F15 can do 1600 Mph with 4 missiles on and after burner on runs out of fuel in 10 - 20 mins So it has to fly much slower for the mission duration.

The Tornado can do 1450 at high altitude with after burner on. At low level it is much faster than the F-15 at low alt and can fly low enough to hide from radar for most of the mission.

To beat the stealth of the tornado you have to remove all the hills from your land, much harder to do than upgrading your radar.

The Tornado is a fantastic aircraft and has evolved to be a worthy part of several Air Forces throughout the world. However it's low level strategies did not live long - after one was shot down during the first Gulf war while at low level.

The RAF then changed tactics and did no further low level bombing runs and still doesn't.

During the same war the best of low level bombers the Buccaneer also carried out medium to high level attacks as well as acting as 'spike' aircraft for the Tornado

@theclivesinclair The Wrong war i would say, Tornado was designed for hitting the soviet bloc and if the cold war went hot medium and high level flying would be suicide. At low level i've no doubt planes would still have been lost but the targets would have been hit. It was one plane the russians really did fear and thats why the americans wanted them in the gulf as they knew Tornados could hit targets regardless of if they could passify the defences

The ADV was a redesigned Tornado to temporary replace the Electric Lighting while the Euro Fighter was being designed. The ADV had enough missile range to kill a Mig-29 before themig could engage it.

Germany is only replacing a few of the Tornados with M.A.L.E. UAV and a few with the Eurofighter, but i am pretty sure that they will keep some of these Planes. They are so typical for the german Luftwaffe or Marine.

@konischev At 2500km/h, the Tornado is quite a bit faster than the Su-34 at 1900 km/h.

@Helge129 actually the Tornado is at 2,400 km/h, which is faster than the SU-34 I guess. But the Su-34 is a better bombber. At mack 1.8 it can carry almost 100k pounds, while the Torando can only Cary 60k

@EarlofCrawford Who under-rates it? The UK, Italy and Germany hold it in high regard and the Americans acknowledge it's supremacy in low-level strike missions, which is why the RAF took the lead in these strikes in both Gulf wars while the Americans limited themselves to higher altitude, strategic strikes or CAS missions.
