Dear Mark. Excellent advice! The key is the length of the backstoke. I use a device that measures how far my ball will roll on a practice green on a given day with a 1 foot backstoke. From that information (assuming the greens are mowed the same as the practice green) I can figure out exactly what the backstroke length should be for any lag putt I might face during my round. It's a very reliable, repeatable system for lag putting. It uses your basic idea.
