yard leveled, but that might be a bit extreme..

  • if you make your rink high enough the ice will be level by itself.

  • Very cool...

  • Nice work :)

Thanks for uploading this video. 5*

  • That's awesome! Great Job Ross!

  • Comment removed

  • thats alot of work, nice job

  • Made my day. This was great. It takes a lot of work. I tried once and the rink was a third this size. Thanks!!!

  • sweet.. longer nicer

  • I love it!

  • Great video and way to work your butt off for some fun! A++++

  • this video is awesome man. There seems to be a lot of trollin' here, but when's the last time any of you ( including myself) did something this constructive ?

  • Cold play is the Sh!t.

  • Great video, excellent rink; thanks for this!

  • What a great video! Thanks for posting!

  • that dog was jammin at 1:13

  • Lucky to have a yard large enough to put this up in, plus the outdoor pool. Nice.

  • did he really need the big sheet? If the ground was frozen he just had to hose the water onto it?!

  • if you didn't use the sheet you would kill your grass.

  • der!

  • you arent smart are you?

  • no imagination..

  • The grass is going to die anyway. His friend is fat.

  • How long did it take I'm thinking of making one?

  • good job. you're a good skater too

  • I will be round with a bag of salt tonight!

  • How thick do you make the ice?

  • cool....

  • good for you man, shit mustve taken forever.

  • great job

  • Very cool to watch, nice job dude!

  • wow

  • great job !

  • Really cool wish I lived in an area I could do this. California doesnt exactly allow for winter skating. Had one as a kid and it was awesome! Nice vid, thx for sharing.

  • thats a big ass tarp

  • @tinytimme I dont think thats a tarp, it looks like rubber rolled roofing which is over $1000 for a piece that size! Expensive backyard project.

  • luv it!

  • lol just in time for winter..

  • could have been a bball court

  • @canttuchdis

Yeah, if he was black! AMIRITE?! LOLOL!

  • cool :D

  • He says he does it every year, so it doesn't really damage the grass...which is the most resilient plant on earth.

  • KOOL...

  • shit is nades

  • That was awesome!

  • haha lol

  • what's that do to the grass underneath, by chance?

  • I used to build a smaller (30' X 44') rink in my back yard until a job change messed up my free time. I lined mine with a green tarp. In the spring when the ice melted, the grass under the rink always started growing before the rest of the yard....Every winter my granddaughter asks me if I am going to make the ice rink again...I should start looking for another job with better hours so I can build it again....Life's too short to work yourself to death!

  • No, it isn't a building violation. It is not a permanent structure (not much different than a tent).

  • You must be a liberal.

  • narc

  • I really despise people like you

  • fair play for effort tho pretty neat idea

  • He must be the most popular dad in the neighborhood!!!!!

  • Ohh this song is sooo moving. Heh, I mean super gay.

How about using Pink Floyd's - On Thin Ice?

  • i am sure your neighbors are pissed. The last thing a good neighborhood needs is a fucked up ice rink... Good luck with the lawn underneath.

  • Like it fucking matters? Its hidden in the backyard and its the middle of winter.

  • what do you do in winter masturbate in the basement for 5 months straight?

  • I sure don't waste good money and build a retarded ice rink that will destroy my yard.

  • thats sweet! My neighbors made one too...

  • Awesome!! :D

  • now, how to build a Zamboni?

  • lol...i was wondering about the same thing...

  • so much hard work, i feel inspired :)

  • how did you make sure that the entire surface would be evenly flat?

  • He took the bumps out, after that it ends up flat.

  • @DeRealUno It is water. It will be flat unless theres stuff on it.

  • The bottom doesnt have to be that flat, as long as its thick enough in all places. the water will be flat no matter, before it freezes ( gravity ).

  • naw not really.... the just normal for water due to its high intermolecular forces... which are due to its intramolecular arrangement..... which makes it be flat in anything that is placed on. Think of it as being like skin. This is known as surface tension.( Chem)

  • lol thats gonna DESTROY the lawn underneath hahaha
