WTH!! I've NEVER seen her perform this live; ugh! If only! I had to dig out a 1979 live audio version and make a photo slide show, lol! I'll post it as a video response! She'll be performing at the State Fair of Texas in October; I'm gonna spam her FB page to sing this song in October.
Man i seen this woman back in 79 a rising star concert in seattle the show was only a buck. The local rock station KISW use to put on these rising star concerts for only a dollar. So cool.
@danadanewithfame Listen to the lyrics - it's about a futuristic society where people are cloned instead of reproducing sexually, "No VD, No cancer, on TV's the answer - no father, no mother, she's just like the other...
Pat is number one, I say! She was the best in the business........Totally, smart, sexy and feisty......And the lead guitarist his her husband; lucky woman I say!!
it was too GOOD to be a number one single. (it seems that the best songs never get to number one. the public prefers mediocrity.) also, the term "clone" may have confused people in the early eighties. back then, fewer people were familiar with the term. thus, their reaction would have been,"WHAT is she singing about!?!!"
@jonbecker03 I agree that a lot of the best songs on some artists albums aren't the big "hits", but I think it might not have been chosen as a single because of the venereal disease reference. I was a senior in high school when this came out, and cloning was very well-publicized at that time. Everyone I knew was well aware of what it was and a bit nervous of the potential, hence this song.
Only live version of this that I can find on YouTube, of this, my favorite Pat Benatar song...so thanks for posting! I have seen her three times in the last few years and she NEVER plays this...[sigh]....
@dayna96 sorry to be responding three years later... It was recorded in the summer of 1979... "No naughty clone ladies allowed in the '80's", too funny!
See now, this is a little known fact, but Pat's albums are chock full of "weird" songs. Think of it as "the little progressive chick trapped in a rocker's body". You'd be surprised at how many cool bizarro songs she's recorded.
My mother played and played this album over and over, about 79, I was only 5 and I remember LOVING this song!

Wow, a Benetard song that doesn't suck. It's actually good. Why didn't she do much more like this?

@AnoziraNoscut - Pat and Roger wrote "Hell is for Children" after both read a article in The New York Times about child abuse.
innamorata40 1 year ago
@AnoziraNoscut She co-wrote it with Roger, she doing most of the lyrics and he the music. likewise on "Hell is for Children".

A kick ass guitar player and a kick ass singer. This is what music is all about. It's definitely not lip syncing, dance choreography, mamby jahamby.

Benatar co-wrote this song. One of my favorites, that most folks aren't familiar with. I've seen her in concert six times and she is utterly amazing.

"Clone" is what twins often call each other.
Great to see she's still rocking out. I felt so old when I heard her daughter was a presenter at a music awards show in 2006 (GAAAHG!)

what year was this recorded?
dayna96 4 years ago 2
HI, This was from one of her early albums,
and in my opinion is her very best song. This
live recording looses a bit, but the original
is just brilliant. I used to (back in the early eighties) commute regularly about a
thousand kilometres (about 600 miles) back and
forward when courting, and had a tape made up
of this song repeated over and over for 90 minutes. Just love this song... never tired
of hearing it...

totally agree. I did the same, and this is definatly one of her best.
